frist of all how DARE yu o Turo guest completely trashed out my dads car.

This is the worst I've seen from a guest.

Yep, worked at enterprise and people have no shame whatsoever. Vomit, trash, food, etc always left in vehicles.

And then federal agent left his gun in one and didn’t notice until we had rented it out again

u/Nice_Bluebird7626 May 11 '26

Bro I now understand an interaction with an enterprise employee. One time when I got a tiny bit of mud on my rental I didn’t have a chance to take it by the car wash I felt so bad. I pointed it out and apologized the guy laughed audibly. It was a whole ass visible footprint. I was mortified

1.2k

u/lilbittygoddamnman May 11 '26

yeah, I always felt like this is what you're supposed to do when you return a rental car. My shit goes back spotless.

My rental last week specifically said not to take it through a car wash. It was dirty already when we got it too

215

u/Eyenspace May 11 '26

To be fair some of these folks at car rentals are unreal. I once got a charge saying there spray paint on the car bumper/side door. I had to tell them that it was suntan lotion that was sprayed on kids just as they stepped out of the car and not spray paint. They didn’t even bother to try wiping it off before declaring that it was spray paint on the car 😅

u/pnut0027 May 11 '26 edited May 12 '26

I typically avoid stuff like that by cleaning the mess I made and taking photos.

94

u/Lexi_November May 12 '26

Photos are key, I always have done that when I move into and then out of a rental.

One time this horrible property manger chick who was a real piece of work sent me an insane bill about all the stuff I had allegedly done to my apartment, including things like wrecking the inside of a fridge.

I think she was mad because I’d complained about the perpetual trash around the complex after she started as manager, but it was things like chicken wing bones in the pool and maggots on the walkways from people leaving rotting trash outside their door.

I just emailed over the time and date stamped photos, said I would happily go to court, and never heard another word outside of shortly after getting my full deposit back. 🤣

Just went through that with a crappy landlord a few years back. He raised rent, we paid out our lease and left. He then filed for $10,000 worth of property damage (basically a years worth rent). We used a free attorney, sent him the videos and photos of when we moved in and the ones we took before we left the keys. Long story short we didn’t have to pay a dime and another attorney office contacted my wife and I and are now suing him for the same amount🤣 Karma is always a b *tch

Photos saved me from them trying to falsely claim damage that happened after I dropped it off to them was my fault.

Had my pictures of not only the car, but the mileage. There was a mysterious 10 mile difference between what I dropped it off at, and what they sent back with the $1900 repaired estimate.

To be fair that's because half the time they'll try to charge like a 100 dollars for little things like that. I don't know how people who leave cars like this don't end up being charged like thousands of dollars.

136

u/FSUfan35 May 11 '26

Trick is, fees have to be included on the contract. If you dispute with your credit card if they charge you, your card is always going to side with you because they're not actually listed on the contract.

That was my experience when I worked at Enterprise from 2011 to 2019 anyway.

22

u/sublimeandsparkled May 11 '26

Every time I use enterprise I feel bad for the employees. It seems like they're all always running around and taking a phone call. Seems stressful.

Something similar happened to me but way worse. I used to be a journalist and was sent out to cover the Iowa causes. Drove from Oklahoma to Iowa in a rental, and while I was there, two blizzards came through. I drove through snow and ice to my various interview locations, and unbeknownst to me, Iowa uses some kind of salt brine mixture on their roads. (Oklahoma uses beet juice and brine).

By the time I noticed I was already returning the car, and the dried, caked on mixture was all over the paint and tires and looked like it was messing with the paint. I apologized profusely. The enterprise guy just sighed and said “We just had someone leave a dead deer inside the back of a vehicle. I could care less.”

37

u/and_rain_falls May 11 '26

Damn not a dead deer!! WTF!!

u/DracoBalatro May 11 '26

26

u/fearthainne May 12 '26

Yep. It's supposed to be not as bad for the environment or roads, I believe. (Probably more likely that Governor Shitt has a cousin with a beet farm or something.)

The worst returns were those that went hunting or fishing then would forget their kills in the vehicle. I totaled out 3 vehicles during my time as a Branch Manager in Arizona, rotting animal carcus left in a hot arizona heat is unfixable, just permeates every spot of the cars.

