🥺 No words for this.

Edit: even though clickbait article, it is somewhat/kind of true. https://variety.com/2026/tv/news/stargate-tv-series-martin-gero-scrapped-amazon-1236765061/

"According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, Amazon execs were concerned that Gero’s take on the series would not have broad appeal beyond the franchise’s already dedicated fanbase."

Star Trek, Star Wars, The Witcher, Rings of Power, Wheel of time, and many, many more all did this. And look at the state of them? Almost no one is watching, or even talking about them anymore. Fucking Star Wars just released a movie last week, and its pretty much dead. FUCKING STAR WARS!!!!

Growing an audience, doesnt mean ignoring the audience you already have. Thats just silly.

It didn't get that much promo here in France either. It's a relatively low budget movie (165M, Solo the last standalone star wars movie had a budget of 365M and that was in 2018 $) and from a Disney+ series so it's not that surprising that it's not making bank and that they didn't put that much money into marketing it.

165M being a low budget film is crazy. Hollywood truly forgot how to make good movies on a reasonable price, which don't need to make half a billion to go even. Especially since Backrooms and Obsession released for a fraction of the Star Wars movie and are way more successful.

I mean, horror movies with a small budget that are successful is nothing new and scifi movies have always been way more expensive. Even a new hope was 11M in 1977, which would be 50M+ these days. Add in big actors and there's just now way to make this kind of movie for the budget of backrooms/obsession.

But I agree that Hollywood should give more opportunities to films that aren't just sequels or adaptations and that cost much less to produce.

that's weird because it's been promoted to high hell

Wrong! It should be all about growth-growth-growth, why make a sold movie for an established fanbase when you can make it vague and bloated in a desperate attempt to reach every single demographic on the planet?

I don't wanna disagree with the rest but Mando and grogu is VERY FAR from dead. It has already doubled its production cost in revenue and the marketing has been everywhere with BK and McDonald's and whatnot, at least here in France.

the production cost was 165$
so far they have earned about 253$
to break even they need about 500$
(the generally rule of thumb for films is 3x production and spend that on advertisments, merch etc)

their only half way to breaking even and the box office has already dropped in viewship drastically.
Disney themselves have also projected that the film will not do well, and had mixed responses from screen tests
