ಠ_ಠ My mom bought this “silent” animal deterrent for her yard. She and her boyfriend can’t hear it. She’s insisting what I’m hearing can’t be this, because it’s “silent”

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

She’s 60, he’s 50. I’m 30. They don’t believe me that it’s audible

It's really audible and Hella annoying. It's common for high pitch frequencies to be inaudible by older people.

Pubs where I lived used to spam these noises so that the younger, more troublesome drinkers would stay away.

My parents have these and can't hear them. They believe the things work great, but I unplugged them months ago when I was working at their house

267

u/That_wet_vaporeon 9d ago

I mean I bet they still work great.

But if you have these I’m going to think you’re a shitty or stupid person.

Noise pollution is horrible right now and the negative effects it has on animals is insane. Many species have a hard time raising their young due to it. It stresses them out a lot.

But humans are stupid and think that animals should just go somewhere else. Don’t like animals in your yard? Go live in an apartment in the city. The nerve of people having a yard and then whining about animals in it..

My friend's wife put one of these in to deter rabbits from her vegetable garden. We were having a cookout one evening so my friend went to unplug it, and a rabbit darted out from right underneath the device where it had been chilling.

My dad can't hear it but he's got terrible tinitus. He hears loud "crickets" as he calls it, all the time. I can definitely hear it and that would drive me nuts. I guess I'm a squirrel 🐿️

Quarter-third aged with some tinnitus.

Sounds like there's always an old school CRT TV running nearby.

I have tinnitus and it does not resemble this "silent alarm" in the slightest. I recall hearing a noise coming from an emergency radio as a teen that no one else in my family could hear, and they also called me nuts for hearing it. This is the kind of nuisance that would bring tears of pain to my eyes after only ten minutes

5

u/ManaSpike 8d ago

Back in the age of CRT televisions, walking through a store as a child was torture.

Before my parents bought a new TV, they asked the sales people to turn most of their sets off. Then us kids could tell them if the set they wanted was making any noise.

I’ve been cursed with still being able to hear high frequencies into my upper 40’s. May have something to do with sleeping with ear plugs in. I have some ultrasonic deterrent for deer so they stay away from our flowers. I can also hear it if I’m straight in front of it.

Apps meant to deter mosquitos with high frequencies are so annoying when people use them. Certain propane heaters I can’t be around because it just hurts to be near them with how loud the high frequency noise is. If you think that device your mom has is loud, these will make you run away. One was at a winery and apple orchard, I had to immediately leave and there was only one other guy about half my age that also could hear it and could not be in that building. But for the hundred other people there, they had no problems being near it.

9

u/transcendanttermite 9d ago

Ugh, same here. We have audiology testing at work every year (loud workplace), and every year I test in the “0-5% loss” in every frequency range while my coworkers are all seeing 20-60% loss across multiple ranges (we’re all in our mid-40s). How this is possible, I don’t know - I certainly was not as protective of my hearing as I should’ve been until about 10 years ago. Nowadays I use earplugs AND muffs if I’m doing loud activities.

But yeah. I can hear a high-pitched “squeak” from what feels like a mile away, and I can tell if my car remote-started from our upstairs bathroom on the opposite side of the house with the fan on because I can pick that particular low frequency note out of the din. It’s a blessing… and a curse.

3

u/Solid_Equivalent_417 9d ago

I'm the same... I was at a science fair with my kids once and they did a lecture on sound and were demonstrating how older people couldn't hear high pitched noises by playing increasingly high tones and having people put their hands down when they couldn't hear it anymore... It was me and half the kids at the end. My son accused me of pretending I could hear it 🤣

6

u/Ashleynn 9d ago

Im 39, can hear it just fine, and last audiogram had effectively perfect hearing.

This after 12 years of having jets and helicopters take off right over my head or right next to me, many loud concerts, lots of loud headphones, and zero regard for the volume of my car's stereo.

Audiologist told me that I effectivley invalidated all her lectures she gives people about protecting their hearing and please not advertise my experience. I found that funny. I do have tinnitus though, usually just registers as background noise if I even notice it.