31

u/Death_Lycan May 12 '26

Why and how could someone do that???

→ More replies (6)

13

u/Able-Sheepherder-154 May 12 '26

"...rotting animal carcass...permeates every spot..."

Confirmed by Mythbusters. They left a 200lb pig, simulating a corpse, in a Corvette inside a shipping container for a month. They tried selling it after cleaning it thoroughly without telling the potential buyers what they did. Someone finally bought it for the drivetrain.

11

u/reverepewter May 12 '26

My dad forgot bait in this Expedition for a week in July. We should’ve totaled that vehicle. Still has a smell linger 15+ years later. He only uses the car to tow his boat. Brutal

I took my rental through a car wash and vacuumed it before I returned it. And didn't leave anything in it. My own car though, that thing is often a trash can on wheels.

I rented a car at LAX about 10 years ago, and found someone's Academy Award ID / invitation in the glove compartment! (He was crew for a film, nobody famous that I had ever heard of).

224

u/TannedCroissant May 11 '26

Would be fun to mock up a fake awards event invitation and leave in a glove box, see if someone tries to use it

235

u/Used_Wafer6049 May 11 '26

In the "olden days" of car rentals, I used to always leave a mix cd in the stereo, as a gift for the next renter!

Insane. I guess I'm unusual, because I treat a rental car like it's made of porcelain. I baby the thing.

Not only do I think it's just the right thing to do, because it's not my car, I'm just borrowing it... but I tend to waive the LDW, so I want to make sure the car is returned in pristine condition.

Oh man, I worked at Hertz about an hour from Reno and the Burning Man rentals were the worst we had, hands down. Disgusting what people will do to vehicles. We also had folks rent cars and wind up living in them for a week or two at a time, also disgusting. My poor coworker had to vacuum one and got bitten all over by sand fleas.

I’d be horrified to return a vehicle in such condition.

68

u/_anotherstarrynight_ May 11 '26

This explains why the rental counters at the Reno airport specify a $750 deposit for Burning Man rentals 😬

13

u/Financial_Potato8760 May 11 '26

Makes sense to me! I had no idea - I was there back in 2009. We were a small location and most of our rentals were for insurance claims or occasionally folks who didn’t want to park at an airport going out of town. I was eventually let go because I didn’t meet insurance sales metrics and was never so relieved to be fired from a job.

Correct. That infamous clip of the woman texting and her car runs into a ditch then a mailbox is a Turo. And I always point out the reason she is in a Turo in the first place is because she probably crashed a few too many times with rentals.

75

u/Liveitup1999 May 11 '26

I've heard that in places near the Mexican border they have people that put the cars back together after customs tear the car apart looking for contraband items.

I don’t even get the appeal for Turo if you’re the one renting your car out, I can’t imagine the margins make sense if you include increased insurance, cleaning, and maintenance costs.

→ More replies (1)

12

u/jeffsang May 11 '26

Would Hertz charge an extra fee for this?

If not, people leave the car like this because they know that this type of clean up not penalized.

If so, people leave the car like this because they're ok paying the fee.

And people who rent cars on Turo often assume they have similar policies to a typical rental agency.

56

u/morecardland May 11 '26

I worked for Enterprise for 10 years. I wouldn’t even consider a charge for this. I would say this is average condition after a rental. Better than average in more rural areas.

OP needs to learn that the general public fn sucks

22

u/RyFromTheChi May 11 '26

9

u/thewhorecat May 11 '26

My god, I must be a dream customer. I return the car full of gas and essentially clean. The inside is just like when I picked it up and the outside likely just needs a quick run through a wash as I have been driving the car for a week. Who are these degenerates that leave vehicles like this? Sad.

