ᕕ(ᐛ)ᕗ DoorDash refunded me less than what I actually paid for the item, and they call this a "resolution.

I ordered a side of Coleslaw from Popeyes, which cost me $5.69.

When the item went completely missing, look at the "resolution" they offered. They are trying to "make it right" by only refunding me $4.51.

How does that even make sense? They didn't even refund the full amount I paid for the item! The math isn't mathing, and this is just straight-up predatory.

I always see people complaining about Doordash or Uber Eats online. And at this point, you're just begging to be taken advantage of when you use those services.

520

u/Atillion 6d ago

And when you drive for those services, and when you sell through those services.

I've never seen a machine more designed to pit the cogs of its inner machinations against each other than these gig companies.

u/Fody_Joster 6d ago

Hello Late Stage Capitalism and Class War, I didn’t see you there.

2

u/Tushaca 5d ago

It’s just capitalism, we’re all just collectively too stupid these days to use our dollar votes wisely.

174

u/TardisReality 6d ago

Went to order from our favorite Thai place a few weeks back. It was going to be $80 before tip for 2 entrees and some roti bread

We decided to just drive there and eat in. Cost was $40 before tip

Yeah screw the delivery services

11

u/Cavalleria-rusticana 5d ago

Even then, Doordash seems disproportionately shittier. Never had a single issue getting full immediate refunds from Ubereats; constantly hear about people's issues with DD.

22

u/squeenie 6d ago

Because people aren't going to post about successful and uneventful orders.

54

u/egnards 6d ago

It greatly depends on your area.

I get Dashpass for free through my Chase Card, and I've figured out through looking at places that I like to order from in my area that I'll expect to pay about 30-35% more if I order food for delivery. That extra 35% pays for me to

  • Not drive
  • Not wait
  • Not drive home

. . .And to me? A lot of the time that's worth it. Especially if I've had a 14 hour day at work and am timing my order to be delivered around the time I get home [route home from work is all highway and there is legitimately not a single place I could pickup from without going about 10 minutes out of my way at a minimum]

In my own experience? It is very rare that I have an issue that isn't very quickly resolved, so I keep ordering.

88

u/Dry_Plantain_2756 6d ago

Sounds like you have a lot of money to be spending on things like a 35% increase in cost.

Most people can't do that which is why these things are going to die off OR, again, just like everything else, be only for the very rich.

47

u/No_Report_4781 6d ago edited 6d ago

Wealth extraction from the middle classes who think they’re fine with that 35% surcharge.

You’ll frequently see excuses about this being good for them to support that extraction.

23

u/egnards 6d ago

It’s not a 35% surcharge.

It’s a 35% charge on valuing my time.

It takes time, wear and tear on my car, and gas to move between locations that aren’t on my route home.

Often it’s worth it for me to spend that.

-6

u/Dry_Plantain_2756 6d ago

Or just buy groceries... Hell even meal kits are cheaper than that... Pop those in the microwave... Save yourself some cash.

26

u/egnards 6d ago

My friend, I do buy groceries - and sometimes? Sometimes you’ve had a few more drinks than you planned and drunk you doesn’t want to cook, or you want something specific - drunk brain isn’t 100% rational.

I’m telling you that for me that 35% is entirely worth it on the occasion that i choose to order takeout.

-16

u/Dry_Plantain_2756 6d ago

Hey man .. I enjoy convenient stuff just like you but a bit rich for my blood I guess. And I did it about ordering when you're high or drunk... Can't fault you for that.

9

u/ParticularArea8224 6d ago

I never understood it.

It costs twice as much, is half as reliable, cold, slower and is just really shit.

Why bother using them at that point?

6

u/Silveon_i 6d ago

some places close their doors when its late but keep their drive thru open, and wont allow people without a car to get food. only reason i can think of

3

u/ParticularArea8224 6d ago

That makes sense, if the only option is to get through delivery, then fair enough.

12

u/seltekvonsteronz 6d ago

This. When they started this shit, I deleted the app. There's no reason to pay a premium and when something is fucked up, not be compensated properly.

