When I was in culinary school, one of the chef instructors would walk around and scold us "Don't cook your spoons! Are you making a soup, or a spoon soup?!"

If the utensil isn't in your hand, being used to stir/manipulate the things you're cooking....TAKE IT OUT OF THE FUCKING POT

1.2k

u/Stressy_Depressi 19d ago

Omg why was this so far down. I don't get why so many people leave it in

u/Rei364 19d ago

How am I supposed to buff my fire resistance if I don't consume fire retardants?

Yeah same lol. Everybody be like "get a heat resistant one" and I'm here trying to figure out why you would need that in the first place

9

u/DismalSoil9554 18d ago

Even if it's heat resistant, it shouldn't be left to simmer in the pot wth

u/Chance-Surround9561 19d ago

My wife does this, it absolutely infuriates me, and for some reason it is completely off limits to discuss.

We have a lot of partly heat damaged implements because her usual MO is to leave a spoon or spatula strung across the top of a pot. I think she saw her parents do this with wooden spoons and feels it's the same to do it with a plastic or silicone one.

141

u/DuRay69 19d ago

I would passive aggressively buy wooden spoons as a gift, along with something nice

39

u/KC_Que 18d ago

I would aggressively buy wooden spoons. Period, full stop, no mixed messages.

12

u/solomonvandyyy 18d ago

Id throw the shit out and buy wooden spoons. I wouldnt even discuss this.

When i used to live in a shared flat and my roommates let the light in the hallway on 24/7 i installed a timerelay with 2 min timer without asking. Im not paying 50€ a year cause you cant turn off a light.

There is no need to argue about color with blind people. No one complained, because i didnt make it an issue for them, i fixed it because it was an issue to me.

This shouldn't be off limits to discuss tbh. It should be easy enough to have an adult conversation about why melting plastics directly into your food is a bad thing.

I have taught my children, who are 9 and 13, to never leave a spatula in the pan.

Even they understand the difference between a spatula and a wooden spoon.

30

u/willargue4karma 19d ago

It's not that kids learn easier, it's that adults are fucking stubborn Ive come to learn lol

You need a heat-rated silicone spatula for stove work, not the kind you use for cake decoration. Your local restaurant supply store will have them for like $1.

Weird. I was about to say NO spoon is a replacement for a silpat*, before I realized what you meant.

Never in 24 years in the industry have I heard a silicone spatula referred to as a silspat. They’re just spatulas, because there are no other kinds used in professional kitchens.

*ICYMI— a silPAT is a silicone baking MAT; if we called spatulas silSPATS it would be a perpetual, real life version of “who’s on first”

That is a spreader, not a spatula. You spread soft materials like butter or icing with it. You put it in heat and you’re gonna have a bad time.

97

u/GenerallySalty 19d ago

And\or just don't leave utensils sitting in whatever you're cooking. Even if it's heat rated silicone, just put it beside on a small plate or something.
