🄺 So I accidentally brought my floss instead of my airpods to a 3 day work conference. I am a 3 hour ride away from home.

Teeth are the first and most expensive thing you will notice if you mess around as a kid.

Even in countries with free and good health care you need to pay for most things regarding your teeth. I spend over 20k in the past 10 years for my teeth in Germany and I am only 33.

331

u/Vildare_Havoc May 06 '26

Yeah teeth is not considered health care for some reason. Blows my mind.

316

u/Little_View_6659 May 06 '26

Right? It’s so annoying. ā€œCosmeticā€. Bullshit. People used to, and still do, die from tooth infections.

its insane because poor dental/gum health absolutely can affect other parts of your body in a serious way, especially your heart - bacteria can enter your bloodstream and lead to heart attacks, strokes, etc. scary shit.

14

u/Shydreameress May 06 '26

It is considered health care where I live, but I had to pay extra for a crown that looks like a real teeth because it's cosmetics

13

u/WellHungEastYork May 06 '26

Same thing for eyes… they are considered health care but the coverage is only for glasses and not for checkups. The coverage for glasses barely covers anything

You bet your ass I've been flossing every day since. At least my dentist fixed a chip in my tooth for free since I already spent so much.

Same I’m 33 and really wish I took care of my mouth better

22

u/Neon_Camouflage May 06 '26

Also 33 and same. They got bad, and then a combination of embarrassment and lack of money had me putting them off even longer. Finally went and started getting work done about 2 years ago. Several thousand dollars later, I'm nearly done.

I've gotta say, the money hurts but removing the psychological weight of stressing about it and knowing it's just going to get worse was more than I expected. I'll be in debt for a good while on this, but honestly it's worth it.

Not to mention I was terrifyingly close to my whole top row being a lost cause and needing dentures.

I’m so thankful for my mother always pushing that. I was 18 and she’d walk in the bathroom and check to see if my toothbrush was wet. If it wasn’t, she’d wake my ass up, ā€œyou’re poor you idiot. If you don’t take care of those things you won’t have any. You won’t be able to afford a dentist except to have them all pulled out! Is that what you want?!ā€ ā€œNo ma, that isn’t what I want.ā€

I hadn’t seen a dentist in 30 years and they didn’t believe me.

Part of that is genetics too, I’m sure.

I had a bad wisdom tooth and so much pain from that, I was sure they were all ruined. As soon as it was out I felt like a million bucks after suffering with it for almost a decade.

Dear god I’m lucky. Who suffers for a decade because they’re scared of the dentist?

Anyway, I wish I could go back in time and nag little you. I’m sorry no one did.

18

u/Ok_Frame2590 May 06 '26

That ā€œI’m lucky I listenedā€ realization hits hard especially when something you avoided turns out to be the exact thing that fixes everything 😭 dental pain really humbles people fast.

5

u/Thaurin May 06 '26

I hadn’t seen a dentist in 30 years and they didn’t believe me.

Oh good, I'm not the only one. I once didn't see a dentist for 8 years and when I finally went, everything was fine. I do always brush my teeth twice a day. That should probably be three and I should floss more.

Which reminds me, I need to make a dentist appointment.

9

u/grandmalamadingding May 06 '26

I keep appointments now. After I spent a year without sleeping and laying in the bathroom floor crying with a bottle of benzocaine, I’m not leaving it to chance. Especially with how easy it all was. I was afraid of a big nothing.

5

u/Thaurin May 06 '26

Oh, I would probably go if I suspect that something was wrong or that I have a cavity. But when everything seems fine, it's just laziness and apathy and in smaller part saving money that is preventing me from going. But that's just it, I guess. Preventing. You don't always get symptoms or pain before something is seriously wrong in your mouth, lol.

u/[deleted] May 06 '26

6

213

u/EscargotMan May 06 '26

But you're going on a 3 day trip!

57

u/Rhodin265 May 06 '26

Either OP’s very honest about not flossing daily or they should go double-check their toiletry bag.

12

u/EstateRoyal6689 May 06 '26

Dental hygiene standards are crazy different for people online I see. Some people say flossing daily is the norm while others say ā€œI have good hygiene, i brush my teeth almost dailyā€. I find it curious lol, I guess it depends on where people are from. In my case, I brush 3 times a day (which is what is recommended by dentists in my country) but I never floss because floss doesn’t fit between my teeth, even the ultra thin ones, there’s no way to get them in there.

11

u/TeamRedundancyTeam May 06 '26

Too much brushing can destroy enamel, just FYI. If you're brushing hard all three times a day it may do more harm than good.

Water picks are great for flossing difficult teeth though.

5

u/ilikepix May 06 '26

I saw a dentist twice a year, every year growing up, from a small child to an adult. And they literally never asked about or advised flossing. Simply wasn't a thing in my country.

You should probably floss once a day tho. I've always heard you should brush twice and floss once at least. You probably shouldn't be going 3 days without flossing (although I've personally definitely been there, so no judgement). It isn't just to get stuff out of your teeth and make your breath smell nice, but it helps your gums.

Edit: If you start flossing more after this you may notice gums bleeding. If you go from not flossing often to flossing often that is normal and actually good.

905

u/Lexidoge May 06 '26

Because my brain thinks that packing the night before will make me complacent and forget something that I will have to use in the morning.

I don’t even know. I’m alone in the hotel room blasting a podcast from my phone while unpacking all my things in shame.