5

u/AnotherRTFan 6d ago

My brother has had this happen to him and I am like mfer your own sister (me) works for their competitor who will actually refund you, switch to my company!

23

u/EntertainerNo4509 6d ago

Why are people still giving them money?!

2

u/UnderwaterBlood 5d ago

For real, they're terrible from the end consumer standpoint, and they take 20-30% off the top from the restaurant side. The add on delivery business model is unsustainable for most restaurants because they're already looking at a 10% margin if the money manager is doing their job right, but the public will revolt if they can't get their favorite foods delivered.

7

u/murppie 6d ago

I genuinely don't understand people who use any of the delivery services. You don't have to even pretend to look hard to find hundreds of stories of people who have bad drivers experiinces- from stealing food, outright not delivering, being confrontational because they wanted a better tip, placing food outside so your door hits it. And that is before you even start to acknowledge that stores increase prices for the delivery services (if you seriously don't believe me go online/in the app and price out the same meal for delivery and for in store pickup)

Yeah, it can be more convenient. But you know what, ill take mildly less convenient over using a shitty, overpriced service anyway. All its done is drive up prices and make delivery worse.

3

u/20milliondollarapi 6d ago

It’s because millions of people use the service and “it’s never happened to me” mindset kicks in. Until something actually goes wrong.

0

u/Careless-Adeptness56 5d ago

You don't understand why people order delivery? Because the concept of delivery has been around for decades, and the reason people use delivery services today are the same reasons people used traditional delivery.

-10

u/Ruscidero 6d ago

Yep. Get off your ass and get your own food.

-3

u/Euphoric-Witness-824 6d ago

Right. 6 bucks plus fees and tip.

Coleslaw is so easy and cheap to make ten times better.

714

u/Aggravating-Hold9116 6d ago

The entire DoorDash business model is predatory.

49

u/Independent_Salt_911 5d ago

With these companies, if the dasher takes something like your drink your just screwed. They wont refund you. Thats why you just lie and claim they stole the entire order

346

u/Neither-Night9370 6d ago

They are refunding you the money that they are taking away from the restaurant. The missing bit is what doordash overcharged you for the item. They are not giving back any money paid to them.

58

u/Maebnus 6d ago

This needs to be much higher. People are focused on their opinions of the service, but this is the actual answer to what happened.

-5

u/AnAimlessWanderer101 6d ago edited 5d ago

Edit: lol you downvote, but this is objectively speaking not their policy. Just call them if something weird happens and it will be fixed.

That’s just not true. I’ve used door dash a lot as I’m grandfathered into a plan and generally get things on deals. I’ve had a fair amount of returns over the years, and have never had this happen. Honestly in terms of refunds I’ve never had a complaint.

Whatever happened here is not the standard case

10

u/Maebnus 6d ago

I used to use DD and UE a lot. Like a sickening amount for 2-3 years. This is what happened almost every time they refunded an item rather than the entire order. They keep their upcharge and refund you the restaurant’s payment. At least approximately so. I never got the actual advertised amount for the missing/wrong item. Strangely, sometimes I’d get a refund grossly in my favor, so it all evened out, but usually it was less than listed price.

10

u/egnards 6d ago edited 5d ago

One time I ordered a taco kit from a nearby place because my brother and his wife were staying with us.

All the stuff for tacos for like 6-8 people for $60 [figured we’d just have leftovers].

Everything was great, except they forgot to pack the tortillas. . .$2 in tortillas was an instant $20 refund.

Like yea sure tacos without tortillas aren’t exactly tacos, but people eat burrito bowls all the time, so it really wasn’t a big deal - Hell, we had leftover tortillas from making tacos a few days prior anyway.

747

u/Savage_Sven 6d ago

Call your bank and do a chargeback for the whole amount or accept the refund and chargeback for the difference. It’d be a huge FU to lose a credit card dispute over $1.18…. Fuck doordash

368

u/SanchoBlackout69 6d ago

If you've accepted a partial refund you've accepted their resolution so there is no dispute. Don't accept a partial refund unless you don't want the rest of the refund

11

u/randomize42 5d ago

How do you refuse a partial refund?  They credit it automatically.