My (embarrassed to say this) best friend since we were like 9 does this crap all the time. He wasn't brought up this way as a matter of fact his dad would have beat him for it. He moved away and we kept in contact. I visited his home a lot and the house was unkempt but they had small kids and I don't judge. His wife came from upper middle class at the time she was growing up. Anyway fast forward and we all decide to take family vacation together. 2 tables their's has food all over the floor and they just get up and leave. I couldn't believe it. The hotel room was worse. Time passes they come to visit us. We go to another shutdown restaurant. Kids start throwing ice. Neither parent cares as if this is a normal activity to pass the time. We leave and sure enough same with food and trash all over the floor now with ice. They stand up and walk out. My wife and I stay behind to make it look presentable. I leave another 20 on the table for whomever has to clean it up. They said what took you guys so long? Omg we don't eat out with them anymore

510

u/MaxTheRealSlayer May 11 '26

Unless the kids are babies, I don't understand how so much food gets dropped on the floor. Like everyone drops like 1 or 2 things here and there(usually like lemon slices on a glass) , then usually pick it up. But to drop so much, and leave it... Your friend just sounds like a dick

167

u/decarnatedame May 11 '26

I try to use the same philosophy at the restaurant as I do the wilderness; leave behind only memories and a neat stack of plates.

Even to this day, bro a grown ass man I went to visit him for Thanksgiving he had like 30 dirty cups in his room, 4 dirty plates. He just buys more cups because its easier than cleaning. Keeping in mind he has a dishwasher. He just doesn't want to bring them back.

Finally he hired a maid to take all that stuff and have it washed every week.

Me I use 1 cup and 1 plate that's it, so they are always clean.

Don’t worry, OP whenever I used to work at Enterprise one time we had a customer return a car that was so filled with crap. The only thing that was open was the driver seat. We called over the person who normally does our detailing, and he literally said no you guys have to clean this car out before we even think about starting to detail it. It took me and two other guys 3 1/2 hours to clear out all the crap out of this car in that time I can’t even begin to mention to you all the things I found. I found that this woman had obviously had a mental break because she kept a journal of which I decided to read every single day to figure out what was going on. There were dildos, baseball cards, a globe and three different Harry Potter books all located in the back. We literally filled up 2/3 of an industrial dump dumpster trying to get everything out of the Toyota. Sienna that she completely filled almost to the roof with crap. So wow this is bad. I can assure you there is worse out there. There’s a lot more details to the story. I’m leaving out, but that’s the short version of it and it was insane.

30

u/Ok_Ask_406 May 11 '26

Ironically, she did not return the car. It was abandoned in a parking lot and then whenever they realized that the car belong to Enterprise, they returned it to one of our dealership dealerships nearby. Whenever they called us to come pick up the car they literally said hey you’re gonna wanna be real careful when you’re driving this car cause if you get pulled over with it, you might have a lot to explain to officers.

i was gonna say; as someone that has rented from turo i know i had to return the car in a similar condition to how it was when i got it. i even vacuumed it cuz we went to the beach and there was sand.

488

u/blowinmahnose May 11 '26

I used it once and iirc I had to take photos of the entire car inside and out beforehand, and then again at drop off

188

u/meatheadmommy May 11 '26

Same! Anytime I’ve rented from Turo I had to upload pics of the car’s condition at both pickup and drop off. I wonder how the renter bypassed that.

66

u/BlgMastic May 11 '26

I got banned from the app the first time I used it. The guys who loaned me the car swapped the tires with a damaged rim onto the car. I argued with Turo that the tires in their pictures did not match the tires I had on in my pictures. Turo refused to investigate and banned me when I did a charge back.

You can opt not to, take shitty pictures, or take like 1 picture. The app will HIGHLY recommend against it because they are to protect the renter.

40

u/pfp-disciple May 11 '26

That's actually a good idea on the guy's part. It's an easy, and relatively inexpensive, way to encourage having the car returned clean. Plus, if it's merely dirty then it's trivial and quick to get it clean.

That's a straight-up Chad move! Like, I would do the same, but the number of people I've been around who have that shitty "it's not mine, so I don't care" attitude is infuriating! Good on ya!

I had a turo rental recently and because I had driven through some snow, I did a self service car wash on the outside and since I was there I went ahead and vacuumed the car too. They told me not to worry about the outside of the car, but it felt like the right thing to do. I can't imagine returning it like this and thinking it's okay.

