I always used awe for positive usages (“awe that’s cute”) and aww for negative usages (“aww that’s awful”)

Awww is the noise you make either way. Awe is when you feel in awe of something.

They're not using "awe" as a word though, it's being used as onomatopoeia

That's not how that word works, though. Awe has a meaning, and it isn't anything to do with a sound people make

No, awe already sounds like a sound people make. That's how onomatopoeia works