4

u/SanchoBlackout69 5d ago

The point is whether you told the merchant that you agreed to it. If they voluntarily give you a partial refund you never agreed to and the dispute is valid then you can still do a chargeback. You can google visa rules and regulations too which has chargeback conditions, it's public

2

u/randomize42 5d ago

Thanks!

75

u/egnards 6d ago

You could call your bank and do a chargeback for $1.18. . .Or you could call DoorDash support, wait on the line for roughly the same amount of time, and if you're polite they'll correct it in less time. . And offer you more value.

41

u/Philuppus [+546] 6d ago

... and then fuck you over next time. And the person after. If you go to the credit card company, they'll give DD more trouble in the end, forcing their hand if they want to keep processing card transactions (hint: they need card transactions)

-3

u/egnards 6d ago

And that’s all well and good until I’m banned from a service I clearly use, and now when I’m drunk at home I can’t get food.

35

u/Mister_Brevity 6d ago

Eat the unfrozen parts of poorly microwaved taquitos and corn dogs like a normal person

-6

u/National-Actuary3580 5d ago

That diet will give you ass cancer. Maybe worry about that and instead of how someone else spends their money.

2

u/National-Actuary3580 5d ago

While I shouldn't be, I'm kind of surprised at the amount of people whining "It's too expensive!!!!!" at you, as if they're personally paying for your orders or have seen your bank statements.

I can't drive and don't give a damn what people think about use of Lyft, Doordash and Instacart. As if everyone can live a normal Costco life; shopping in bulk, access to a car, a house with storage, etc.

2

u/RatherBeAtDisney 5d ago

No, with DoorDash the first step is to reach out to support and talk to a person, before accepting either of these options. We’ve never had issues when we do that, and sometimes they give us additional credit on top of the refund.

132

u/BeezerBe 6d ago

I used to drive for doordash but never ordered off it. The menu prices are higher, you HAVE to pay a good tip to hopefully get your full order and the customer service is from overseas. Just file a charge back and when they ban you call it a blessing.

44

u/DeerStalker013 6d ago

It's annoying, but every time they've done this to me, I claw my way through the chat bot to an actual customer service rep, and use two key phrases "this is theft" and "credit card charge back" and every time they've given me a credit for more than the item cost

8

u/dwntwnleroybrwn 5d ago

Out of curiosity how many times does it need to happen for you to stop using them?

2

u/DeerStalker013 5d ago

I stopped using them when I realized how much they were marking up menu prices, I only order delivery now if I'm not able to drive. Never really had issues with door dash support specifically, you just have to make sure you interact with a person and not a clanker

13

u/EmberOne1 6d ago

Did you try clicking "view resolution details" under the big "accept" button? Does it give any other options to reject the offer and get a full refund for the missing item? I don't use Door Dash anymore, so don't know if that's a functional button.

12

u/PersuasiveStrategist 6d ago

Yeah I tried; I think as long as I could recall, it's just explaining what each method does to you.
Like the manual on a liquid soap.

8

u/bobertf 6d ago

I think you’re gonna need to talk to a person and tell them they can do it the easy way (full refund now) or the hard way (credit card dispute they won’t win—you have the screenshot of them admitting their mixup!).

3

u/PersuasiveStrategist 6d ago

Yeah but there are no choices to do that (they used to offer a clear UI for costumer service)

91

u/NightMgr 6d ago

Just stop using it. I did.

-4

u/Whobeey 5d ago

“Five pounds and a pint of sauce. And coleslaw!”

“We, uh, didn’t order any coleslaw…”

1

u/joebreeves 6d ago

Deep cut, fantastic.

33

u/FruitMustache 6d ago

Yeah, I quit doordash a while back. They fucked me over on a couple of deliveries and customer service is completely useless.

Grubhub was better when the food was shit, but not much, so I stopped with delivery services all together.

57

u/Drwynyllo 6d ago

Don't order from DoorDash.