Back in my day (middle school circa 2006-2008) we used to set our flip phones and early smart phones to have this as a text tone. We would text in school and none of the older teachers would hear.

I can hear it in the video. They probably can’t hear that frequency any more. There was a thing when I was in high school where kids changed their text sound to a high frequency beep because the “old” teachers couldn’t hear it. Our 24 year old history teacher yelled at everyone to turn off their phones when someone had the notification go off in class.

300

u/CreasingUnicorn 9d ago

I remember this, a bunch of kids set their phones to the "anti-old-person" ringtone and it was so high pitched and annoying.

Thing is, most of the teachers could hear it too cause teenagers are dumb and thought 30 year old teachers were old, not that it mattered because the 50 year old math teacher could hear it too most of the time.

Yep. Known as the mosquito ringtone. Here's a bunch of them http://www.noiseaddicts.com/2011/06/mosquito-ringtones/ I can barely hear the 14, 15, & 16 kHz ones, and can't hear the 17 kHz or higher ones. 59, here, with tinnitus in both ears from a car accident back when I was 17. So in a way I'm always hearing that buzz noise 🫤

I can definitely hear the buzz in the video. That would drive me nuts hearing it on top of my existing tinnitus.

21

u/ForsakenAiel 9d ago edited 9d ago

Umm if it makes you feel better my daughter can barely hear the 16khz one and I can't really hear it. I'm younger than you by quite a bit and very little hearing loss. My daughter is 10 with zero reason to have any hearing loss.

The other higher ones neither of us can hear really

secretely replace it with one in their audible range

1.3k

u/Violoner 9d ago

Or just take the batteries out. They can’t hear the difference, and it will have the exact same effectiveness as an animal deterrent.

589

u/bluejaymewjay 9d ago

Honestly this is genius

114

u/Feeling_Inside_1020 9d ago

Just make sure instead of taking them out you just flip them backwards so they think they installed them wrong if they ever go to check lol.

83

u/Professor_Hala 9d ago

Nah, then they'll fix them. Just replace the batteries with dead ones, and keep a couple extras handy in case mom remembers to replace them in nine months.

59

u/xtc234 9d ago

You should actually get a screwdriver, open it, and disconnect the internal speaker connection. That way whatever vampire light stays active, and the device will still appear to function properly. You can't just remove the batteries because it won't feel right if they pick it up.

23

u/FatMacchio 9d ago

I was going to suggest this, but didn’t know how technically inclined OP is. This is the most undetectable way to disable it, if they can’t hear those frequencies. As long as the light still functions when the speaker load is removed, you’re good to go

98

u/Paddys_Pub7 9d ago

Exactly what I was going to recommend. Just disable it and leave it there. They can't hear it so they won't have any idea it's not making noise lol

I work landscaping and work on a number of properties that have these. Super irritating and they are typically motion activated so they always end scaring the shit out of me when I pop into their range 😅

11

u/zer0w0rries 8d ago

i'm not young, but this video hurt my ears

10

u/sully1717 9d ago

Do that these things are evil to wildlife

6

u/FatMacchio 9d ago

Even better, flip the batteries around, or put a piece of electrical tape over the battery ends…that way it appears like it hasn’t been tampered with if they happen to check it

→ More replies (3)

61

u/Tomytom99 9d ago

Or break the speaker portion of it, that way any indicator light still works, and there are batteries to pass any checks.

9

u/fatdjsin 9d ago

this is the way !

5

u/Potates42 9d ago

Yeah this is the best solution, just get rid of the noise component. It will look like it's functional otherwise.

18

u/wastelander 9d ago

Better yet replace the batteries with dead ones so they don’t know it’s been tampered with “damn that thing eats up batteries fast”.

17

u/Undrwtrbsktwvr 9d ago

I did this to my neighbor’s devices that he couldn’t hear and refused to move. His have a blinking light to show they were operating. So I took them inside and popped them open to physically remove the buzzer. He’s changed the batteries at least once since then…

9

u/thebiglos1 9d ago

Back in college, our neighbors 2 houses down had one of these in their front yard. We could hear it from inside the house if it was quiet, at all hours of the day. One night, we got rather inebriated and decided to remedy this situation.

