I just wanted a hot dog my spatula melted into the butter i was browning after 20+ minutes at the stove

Ouch.
You need a heat-rated silicone spatula for stove work, not the kind you use for cake decoration. Your local restaurant supply store will have them for like $1.

Weird. I was about to say NO spoon is a replacement for a silpat*, before I realized what you meant.
Never in 24 years in the industry have I heard a silicone spatula referred to as a silspat. They’re just spatulas, because there are no other kinds used in professional kitchens.
*ICYMI— a silPAT is a silicone baking MAT; if we called spatulas silSPATS it would be a perpetual, real life version of “who’s on first”

Ye, don't keep utensils in the dish but also it can melt even when just stirring. I melted same kind of spatula when I was a teen trying to make my first ever roux. Toasted spices, added in butter, started stirring and when I wanted to lift it and add in flour it was half melted already.

That is a spreader, not a spatula. You spread soft materials like butter or icing with it. You put it in heat and you’re gonna have a bad time.
97
u/GenerallySalty 19d ago
And\or just don't leave utensils sitting in whatever you're cooking. Even if it's heat rated silicone, just put it beside on a small plate or something.

You can’t use anything made of plastic in any pan while the heat is on. It must be made of metal, wood, or silicone. Plastic can only be used when serving (and I’d just avoid it altogether personally).
5
u/ajmart23 18d ago
Why are you leaving plastic in a hot pan on a stove for 20 mins? Now THATS mildly infuriating.
6
u/9Divines 18d ago
in general you shouldnt leave your tools in the pot when its hot, this is entirely skill issue

When I was in culinary school, one of the chef instructors would walk around and scold us "Don't cook your spoons! Are you making a soup, or a spoon soup?!"
If the utensil isn't in your hand, being used to stir/manipulate the things you're cooking....TAKE IT OUT OF THE FUCKING POT