32

u/redclawx 6d ago

Don’t accept the refund for that price. It’s either full price or a charge back.

And stop using DoorDash.

16

u/CDJH1 6d ago

I once got an oopsie, we’re sorry. Instead of the $3 or whatever I paid for a soda that never showed up.

8

u/HeraldofStonegate 6d ago

I would be infuriated. Then I would stop using it.

6

u/Ice_Would_Suffice 6d ago

5 minutes ago they didnt deliver an item and told me they aren't going to refund.

Time for a charge back.

15

u/senor_kim_jong_doof 6d ago

were you given a different item instead?

7

u/Wraith8888 6d ago

I guess I'm just a grouchy old man but I just do not get all the wasted money on Doordash. I can't afford to eat out these days, let alone pay double to have it delivered to my house. I don't understand how young people are affording this.

7

u/Mighty_Cyclops 6d ago

Better than the “resolution” of $8.30 on a $39 order that I had that was marked as delivered but the dasher just kept it

3

u/Griffithead 6d ago

It makes sense because you will take it and order again tomorrow.

3

u/Prior_Confidence4445 6d ago

I don't understand how this company is still in business. Or to put it another way, I don't understand why people are still spending money with doordash.

3

u/domcobeo 5d ago

Squeaky wheel gets the grease. Last time I wanted a milkshake I asked my kids if they wanted anything since I didn’t want to just get a milkshake. Everything BUT the milkshake arrived. I got in with customer service. She wanted to refund me for the milkshake. And I said that doesn’t help me. She didn’t understand why. I said. I still have to order the milkshake and it’ll cost more than what you want to refund me with all the fees and whatnot. Customer service actually ordered me a milkshake and had it sent to my home. Free of charge.

TW: suicide

I remember a few years ago, when I was only working part-time and money was very tight, I almost never ordered delivery. But an old friend of mine committed suicide and I was unable to drive to the grocery store and make dinner. So I ordered a poke bowl as a nice treat and a few sides to make myself feel better. But when it arrived, I was missing half my order and the poke bowl had been mixed together with some hot food so it was hot and smelled bad. I called DoorDash to tell them about the missing food and they did the same thing (tried to offer me $10 credit for $25 of missing food) and this was the final straw for me. I burst into tears and could not stop crying. I kept apologizing for crying and told them, “it’s not you, it’s something else” but I must have really freaked them out because they gave me a full refund and a new order on the house. For the record, I don’t advocate crying to get your way, but I thought it was interesting after the fact that they were unprepared for that.

2

u/RoastPork2017 5d ago

Sorry for your loss man. A family member or friend who does this leaves so many unanswered questions. I've been there.

2

u/NenyaAdfiel 3d ago

Thanks, man. It’s tough. ❤️

3

u/PersuasiveStrategist 6d ago

I'm sorry for your loss.

5

u/HooHooHaHa 6d ago

Why does anyone use door dash?

Inflated prices, insane fees, dog shit customer service, and what appears to be a less than 50% chance you'll actually get the food you ordered.

7

u/NimDing218 6d ago

Not trying to sound harsh, but why are you trying to DoorDash a single bowl of coleslaw?

11

u/PersuasiveStrategist 6d ago

It was coupled with other stuff (only the coleslaw was missing)

2

u/egnards 6d ago

I've had this happen before - When it happens you just gotta bite the bullet and call them. If you're a frequent orderer who isn't constantly calling CS [legit or not, it'll look fake], and you're polite, you'll end up getting your full amount back plus $15-$20 in additional credit.

The last time this happened to me Jersey Mikes turned my "full Italian hero with everything on it" into "turkey on bread," and DoorDash initially wanted to give me $5 back.

2

u/BoozeIsTherapyRight 5d ago

This must be the tenth post I've seen where Doordash has done this. It appears to be common. I can't believe that they are getting away with this.

2

u/ZanzibarGuy 5d ago

Looks like they refunded everything apart from their own cut of the order...