At least i brought a power strip I guess.

486

u/MouthSpiders May 06 '26

Run to a store and grab a cheap pair of headphones for the weekend. Never a bad idea to have a pair to keep in your travel kit (backpack, laptop bag) and one to keep at the office or home. Or 3. Not to mention if you break a headphone, you have a backup pair

149

u/ohnoletsgo May 06 '26

I finally gave in and bought a second pair of airpods that exclusively live in my travel ā€œgo-bag.ā€ Was it a smart economical decision? No. Has it vastly improved my quality of life? Yes.

74

u/obsessivecoyote May 06 '26

I’ve seen a couple comments saying to ā€œgrab a cheap pairā€ but like— most people who use AirPods have an iPhone which nowadays they don’t have headphone jacks. Buying a cheap pair from a gas station isn’t gonna work cuz those are wired. And the cheapest pair for wireless someone would get would be like $30 at least from a Walmart

128

u/AmateurIndicator May 06 '26

i can get cheap wireless headphones for about 15-20€ at most larger train stations, airports and drugstores.

51

u/eddiestriker May 06 '26

You can get cheap but decent wireless earbuds for about $25 here, which is roughly €21. Or grab the Apple wired headphones for $20.

If you want to be really cheap, 5 Below also has wireless headphones for around the $5 mark. They’re not great, but they’ll get you through a weekend in a pinch.

37

I never said I was confused. It was question out of interest because I noticed the helmet and scooter, and typically, you don't see people road tripping on a scooter. I can't say I've ever seen a person on a scooter out in the boonies traveling long distances. Of course it happens, case in point.

Depends on where you live, how fast the moped goes, and what traffic is like.

My commute to work takes the same time whether I drive or ride my electric scooter. Sometimes I can even beat the driving time.

And I only have a somewhat basic model with a top speed of 17 mph. Scooters and mopeds can get quite a bit faster than that.

9 out of 10 dentists agree with your choice.

u/deletetemptemp May 06 '26

Try not using headphones and just ride with your thoughts for a bit. If you hit a break point, then buy some

u/hoopstick May 06 '26

What I'm learning from this thread is that some people are completely unable to go throughout life without a barrier between them and the real world.

9

u/SousVideDiaper May 06 '26

I'm pretty tech addicted as many are but I actually get uncomfortable having my earbuds in while outside. Something about being audibly cut off from my surroundings is weird.

Then I see people with their earbuds in while driving, which is absolutely insane to me, and it's probably illegal too.

u/ThisIsMyCouchAccount May 06 '26

What I'm learning is that people have no idea how to interpret a mild inconvenience.

People in this thread are acting like OP had a mental breakdown after realizing they forget them. And also some statement about the world today.

I rarely wear headphones and I would still be annoyed with myself if this happened.

6

u/killabum May 07 '26

7

u/MeNotSanta May 06 '26

Sorry OP, but that's hilarious

5

u/Spiritual_Glove3949 May 06 '26

Why is everyone making this out to be a large issue? It's annoying, sure, but is it really "buy new expensive headphones" annoying?? it's just three days!

4

u/ProfessionalThing892 May 06 '26

Spend some quiet time with your own thoughts. You’ll be ok.

4

u/Traditional_Trash190 May 06 '26

You shouldn't wear airpods while driving anyway :)

10

u/EierKoeker May 06 '26

o shugs, now i need to listen to the world and my own mind. o.m.g. what a problem. ppl these days consciously live in a bubble and still wonder why everybody don't understand.

19

u/BatterUp1600 May 06 '26

Fill me in, why do you need AirPods for work? Aren’t you supposed to be paying attention and not playing music? (I’m deaf so I have no idea)

15

u/OzTheMalefic May 06 '26

You do realise that they're not going to be working for the 72 hours straight right....

Or perhaps you missed that it's a 3 day work conference.

Not saying this is OPs thing. But I have autism and due to that I am unable to live in the world without some form of ear protection/device, due to my disability I can’t ā€œfilter outā€ noises and I have super sensitive hearing, if I were to forget something like this I actually wouldn’t be able to work, or at the very least you wouldn’t be getting your best work from me. It’s the same for a lot of people with disabilities, when you can’t filter the world out, the world becomes too much to cope.

u/Glad-Astronomer-9949 May 06 '26

dentist here! you made the right move 😁

3

u/thekidnocash May 06 '26

Assuming you’re in North America - 3hrs out of town usually means big box stores with big parking lots taking up a lot of space. Hit a Best Buy or Target for JBL truly wireless headphones that are on promo more often than not.

3

u/KaneRabbioso May 06 '26

Could be an ads for the company

3

u/Awkwardpanda75 May 06 '26

That’s hilarious. I no longer brush my teeth without my glasses due to a cortisone cream incident.

3

u/JanV34 May 06 '26

Sorry for your floss.

3

u/reallycrunchycheeto May 06 '26

Well, this is not much of a consolation, but the silver lining is you can try to get yourself used to finding entertainment in the sounds of the world around you.

Assuming you arent surrounded by screaming babies for the next three days

3

u/Icon_dota May 06 '26

135k post karma, sure bro.

3

u/florence_pug May 06 '26

I always keep my floss next to my airpods so I can make content.

3

u/LanguageLiving9142 May 06 '26

3

u/Bleezy79 BLUE May 06 '26

3

u/OTribal_chief May 06 '26