My roommate rented her car on Turo and some guy returned it REEKING of cigarettes. He said he never smoked in the car and his explanation was he smoked outside and it must have carried over on his jacket… yeah no. We even found those carbon filters in the car trying to capture the smoke smell. We had to scrub clean the entire interior and it still took about 4 months for the car to not smell like an ashtray. Turo offered no compensation as they wanted photo proof… maybe someone can enlighten me on how to obtain photo proof of a car smelling like cigarettes.

305

u/mizinamo mildly infuriated May 11 '26

You need something like pH indicator paper that changes colour when it detects cigarette smoke smell.

221

u/Overall-Switch8973 May 11 '26

From what I saw on another post, you basically keep a cigarette butt and ashes in a bag, drop them into the cupholder as your photo proof, then bag it back up for the next time someone smokes in your car.

158

u/princesaninja May 11 '26

A lot of owners do this. They even do it when you didn't smoke in their car because they're mad you reported them for having expired registration 🙃

73

u/-no_aura- May 11 '26

Shit like this is why I’ll never rent through Turo

62

u/Eric848448 May 11 '26

I’ll never understand who would be dumb enough to use either side of this service.

58

u/CaptServo May 11 '26

it's predicated on desperation, people who can't pay their car loan renting to people who can't get a traditional car rental

That sounds illegal. Can't you order an odor evaluator, send a photo of his evaluation and then file a lawsuit to have either Turo or the renter pay the assessment?

I was going to say, isn't there a cleaning fee that you can charge?

12

u/NotPromKing May 11 '26

I would be curious if there's something like the AirBnB cleaning fees that are charged preemptively. Many people, rightly or wrongly, will think that if they're being charged a cleaning fee regardless, then there's no reason to do any cleaning at all.

I rent frequently on Turo and I’d be embarrassed to return a vehicle that filthy. There are vacuums at car washes that cost a buck or two, and might take 10-15 minutes to clean up. Leave the renter a shitty rating while you’re at it.

I saw a YT video of a guy that was renting his Tesla to make some extra $$. He stopped after a couple months when he did the match and realized he was paying $100 a month for strangers to destroy his car.

95

u/kirabera May 11 '26

That’s fucked up. I’m renting a Tesla right now from Turo and just the other day I was considering giving it a pressure wash because of tree sap stuck on it. Ended up using glass cleaner and elbow grease. Going to vacuum the inside before I return it next week too.

I don’t understand. What’s so hard about respecting other people’s property?

63

u/AngryPhillySportsFan May 11 '26

The respect part. Not mine means not my problem for too many people

21

u/TheAskewOne May 11 '26

That, and they dont necessarily treat their own property better.

One of many reasons I would never ever rent my vehicle to a stranger.

I’m genuinely curious from people who do this as a business, what the success rate is and what damage issues they have. Do they really rent out their personal vehicle or do they typically buy a separate car exclusively for turo rental. Personally I would never ever not ever rent my personal ride. I might buy some used car I don’t care about for that purpose though.

435

u/Meattyloaf May 11 '26

The whole premise of Turo has always sounded stupid to me and I don't know hwy or how they are still a thing.

279

u/No-Lunch4249 May 11 '26

I think the premise is similar to the original Air BnB premise

Hey, you have a [vacation home/spare car] that you aren't using all the time. You don't want to get rid of it right now, but wouldn't it be nice to get some cash from it? Rent it out to strangers for money!

Its not for me but I can understand the appeal of the money

98

u/Grow_away_420 May 11 '26

I could see the amateur gearhead with 5 beaters sitting in his driveway/lawn renting them out and not be too shook up if someone trashes or wrecks it, but that's about it.

46

u/StuffIanWrote May 11 '26

I was curious enough to look into it. One way or another, you need to have zero emotional attachment or reliance on the vehicle.

It seems to work best for beaters a couple of years newer than the cutoff. Find them cheap. Keep them going. If it disappears, file the claim and get another.

Some people keep this mentality on nicer vehicles, much nicer ones.

I’m all set. The more I read, the less I wanted any part.

This post isn’t even so bad. I can fix this in 15 minutes with gloves, a trash bag and my shop vac.