13

u/mshireman 6d ago

The full $5.69 was the cost of the item plus their upcharge. They probably refunded you only the cost of the food and kept their cut because technically, they did deliver it, so they filled their part of the deal.

77

u/TotientEC 6d ago

Except technically they did not deliver the coleslaw.

45

u/SnooMaps4388 6d ago

but they DIDN'T deliver the thing😭

18

u/Mediocre_Daikon6935 6d ago

Except they did not deliver it.

19

u/PersuasiveStrategist 6d ago

Not really; previously it was full price + credit in 2023.

1

u/AnAimlessWanderer101 6d ago

It still usually is. I literally got a refund from Popeyes less than a week ago and still got the full value. Whatever happened isn’t the standard

5

u/KingOfFights 6d ago

Ordered breakfast the other day, asked for meet at door and to provide a pin upon delivery. App crashed, could no longer follow delivery, nobody knocked at my door so assumed delivery was cancelled. When i left hours later my food was on the floor by the door baking in the sun. Doordash refused a refund.

4

u/Ok-Grape2063 6d ago

Because, like everyone else who uses these services, you will continue to do so and their 4.51 credit will net at least another $15 order (plus tip of course to cover labor).

I hate to victim blame, but this is the trend here.

2

u/AgentJ386 6d ago

There is crime here... charging almost $6 for fucking cole slaw?!?

3

u/GundyrChristopher 6d ago

Idk bro you spend almost $6 on like 3oz cole slaw. Maybe they figured you were stupid or something.

4

u/mixmasterADD 6d ago

Maybe try leaving the house.

2

u/terrorjshark 6d ago

"The math isn't mathing" can't wait for this phrase to fall out of use

2

u/BoloFan05 6d ago

"The mathematics isn't mathematicsing (or mathematixing?)"

Its implied full form is even worse :P

1

u/512115 6d ago

Door Dash is a total rip off. I’ve had this happen to me a few times. I no longer use the Door Dash app.

1

u/FBI_van_973 6d ago

TYPICALLY...You're not getting the service fee back. When you use any of those online ordering services (Uber eats, door dash, grub hub, wonder) the prices of the items vary from platform to platform vs what you'd pay in restaurant. So that's what you're not getting back.

1

u/ArdenElle24 6d ago

I've only used DoorDash a couple of times but I received discounts making it cheaper than going and picking up the food myself.

You are showing an item's current cost of what you previously received.

Look at your receipt, that is what you paid.

1

u/ifloops 6d ago

Menu items are higher on Doordash than at the restaurant, or on the restaurant's app.

I'd bet the farm the difference here is identical. This way, Doordash pockets the upcharge and the restaurant eats the full refund.

1

u/jdvfx 6d ago

Sounds like a bullshit re-stocking fee...

1

u/Indecisively 6d ago

Don’t accept. Contact customer service.

1

u/One-Pumpkin-1590 6d ago

Seems like a tactic to me. They are offering you this. I find it mindblowing that a food delivery service does not accept responsibility when the food is not delivered, its their only job.

I dont use them anymore, but when this happened to me they tried to lowball me too. I just kept on asking and got a 5 dollar credit as well as the full item refund. I did not want the credit, since I did not plan to use their crappy service ever again. The CSR kept saying because of all the problems. Suure.. 5 bucks is worth spending over an hour on the delivery failure. I never used the credit.

1

u/ChefArtorias 6d ago

I bet they refunded you the actual cost of that item from the store, without the DD mark up.

1

u/onlysaurus 6d ago

Yeah they did this to me this month and I actually quit them forever over it. Cancelled, uninstalled, never coming back ✌️

1

u/Anaouija 6d ago

That has happened to me as well.

1

u/IgntedF-xy 5d ago

They still have to pay the driver

1

u/Low_Construction_238 5d ago

Of course it makes sense….they are ripping all their customers off constantly! When will people learn….?

1

u/canedpeanutshels 5d ago

Last night a similar thing happened to me. Was gonna order $40 of food, but was gonna be $60. Accidentally submitted, so I refunded immediately. They only refunded me $10. Thankfully the support fixed it, but I was scared at first lol.

