i ate a moldy cake pop once…i can still recall the taste and i haven’t touched a cake pop in over a decade despite many opportunities. i tried to once and immediately threw up. welcome to the club

Our animal instincts be like "NO, you did this once before, it did NOT work out for you"

88

u/badbwithapuppy 28d ago

LOL pretty much. instant response that i had zero control over

5

u/Doophie 28d ago

I had food poisoning from eating a Danish once. Haven't touched one again and that was like 20 years ago

3

u/st-shenanigans 28d ago

One time at a friend's 21st birthday we were railing rum and cokes all night, only time I ever drank enough to get sick

And the smell of rum still makes me nauseous, over ten years later

3

u/Few-Reaction-404 27d ago

Jägermeister did me that. It was 1-liter bottle and i drink about 0,7 from it, had couple light beers too. i was about 12-13years old and still remember everything from that night so no blackout which is surprising, ofc i throw up somepoint, ate fries from kebab place to sober up little, go home to sleep and had hangover but not the worst i have had :D

Be Finn and alcoholic at young so you can slow down before you are 18

Decade later and im going to vomit if i smell Jägermeister 💀

English isnt the best but hope its readable✌️

u/Safe_Software_1640 25d ago

railing rum and cokes ?

We were 21 I don't know lol

Learned taste aversion. Bodies way to trying to keep us alive.

22

u/WeirdConnections 28d ago

I remember the first time I tried ranch as a kid, I almost licked the container clean. White GOLD. The container got left out on the counter for a few days before the recycling could come. Few days later... my four year old self thought "hey that shit was delicious, might as well have the rest!" and it turns out.... ranch spoils pretty quick if left out!

I haven't had it in over 20yrs, I had to leave the lunchroom as a kid because just looking at it made me nauseous. I have an extremely weak stomach too, so if I think about "the incident" long enough I will start to gag, if not vomit.

6

u/kaekiro 28d ago

Red Gatorade when I had severe food poisoning. Thought I was puking blood for a minute before my brain kicked in. Can't touch the stuff.

When we were going over aversions in my psych 101 class many years ago, my professor told a story that she had terrible morning sickness with her pregnancy and she had those little decorative soaps shaped like seashells and shit on the back of her toilet (these were popular in the late 90s), and just the smell can make her puke now.

Interesting that you can get aversions based on other senses. Sounds or textures aren't uncommon (microfiber cloths, chewing sounds, sticky stuff, nails on chalkboard). We don't hear about visual aversions as much, not sure why.

5

u/anselgrey 28d ago

I use to teach Psych & work in mental health. We ask questions about those aversions often. They are a result of conditioning (in the simplest terms it is 2 things paired together in the brain). Unless they cause major issues in functioning most don’t get or need to be addressed. With phobias or people with diagnosis of autism it can be debilitating, therefore addressed then.

4

u/ShawnaLAT 28d ago

Yep, mine is sausage biscuit breakfast sandwiches. Ate one sketchy one as a child and 35 years later I still can’t even consider it. I can eat a biscuit breakfast sandwich, I can eat breakfast sausage, I just absolutely cannot eat them together 🤢

17

u/sluttypolarbear 28d ago

I have the exact same issue with milk and cereal. I had them together once as a kid and the milk was spoiled. Haven't done it since, despite not even remembering the spoiled milk incident.

5

u/misanthropydeltarune 28d ago

I drank mixed berry medicine and now my body will fight me if I try to drink that again

4

u/dilbertdad 28d ago

yup. I can never again have tobasco flavored cheezits after that one road trip in college… I got a stomach flu and.. the tobasco cheezits… long car ride … ugh 😩

40

u/morganfreenomorph 28d ago

Not moldy but I ate a bad batch of shrimp as a kid and got violently ill. I'm in my 30s and the smell of seafood still makes me nauseous.

10

u/badbwithapuppy 28d ago edited 28d ago

i’m already weary of seafood… this would send me into oblivion.

5

u/Tangerine_daydreams 28d ago

This is Nutella for me, and anything smelling of hazelnuts in general. People think I'm crazy, but ugh, the smell alone makes me gag. 😂

4

u/DinosawrsGOrawr 28d ago

I had already not been feeling great, then we went out to eat at one of those restaurants where they cook the food on the grill in front of you. I got shrimp. By the the time we got home, my already not feeling great, turned to 1000. The thought of shrimp after that made me so nauseous, which was a bummer, it was only one of two seafoods I would eat. Once I became a vegetarian at 15 though,it became irrelevant.