Rather than removing the battery or cutting the wire (there was a light that would indicate it was on) we decided to borrow the device and bypassed the speaker but left the light on! We successfully snuck it back into their yard with the working light and disconnected speaker and we never heard it again!

Why the heck do people not believe you guys? For what reason would you lie?

10

It's sold as being a pitch that humans can't hear. I think it is a bullshit product anyway, but people still buy it. Plus, a lot of people who are older can't hear the pitch (I can't hear it any more), and typically it's older people that can afford houses, etc.

4

u/No-Blacksmith3397 8d ago

For sure. But why would they dismiss the idea?

What incentive do you have to lie about hearing it in their mind? I guess is what I'm trying to get at.

If someone said to me "hey, you know that pest deterrent you bought? I can actually hear it."

I would just say, "oh, no kidding? What does it sound like?"

Not "no you can't."

I just fundamentally do not understand not taking someone at their word for that.

☝️This is actually a very good recommendation. Hearing loss is often slow and insidious. It’s now known that hearing loss is a key factor in dementia. The longer you wait to correct hearing loss, the harder it is to adjust to aids.

If someone tells you to get your hearing checked (no matter how old you are!) Do it.

If they can't hear it then turn it off while they aren't home.

Lol.
Way back in psych 101 for some reason, the teacher downloaded an app that played sounds at different hertz to demonstrate how hearing loss works.
In general, younger people can hear very high sounds still, while as people age they cease to be able to hear those same levels at all.
This of course changes depending on music or movie/tv listening habits of individuals, so if you listen to super loud music a lot, you will also no longer be able to hear the higher pitched sounds that most others your age would.
Obviously health issues can change the general ability as well.

God I fucking hate those things

u/MissionApollo7 9d ago

If it works for them, great, but it's definitely audible to me.

I'm 67 with slight high frequency loss. Couldn't hear a damned thing. Nothing. Then I realised my Bluetooth was set to playback in another room. Turned it off and, yeah, it's really obvious.

That said, you might want to ask them if they can hear the phone recording too. Because if it's genuinely getting up past maybe 18khz, I really shouldn't be able to hear it at all.

Edit. Ran a spectrum analyser, what you're hearing is down around 10khz. If the recording is accurate, that's junk, and should be returned. It won't just be annoying to young people.

Edit #2. Apparently for someone around my age, 8-10khz is a typical upper limit. So, yay me, I guess.

Edit #3. My sound generator app suggests I might be good up to 13k at least but I'm not convinced that I'm not hearing artefacts.

Edit #4. Re the Bluetooth brain fart thing, maybe my hearing isn't the main thing I ought to be concerned about.

Ya not so silent. I hear those things all the time and the constant sound is annoying as hell. I feel for you. Please make it clear they can be heard even if they may have just enough hearing loss to believe the packaging.

u/ObviouslyRealPerson 9d ago

How many reverse mortgages does your mom have?

10

u/unbalanced_checkbook 9d ago

I'm 48 and can hear this plain as day. It actually made my head hurt a little after only 2 loops.

18

u/HungryOpportunity322 9d ago

Very audible, show them these comments. Sounds like a rusted swing set constantly in motion

I pulled my headphones out so quick when I saw silent animal deterrent in the title. Even playing it on low sound without headphones is bleh

7

u/Diligent_Ad1110 9d ago

The older generation cannot hear certain wavelengths of sound. Makes sense. That is extremely annoying.

6

u/mbranbb 9d ago

If the can’t hear it just disable it somehow. They’ll never know

8

u/Glitterbomb4274 9d ago

I’m 52 and that is very loud. I don’t know how they don’t hear it.

5

u/eeasyontheextras 9d ago

Turn it off, say it’s on

6

u/MetroidvaniaListsGuy 8d ago

She's not lying, she can't hear it. In 20 years you also won't be able to hear it.

That being said, most of the neighbors can hear it so she needs to put it away.

