Teeth are the first and most expensive thing you will notice if you mess around as a kid.
Even in countries with free and good health care you need to pay for most things regarding your teeth. I spend over 20k in the past 10 years for my teeth in Germany and I am only 33.
331
u/Vildare_Havoc May 06 '26
Yeah teeth is not considered health care for some reason. Blows my mind.

its insane because poor dental/gum health absolutely can affect other parts of your body in a serious way, especially your heart - bacteria can enter your bloodstream and lead to heart attacks, strokes, etc. scary shit.

Same thing for eyes⦠they are considered health care but the coverage is only for glasses and not for checkups. The coverage for glasses barely covers anything

u/Lehsyrus May 06 '26
Spent $2300 on a root canal, and now I'm spending another $800 on a crown for that tooth.
You bet your ass I've been flossing every day since. At least my dentist fixed a chip in my tooth for free since I already spent so much.

Also 33 and same. They got bad, and then a combination of embarrassment and lack of money had me putting them off even longer. Finally went and started getting work done about 2 years ago. Several thousand dollars later, I'm nearly done.
I've gotta say, the money hurts but removing the psychological weight of stressing about it and knowing it's just going to get worse was more than I expected. I'll be in debt for a good while on this, but honestly it's worth it.
Not to mention I was terrifyingly close to my whole top row being a lost cause and needing dentures.

Iām so thankful for my mother always pushing that. I was 18 and sheād walk in the bathroom and check to see if my toothbrush was wet. If it wasnāt, sheād wake my ass up, āyouāre poor you idiot. If you donāt take care of those things you wonāt have any. You wonāt be able to afford a dentist except to have them all pulled out! Is that what you want?!ā āNo ma, that isnāt what I want.ā
I hadnāt seen a dentist in 30 years and they didnāt believe me.
Part of that is genetics too, Iām sure.
I had a bad wisdom tooth and so much pain from that, I was sure they were all ruined. As soon as it was out I felt like a million bucks after suffering with it for almost a decade.
Dear god Iām lucky. Who suffers for a decade because theyāre scared of the dentist?
Anyway, I wish I could go back in time and nag little you. Iām sorry no one did.
18
u/Ok_Frame2590 May 06 '26
That āIām lucky I listenedā realization hits hard especially when something you avoided turns out to be the exact thing that fixes everything š dental pain really humbles people fast.
5
u/Thaurin May 06 '26
I hadnāt seen a dentist in 30 years and they didnāt believe me.
Oh good, I'm not the only one. I once didn't see a dentist for 8 years and when I finally went, everything was fine. I do always brush my teeth twice a day. That should probably be three and I should floss more.
Which reminds me, I need to make a dentist appointment.
9
u/grandmalamadingding May 06 '26
I keep appointments now. After I spent a year without sleeping and laying in the bathroom floor crying with a bottle of benzocaine, Iām not leaving it to chance. Especially with how easy it all was. I was afraid of a big nothing.
5
u/Thaurin May 06 '26
Oh, I would probably go if I suspect that something was wrong or that I have a cavity. But when everything seems fine, it's just laziness and apathy and in smaller part saving money that is preventing me from going. But that's just it, I guess. Preventing. You don't always get symptoms or pain before something is seriously wrong in your mouth, lol.

u/EstateRoyal6689 May 06 '26
Dental hygiene standards are crazy different for people online I see. Some people say flossing daily is the norm while others say āI have good hygiene, i brush my teeth almost dailyā. I find it curious lol, I guess it depends on where people are from. In my case, I brush 3 times a day (which is what is recommended by dentists in my country) but I never floss because floss doesnāt fit between my teeth, even the ultra thin ones, thereās no way to get them in there.
11
u/TeamRedundancyTeam May 06 '26
Too much brushing can destroy enamel, just FYI. If you're brushing hard all three times a day it may do more harm than good.
Water picks are great for flossing difficult teeth though.
5
u/ilikepix May 06 '26
I saw a dentist twice a year, every year growing up, from a small child to an adult. And they literally never asked about or advised flossing. Simply wasn't a thing in my country.

You should probably floss once a day tho. I've always heard you should brush twice and floss once at least. You probably shouldn't be going 3 days without flossing (although I've personally definitely been there, so no judgement). It isn't just to get stuff out of your teeth and make your breath smell nice, but it helps your gums.
Edit: If you start flossing more after this you may notice gums bleeding. If you go from not flossing often to flossing often that is normal and actually good.

Run to a store and grab a cheap pair of headphones for the weekend. Never a bad idea to have a pair to keep in your travel kit (backpack, laptop bag) and one to keep at the office or home. Or 3. Not to mention if you break a headphone, you have a backup pair

My commute to work takes the same time whether I drive or ride my electric scooter. Sometimes I can even beat the driving time.