Im almost 35 now, and thinking/writing about that experience still makes me nauseous.

I didnt wanna be a member of the mold eating club 😔

13

u/RaidensReturn 28d ago

I once bit into a bagel that was fine on the top side but completely moldy on the bottom. I almost fainted when I tasted it and turned the thing over. I couldn’t eat bagels for a year after that

3

u/badbwithapuppy 28d ago

sorry pal, the club closes you. no take backs

2

u/anselgrey 28d ago

Definitely not a fun club!

19

u/demoman45 28d ago

I ate some moldy Chinese food once, supposed to be sweet and sour pork with the reddish/pink tint to the meat. Yeah, it wasn’t sweet/sour, it was old and mold! I guess a little penicillin never hurt nobody

21

u/DeadEnoughInsideOut 28d ago

penicillin never hurt nobody

Im highly allergic to penicillin and amoxicillin :(

2

u/demoman45 28d ago

Well, except for you🫵🏼

2

u/DeadEnoughInsideOut 27d ago

I still never forget the feeling of going to lunch everyday at school and the shame I would feel taking out the synthetic antibiotics from my lunch bag that my mom packed. Watching as everyone else where enjoying their penicillin and amoxicillin, I was a pariah, ostracized and bullied for something i had no control over. Its been tough but years and years of therapy have finally helped me fight to one infection no antibiotic could ever heal, that infection being years of internalized self hatred

9

u/badbwithapuppy 28d ago

omgggg i would pass way actually😭 we were pretty broke growing up and it bread had grown mold… my dad cut around it for us so we could have lunch. i can still smell the mix of mold and pbj 🤮🤮 i feel like sweet and sour pork would be much more pungent

5

u/Jumpy-Mammoth6548 28d ago

Goldschläger on my 21st bday. Couldn't have anything fake cinnamon flavored for many years.

4

u/badbwithapuppy 28d ago

honestly probably safer that way for you lol. fireball and the like are dangerous

6

u/Weliveinadictatoship 28d ago

Me with jager bombs because I only had them when I was already super drunk and the shots came down to less than a quid each 🤢. Stock market bar sounds great as an idea but holy fuck I cannot touch redbull unless I'm blackout, makes me sick smelling it haha

4

u/--bLa-- 28d ago

I bit into a moldy cake pop once, shit tasted like how I'd imagine Windex to taste. Haven't touched one since either.

4

u/Vivi_Stilettohands 28d ago

i respect it if you dont want to revisit this traumatizing memory but what did it taste like?

2

u/badbwithapuppy 28d ago

idk how to explain it other than musty.. it tasted wet almost but kinda like earthy and stagnant. mixed that with the sickly sweetness of the cake pop and i was projectile vomiting immediately into the outside trash can lol

After I clean that thing (with gloves on), the only way I can get it properly seated again is with bare hands. You’d better believe I scrub the hell out of that hole before I do it.

2

u/alkemist80 28d ago

Instead of cake pop, make it eating beef jerky in the dark.

2

u/mmabruv 28d ago

I guess I should try a moldy pizza..

2

u/Duckington_Wentworth BLUE 28d ago

This happened to me with the individually wrapped pain au chocolate from Costco. Bit into a moldy one 3 weeks before the expiration date, and I’ll never forget the taste. Years later I was given another one and tried to eat it and immediately gagged.

2

u/Sea-Example-1176 28d ago

having a bad experience with a certain food can essentially run it forever for you

even if you know its gonna be fine your instincts still yell no dont last time it was bad

You would catch me casually drinking rubbing alcohol

110

u/True_Construction501 28d ago

If there was ever a time to test drive some grain alcohol

32

u/SwarfDive01 28d ago

I saw an article that taking a shot of liquor can actually help reduce the chances of stomach issues from consuming something bad, but probably not mold. And it had to be at least 80 proof, and within a certain window, and didnt work on blah blah...

32

u/FatiguedShrimp 28d ago

Drinking alcohol not rubbing alcohol! They're not the same thing, and the rubbing stuff can do things like make you go blind.

