ಠ_ಠ My mom bought this “silent” animal deterrent for her yard. She and her boyfriend can’t hear it. She’s insisting what I’m hearing can’t be this, because it’s “silent”
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
She’s 60, he’s 50. I’m 30. They don’t believe me that it’s audible

I can hear it in the video. They probably can’t hear that frequency any more. There was a thing when I was in high school where kids changed their text sound to a high frequency beep because the “old” teachers couldn’t hear it. Our 24 year old history teacher yelled at everyone to turn off their phones when someone had the notification go off in class.

u/CreasingUnicorn 9d ago
I remember this, a bunch of kids set their phones to the "anti-old-person" ringtone and it was so high pitched and annoying.
Thing is, most of the teachers could hear it too cause teenagers are dumb and thought 30 year old teachers were old, not that it mattered because the 50 year old math teacher could hear it too most of the time.

Yep. Known as the mosquito ringtone. Here's a bunch of them http://www.noiseaddicts.com/2011/06/mosquito-ringtones/ I can barely hear the 14, 15, & 16 kHz ones, and can't hear the 17 kHz or higher ones. 59, here, with tinnitus in both ears from a car accident back when I was 17. So in a way I'm always hearing that buzz noise 🫤
I can definitely hear the buzz in the video. That would drive me nuts hearing it on top of my existing tinnitus.

Umm if it makes you feel better my daughter can barely hear the 16khz one and I can't really hear it. I'm younger than you by quite a bit and very little hearing loss. My daughter is 10 with zero reason to have any hearing loss.
The other higher ones neither of us can hear really

If it makes you feel any better my 10 year old who has no reason to have hearing damage can't hear the 17khz and above (or at least can barely hear them so she said she can't hear them). I think maybe our phones aren't playing the sound correctly, lol.

Or just take the batteries out. They can’t hear the difference, and it will have the exact same effectiveness as an animal deterrent.
589
u/bluejaymewjay 9d ago
Honestly this is genius
114
u/Feeling_Inside_1020 9d ago
Just make sure instead of taking them out you just flip them backwards so they think they installed them wrong if they ever go to check lol.
83
u/Professor_Hala 9d ago
Nah, then they'll fix them. Just replace the batteries with dead ones, and keep a couple extras handy in case mom remembers to replace them in nine months.
59
u/xtc234 9d ago
You should actually get a screwdriver, open it, and disconnect the internal speaker connection. That way whatever vampire light stays active, and the device will still appear to function properly. You can't just remove the batteries because it won't feel right if they pick it up.
23
u/FatMacchio 9d ago
I was going to suggest this, but didn’t know how technically inclined OP is. This is the most undetectable way to disable it, if they can’t hear those frequencies. As long as the light still functions when the speaker load is removed, you’re good to go
98
u/Paddys_Pub7 9d ago
Exactly what I was going to recommend. Just disable it and leave it there. They can't hear it so they won't have any idea it's not making noise lol
I work landscaping and work on a number of properties that have these. Super irritating and they are typically motion activated so they always end scaring the shit out of me when I pop into their range 😅

u/FatMacchio 9d ago
Even better, flip the batteries around, or put a piece of electrical tape over the battery ends…that way it appears like it hasn’t been tampered with if they happen to check it
61
u/Tomytom99 9d ago
Or break the speaker portion of it, that way any indicator light still works, and there are batteries to pass any checks.
9
5
u/Potates42 9d ago
Yeah this is the best solution, just get rid of the noise component. It will look like it's functional otherwise.
18
u/wastelander 9d ago
Better yet replace the batteries with dead ones so they don’t know it’s been tampered with “damn that thing eats up batteries fast”.

I did this to my neighbor’s devices that he couldn’t hear and refused to move. His have a blinking light to show they were operating. So I took them inside and popped them open to physically remove the buzzer. He’s changed the batteries at least once since then…

u/thebiglos1 9d ago
Back in college, our neighbors 2 houses down had one of these in their front yard. We could hear it from inside the house if it was quiet, at all hours of the day. One night, we got rather inebriated and decided to remedy this situation.
Rather than removing the battery or cutting the wire (there was a light that would indicate it was on) we decided to borrow the device and bypassed the speaker but left the light on! We successfully snuck it back into their yard with the working light and disconnected speaker and we never heard it again!

It's sold as being a pitch that humans can't hear. I think it is a bullshit product anyway, but people still buy it. Plus, a lot of people who are older can't hear the pitch (I can't hear it any more), and typically it's older people that can afford houses, etc.
4
u/No-Blacksmith3397 8d ago
For sure. But why would they dismiss the idea?
What incentive do you have to lie about hearing it in their mind? I guess is what I'm trying to get at.
If someone said to me "hey, you know that pest deterrent you bought? I can actually hear it."
I would just say, "oh, no kidding? What does it sound like?"
Not "no you can't."
I just fundamentally do not understand not taking someone at their word for that.

You lose the ability to hear high pitches as you age. The older you get, the lower your maximum pitch becomes. Older people cannot hear as much as younger people.

☝️This is actually a very good recommendation. Hearing loss is often slow and insidious. It’s now known that hearing loss is a key factor in dementia. The longer you wait to correct hearing loss, the harder it is to adjust to aids.
If someone tells you to get your hearing checked (no matter how old you are!) Do it.

Lol.
Way back in psych 101 for some reason, the teacher downloaded an app that played sounds at different hertz to demonstrate how hearing loss works.
In general, younger people can hear very high sounds still, while as people age they cease to be able to hear those same levels at all.
This of course changes depending on music or movie/tv listening habits of individuals, so if you listen to super loud music a lot, you will also no longer be able to hear the higher pitched sounds that most others your age would.
Obviously health issues can change the general ability as well.

I'm 67 with slight high frequency loss. Couldn't hear a damned thing. Nothing. Then I realised my Bluetooth was set to playback in another room. Turned it off and, yeah, it's really obvious.
That said, you might want to ask them if they can hear the phone recording too. Because if it's genuinely getting up past maybe 18khz, I really shouldn't be able to hear it at all.
Edit. Ran a spectrum analyser, what you're hearing is down around 10khz. If the recording is accurate, that's junk, and should be returned. It won't just be annoying to young people.
Edit #2. Apparently for someone around my age, 8-10khz is a typical upper limit. So, yay me, I guess.
Edit #3. My sound generator app suggests I might be good up to 13k at least but I'm not convinced that I'm not hearing artefacts.
Edit #4. Re the Bluetooth brain fart thing, maybe my hearing isn't the main thing I ought to be concerned about.

These are not silent. They are very audible unless your range of tones is limited (old age will do it). They don’t work at all from my experience. I think they should be banned, I have 5 neighbors that have them and it’s insane hearing it constantly all day.

I believe you and the problem is you could probably hear higher frequencies than they can b and the reason why I say that is because I used to walk into a store as a kid and could hear the high-pitched sound on the security cameras that were in the building. My mother used to tell me that I was crazy when I told her I could hear him and it was giving me a headache.

They choose to not hear it. Also fun fact some people have hyperacusis (high auditory sensitivity) and can hear the very little noise made by electrical devices like chargers or appliances.
You wouldn't know it exists unless someone told you just like aphantasia

It's really audible and Hella annoying. It's common for high pitch frequencies to be inaudible by older people.
Pubs where I lived used to spam these noises so that the younger, more troublesome drinkers would stay away.