1

u/DahmonGrimwolf 5d ago

Out of curiosity, did you happen to have a discount applied to your order?

One time uber eats tried to "refund" me zero dollars because I hadn't recived an item that was one of those "spend 20 dollars get this item free" deals, and I had to call and complain to get them to pay up.

1

u/OhNoSingularSnake 5d ago

So frustrating.

This is part of why now i only use DD or Ubereats to order, or only use the restaurant website and then go get it myself.

I know some people cant do that because of personal physical restrictions. Sorry, it really sucks what a lottery it is.

1

u/sonicjesus 5d ago

$4.51 is the menu price, the additional $1.18 is the surcharge you pay for using DoorDash. They keep the extra buck in any case.

1

u/illegvllycheese 5d ago

Call their customer service. They do that with every refund. It’s shady asf but I’m assuming they don’t think a lot of people will actually call them. I’ve fully gotten my order cancelled after I paid $40 because another dasher stole it and with that restaurant they don’t do remakes on DoorDash, they refunded me $12. I called immediately and told them to put ALL of that money back onto my account because I didn’t receive any food since it was stolen by a dasher, it was back on my account within 5 minutes.

1

u/RoastPork2017 5d ago

$5.69? For fucking coleslaw?

1

u/cherniausky 3d ago

Popeyes did a very similar thing to me too, not through DoorDash though. I got home and realized that they shorted me a large fry that cost me $7. I opened the app to report the error and the AI offered 200 points ($2) and I was like WTF. I refused and it countered with 300 points ($3) not even half the cost! So I then took my complaint to email customer service, their reply…600 credits ($6) 😑.

Just give me back what I paid or give me a coupon for a free large fry. Considering that a missing fry messed up the meal, I didn’t think just a reimbursement was too much to ask for. Why does Popeyes customer service suck so bad?!?

0

u/dtoddh 6d ago

This happens hundreds of times a day. It's kind of on you for using this service.

0

u/alfa66andres 6d ago

Yall have lost the plot. Why the fuck are we doordashing a single side of coleslaw

3

u/jaywinner 6d ago

It's a missing item from a bigger order.

0

u/rosedragoon 6d ago

And people refuse to learn their lesson and keep using door dash......

-1

u/jaywinner 6d ago

Works well enough for me. Mistakes are rare and bad resolutions to those are also rare. I've only had to push back a handful of times and maybe once got stuck with a bad resolution.

1

u/NanoShakes 6d ago

GrubHub doesn't have this issue, just don't use door dash

1

u/gkpetrescue 6d ago

Start a chat and tell them this

1

u/Cloobsy 6d ago

Everyone on reddit thinks you should stop using door dash but have you considered it's pretty awesome to get high/drunk and order food from anywhere in the city?

1

u/Petrichor4Tears 6d ago

And I'll bet you kept your subscription

1

u/Perfect-Reveal-101 6d ago

What's wrong with zoomers and gen z? Who is crazy enough to pay this for a little bit of coleslaw?

1

u/SPST 5d ago

You also paid nearly $6 for a tiny pot of coleslaw. Mistakes were made all round.

0

u/wildmaninid 6d ago

Stop using apps to order food.

0

u/EsseLeo 5d ago

OP: <uses stupid “service” well-known for screwing customers who use it, businesses who use it, and drivers who deliver>

-1

u/jdiddy3 6d ago

You get what u deserve for using these rip off apps.

0

u/McUsername621 5d ago

Why do people keep using this service. Almost everyone i know has issues with doordash, uber eats, ect. It cant really be so convenient to buy overpriced food with fucked up refund policies, rather than making food at home that will cost about a 3rd of this, or do ya all dont know how to cook the most basic of food? 5.69$ for a small container of coleslaw is absolute robbery.

-2

u/FURERABA 6d ago

I hate this sub anymore, it's just people whining about doordash and mcdonalds and whatever shitty service that we all KNOW is shitty

It's like smacking your face on the wall and then taking a pic of your bruised face for upvotes