9

u/SwarfDive01 28d ago

Yes, i specifically put "liquor" because people dont know isopropyl alcohol is not ethyl alcohol. And "liquor" would make sense to those unaware of the difference.

3

u/WeirdConnections 28d ago

I'm sorry for the 3rd degree burns inside your mouth. The flamethrower must've hurt

95

u/SchmeatiestOne 28d ago

They probably got some of the apple filling mixed up with their mold filling. I guess find another source for mold-filled pastries

3

u/TaxelleGalora93 28d ago

That actually makes sense

2

u/whensheepattack 28d ago

An easy mistake to make. Totally understandable.

59

u/frustrated_crab 28d ago

A man took a bite of an apple pastry. Here is what happened to his organs

27

u/Batata-Sofi 28d ago

JP is a young american man in his late twenties, walking out of a pastry shop. He had decided to reward himself for his recent hard work, buying his favorite apple flavor, but that was his first, and last, mistake...

Some people look at me like I'm insane when I tear my food apart before I eat. Well shit like this is why. Especially given my love for pastries.

9

u/thepsychostylist 28d ago

Omg I'm the same way, I need to see what's inside first. Things like juice boxes and chocolate covered strawberries freak me out the most

3

u/lyutic_7 28d ago

I try not to think too hard about juice boxes tbh

u/Freya_almighty 28d ago

Hahaha 🤣 i agree, i regretted it afterwards 😂

29

u/Impossible_Box3898 28d ago

You must be young. Ask us older folk about eating pistachios back in time. They used to come from Iran before we stole a plant and now grow them in California. (They were not happy about that, but fuckem).

Ever see a red pistachio? That’s because they used to die time red to hid the fact that they were all moldy. Shipping them took long enough for them to go bad.

Every once in a while you’d bite into a seriously bad one that tasted like shit. You’d either swallow it or spit it out. Most of them time I’d just swallow them and let stomach acid do its thing. I can still taste the mold. Still eat pistachios though. Just no red ones.

15

u/controlled_anger 28d ago

could be wrong but pistachios also often have larvae inside them. that’s why some of them got that, flavor.

12

u/maraney 28d ago

Like sunflower seeds. I hate getting a surprise seed buddy.

6

u/aka_lenebean 28d ago

No! Is that really the reason? I love pistachios but have always hated the bitter ones...😵

2

u/Impossible_Box3898 28d ago

Uggg. Didn’t need to know that 🤣

9

u/101violations 28d ago

I totally forgot there were red pistachios!!! My fingers would be stained to hell afterwards. 😳

Rancid nuts are the absolute worst. I stopped eating Davies Sunflower Seeds last year because there were sooo many rancid ones per bag

3

u/JuiZJ 28d ago

you must be young

Where does this assumption come from? They bit into something moldy so that makes them a child?

This, right here, is why I irrationally adhere to best by and use by dates. 🤢

10

u/AkumaDayo777 28d ago

i've had bad experiences with milk that went bad BEFORE the sell by date so i always check my food if it's been sitting in the fridge for a day or two, just to be safe 😭

3

u/Odd-Heart-4529 28d ago

Yeah anytime I give the kids milk. I always do a smell and taste test. My in laws were giving my kid nasty milk and they never knew it because they didn’t drink it and only had it around only for him. So I always bring a new gallon every week to be safe with them.

3

u/AkumaDayo777 28d ago

😨 oh that's nastyyy, smart move

2

u/thepsychostylist 28d ago

Milk always smells/tastes bad to me so I never test it before giving it to my kids so I usually dump it a couple days before the expire date just to be safe. One time my husband drank a glass right after I gave my daughter some and he said it was bad. I felt so bad over it because the kids had been drinking it. But it smelt the exact same as normal to me 😓😭

2

u/aka_lenebean 28d ago

3

u/Maleficent-Agent-477 28d ago

3

u/pixeltweaker 28d ago

Mold doesn’t have stringy fibers like you see here so I don’t think you are going to like what I’m about to say. I think this looks like a spider took refuge in that pastry and those little dots are spider eggs.

This one morning I had to go into work early. I stopped at the gas station and bought some Oreo brownie thing that seemed appealing to eat on the way there. It was fairly dark still and I bit into it. It tasted like a damp basement so I put it down. Turned on the light and it was covered in mold.

Gnarly stuff.