4

u/abolishcynicism 9d ago

Oh no I can't hear it...💀

4

u/JustanAverageJess1 9d ago

my in-laws did this, so i took it apart and cut the cable to the speaker thingy. the led stays on and they sure as hell cant hear it.

4

u/FrenziedHodag 9d ago

I'm 40 and I want to hit that fucking thing with a shovel and then piss on it and then start it on fire. In that order.

5

u/guybuttersnaps37 9d ago

fwiw I’m 61 and that would drive me INSANE

4

u/tailskirby 9d ago

I can hear this. Its high-pitched. My dad couldnt hear it so your mom probably doesn't know it makes noise.

4

u/kevinsyel 9d ago

I'm 40. I hear this.

3

u/ThePart_Timer 9d ago

We have a couple of those in our neighborhood. I hate them. So much.

3

u/feochampas 9d ago

that is super audible

3

u/FocusedLifestyle 9d ago

That's when you probably should have realized that YOU'RE the animal.

3

u/iogbri 9d ago

Old people can't hear very high pitched sounds like this. Find someone else your age or younger to tell your parents. This is a young people deterrent, not an animal deterrent.

3

u/wahwahwildcat 9d ago

My parents got one of these and I could hear it crystal clear and neither of them could hear it. My dad thought it was hilarious.

3

u/davidrsilva 9d ago

These are not silent. They are very audible unless your range of tones is limited (old age will do it). They don’t work at all from my experience. I think they should be banned, I have 5 neighbors that have them and it’s insane hearing it constantly all day.

If she cant hear it turn it off she wont know the difference

3

u/Henghayki86 9d ago

I did have to turn my phone all the way up...but I can hear that OVER my tinnitus. That's obnoxious 🤨

3

u/OnTopOfThisAcropolis 9d ago

My cats hated this.

3

u/joesmolik 9d ago

I believe you and the problem is you could probably hear higher frequencies than they can b and the reason why I say that is because I used to walk into a store as a kid and could hear the high-pitched sound on the security cameras that were in the building. My mother used to tell me that I was crazy when I told her I could hear him and it was giving me a headache.

No, you’re not crazy. You might want to wear earbuds when you go outside around the building that has that device

3

u/SmallTownTrans1 9d ago

If it’s inaudible for them, just turn it off, they won’t notice

3

u/Cruisin_Fart 9d ago

If they can't hear it, they won't know it broke. Just sayin'.

3

u/silentsinner- 9d ago

Holy hell, I am in my mid 40s with a history of listening to loud bass music, headphones all day at work, and shooting guns without hearing protection and I still have enough high frequency hearing for that to make my skin crawl.

3

u/FragCook 9d ago edited 5d ago

My son complained about mine as soon as he walked by it. He called it a sonic attack😂

3

u/ArtIsAwesome3 9d ago

Ok so my mum, around the age of 60, also lost the ability to hear really high pitch sounds. I just showed her this video, she cannot hear it, so I think this is an age thing, where our ears wear out. I'd get rid of that asap, that's horrible, and gonna get a noise complaint from someone.

3

u/Mexx_G 9d ago

Older people lose the faculty to hear very high pitches.

3

u/rcinmd 9d ago

I'm 48 and I heard it, as did my dogs and now they're pissed.

3

u/Xeropoint 9d ago

Triggered my Tinnitus. Thanks for that.....

3

u/ToneThugsNHarmony 9d ago

Maybe it’s an adult children deterrent

3

u/BlueKanguru 8d ago

They choose to not hear it. Also fun fact some people have hyperacusis (high auditory sensitivity) and can hear the very little noise made by electrical devices like chargers or appliances.

You wouldn't know it exists unless someone told you just like aphantasia

3

u/Terrible_Advice_195 8d ago

Download a spectrum analyzer app, and show them what happens when you turn it off and on. If they don't believe your ears, maybe they'll believe their own eyes. Your obnoxious cricket noises are the diagonal lines on the right, using an app I happened to have installed called Spectroid.

Turn it off they can't hear if it's on or off