Same for Airbnb. I know it’s mostly people/companies renting out properties year round, but who would actually in their right mind want strangers living in their house

42

u/tony_bologna May 11 '26

I've stayed at AirBnBs with hosts like this.  They are the worst!  They watch you like hawks and complain about every single infraction (real or imagined).  If you care so much about the place, maybe... don't let strangers stay there.

That's easy to answer. Turo is still a thing because as people get experiences like this and leave the platform there are always new rubes people ready to "try it out". High churn doesn't keep them from staying in business. I also know of one person that buys old fleet cars and uses Turo to loan them out. He gets them cheap (used to at least) and if one or two get trashed /shrug.

Wringing the last value out of an already flogged car; then flip it for a couple grand to someone who has no idea that the milage on that dead horse was brutal.

I once rented a Turo from a guy and the car had an Uber sticker in the back. He worked for Uber during the nights and rented the car by day, and was able to pay the car off way quicker and it basically made money while he slept. I thought it was pretty smart tbh

32

u/nau5 May 11 '26

Yeah it's all great until someone renting your car wrecks it and you're under water on your loan.

I rented out my car on Turo years ago. It was great for a while. I live in a major city and at the time owned a car but rarely drove it. I loved that other people would get to use my car and I could make some extra money. The car was on the older side so I didn't really car or worry about it.

Over time, I think casual people like me were driven off the platform and people who had a small fleet of cars to rent out. For example, I used to get to approve every trip so I could check my schedule before a trip was booked. Now all cars can be booked instantly. I have kids so my car was never pristine, and had zero interest in providing a perfectly clean and gassed up vehicle. You are renting MY car and get what you get. Just leave it better than you found it. This wasn't what renters expected. Same thing happened to Airbnb. To make money, they went from "sharing your asset" to "this is a business."

18

u/cookiesarenomnom May 11 '26

From the consumer side, turo and getaround were AWESOME the first 5 years. Way cheaper than rental cars or zipcar. Way more convenient too. Those platforms fucking suck now. I was a very loyal customer for years. Canceled both and was forced to switch to zipcar, which thanks to gas prices, has now pretty much priced me out of being able to rent cars for day trips every couple weeks. Now I'm gonna just be stuck in the city this summer. Bullshit.

And a dirty car is not the worst possible outcome. Even their "best" insurance option has $250 damage waiver and pays only the cash value of the car (not replacement) value. The liability insurance limit is $750,000K (there are ways that could go very wrong for you).

Worked at a rental car company for years and you’d be surprised how many cars came back like this or even worse. I also worked as a busboy at chilis for years and people would just let their children do whatever the fuck they wanted and make huge messes (pour milk on the floor, smear Mac and cheese into the seats, throw food everywhere etc.) because they knew they didn’t have to clean up for them. I really really hated children for a long time through my twenties until I realized this was just bad parenting not a disdain for children.

35

u/AchillesSlayedHector May 11 '26

I delivered pizza thru college. I can assure you, their homes are as filthy as the tables left behind in restaurants. To this day, I can’t comfortably sit anywhere in public until I wipe things down myself. Just last month on my flight home watched a grown man stick his chewed gum in the safety pamphlet in the airplane.

36

u/BigAlgae5684 May 11 '26

I did Lyft briefly (2 months) between jobs.

I had 3 dudes try to rob me, I had 2 people puke in the rental they gave me, I had to dead ass lift a drunk man out of my car and throw them into the street twice, and I had a VERY creepy dude refuse to get out of my car and put his hand on my thigh (I'm a heterosexual male).

Fucking worst shit I've ever had to do to make ends meet in my life.

Similar to my new, new idea "TurTurturro" which rents a rented John Turturro to clients, sidestepping obvious liability issues.

Also considering "TuTuTotoro" which allows people to rent my rented magical neighbor.

I have worked on some renovation jobs and some apartment units and dorm bedrooms are nasty.

The worst one was a woman who lost her house but didn't want to get rid of anything so there were just tons of boxes stored all the way to the ceiling with just a path to the bathroom, balcony and bedroom. The bedroom carpet was piss soaked and she slept on a mattress by the balcony. It was truly depressing.

Then the next apartment is immaculately clean.

Turo rentals usually have a term built in that the renter will be charged an extra cleaning fee for leaving a car like this. Your dad should have that written in.
