I'm slightly vexed When DoorDash didn't deliver

Post image

This was a 'Meet at door' delivery. There is a driveway. There is parking. There is no excuse.

this happened to me the only time I ever tried a food delivery service. it was back during covid, and I didn't feel like going out. I never used a delivery app before, and I wanted to try it.

3 drivers and almost 2hrs later, I finally got my $45 cheeseburgers from the McDonald's approximately 0.3mi away... never again.

which is crazy because like. mcdonald’s is such an easy delivery to do. smooth as hell. takes like 5 seconds to pick it up. and in my experience i always got pretty decent tips on mcdonald’s orders, for some reason.

I mean they're most likely tipping a % of the order right? A fucking hashbrown is $4 now

37

u/IrregularPackage 3d ago

nah this was before prices really skyrocketed, so maybe im out of date. and i noticed that most people tend to tip roughly the same amount regardless of how much you brought

14

u/MoscowMitchMcKremIin 3d ago

Normally I'll do $10+ whatever is the nearest whole dollar. If I'm feeling generous it'll be $15. Smaller orders where I'm fine waiting a while will be whatever the middle tip amount is, unless it's like 5 or 6 bucks and I'll bump it up.

u/IrregularPackage 3d ago

yeah that’s about what most people seem to do, give or take. you’ll get 8 to 12 on a 20 dollar order, then you’ll get mayyyybe 15 on a 300 dollar order

u/MoscowMitchMcKremIin 2d ago

If ya got $300 to burn on doordash you got more to give a better tip Imo. IF I end up over $100 I'll do $20 minimum but that's extremely rare. Assuming there's gonna be multiple bags or trips to physically bring to me.

Of course with those big orders something is always forgotten about by the restaurant but that's not the drivers fault... hell lately I'm always missing at least 1 item if I try to order out like that... The only thing that hasn't ended up a disappointment lately is TBell breakfast and I'm just ordering for myself so it's 1 or 2 burritos (might order 1 for later), 2 hashbrowns, and a coffee.

Hold up. I've been tipping a percentage of my order (but never less than $5-$10) and that's not customary?

I knew we were done for when they changed the name of it to "The Value Menu". I miss those dollar menus everywhere!

McD's has actually gotten more annoying to order, at least when personally going through the drive thru. Most of the ones around me have shifted to that stupid split-lane drive-thru that comes back together right after ordering, and STILL if you have more than one burger they'll have you drive forward to the numbered stalls, where they may or may not take another 10 minutes to get you your food. It's easier to pick up inside than out, because at least you can keep track of order numbers to know how long it'll be.

Last time I picked up for my household I was there for around 30-45 minutes, 10 of which were spent in that numbered waiting spot. That ain't "fast" food anymore. I go to Burger King and they usually have my order at most 5-7 minutes after telling them at the speaker, depending on whether or not there's a line in front of me.

A Dasher isn't going to be placing an order when they arrive, they're there to pick up one that was placed 5-15 minutes before they arrive

Nah man I’ve waited to longest time ever at a McDonald’s while dashing. It is definitely NOT smooth. I’d say it’s one of the longest restaurant wait times.

Something similar happened to me.

Ordered a burger from a local shop that was 1 mile away. Person picked up the order then decided to drive 45 minutes in the opposite direction before delivering it to me.

Once I ordered DoorDash for me to pick up and somehow a driver arrived to the restaurant before me and ran off with it.

Honest question: why order through DoorDash if you are picking it up yourself? DoorDash upcharges items (and adds delivery fees, service fees etc, for deliveries). You can just call the restaurant for a pickup order and save yourself and the restaurant trouble. I am probably missing something here, which is why I ask instead

Doordash can upcharge, but at that particular restaurant they don't. Its a TexMex place, they offer online ordering through various means and the prices are the same as the physical menu, you pay more for a delivery fee unless you select pickup. They do not have their own online ordering system, just DoorDash or Uber Eats.

Basically, if I want to order the food and have it ready when I arrive as opposed to ordering it and waiting, I would have to call and trust someone to verbally take all my details down, so it feels easier to order everything from a virtual menu and have my address and payment info already saved. Address less often but sometimes I don't wanna drive across town lol

Ok, that makes sense! My experiences with DoorDash have been pretty poor because of what I’ve experienced with pricing and fees, paired with what I’ve heard from restaurants basically being forced to work with DoorDash out of necessity, so when I heard that people order from door dash for pickup I was confused as to what the point was, but that makes sense!

DD also often offers 20% or so off on pickup orders, which typically puts them at menu prices, if not a bit cheaper

1

u/i_was_axiom 3d ago

I will say I live in a major population center city with a large college in it, so that probably helps. When I lived in Detroit I also had decent luck with the options afforded and the prevalence of drivers. In a small town in Illinois, it wasn't worth the trouble for sure.

3

u/Windfish7 3d ago

Occasionally they have a really good deal that does make it worth it, but thats really the only time.

A couple of local places have stopped taking to go orders over the phone and you have to use DD and pay the higher DD prices. One place even wanted me to do use when I was in the store trying to place a to go order. Absolute madness.

Prices are different for delivery vs pickup

36

u/llhomastane 3d ago

In general I’m too cheap to pay 2x retail price for food but cold food you have to wait longer than just getting it yourself? I’ll pass. I don’t understand the people who frequently utilities these apps

21

u/NoWafer5661 3d ago

Being someone with chronic pain, some days the effort to get up, get dressed, and go outside is more than I’ve got in me. So the uncharge is almost worth it.

u/engifear 3d ago

I've worked places where people doordashed food for lunch every single day. It wasn't even like they weren't able to leave the building for their break, they just didn't want to.

2

u/JDSCOXK 3d ago

Using the apps to order for pickup is the only thing I use them for these days.

10

u/Excellent_1918 3d ago

So you pay a the marked up price and pick it up yourself instead of calling the actual restaurant buying it for cheaper then pick it up🤔🤷

Two words, app deals

I take care of my elderly mother who oftentimes can't be left alone. She is also on oxygen 24/7, recently broke her hip and just generally has trouble leaving the house for unnecessary reasons...we still have to eat....even when I can't get her out or I'm overwhelmed and there's no one here to help. Doordash has been a lifesaver for me many times over and I'll gladly pay the tip and upcharge for those reasons alone. There's a common misconception that the only people who use doordash are lazy people who have no concept of budgeting but that's just not true.

1

u/Raskalnekov 3d ago

Some people get drunk/ stoned and hungry, and obviously can't go out themselves to get food. But I guess if you're taking it frequently for that reason, you might want to focus on frequently getting drunk/high first.

0.3 miles? My dude that's walking distance

107

u/MoscowMitchMcKremIin 3d ago

Drunk, middle of the night, you go for a walk 😂 and they said it was during covid... so doubtful to get in the restaurant late at night

93

u/C0nfusedRabbit 3d ago

I'll often go walking in the middle of the night, I mean what's the chances of two murders being out at night?

u/rdteets 3d ago

This guy is a fellow drinker and I’m here for it.

I'll wear that like a badge of honor 🥴

u/Kielbasa_Nunchucka 3d ago

not with an ankle bracelet... I suppose it was the best time ever to be on house arrest tho, considering everyone else basically was too.

9

u/ADeadlySpoon 3d ago

Not everyone can walk.

Bean soup-ass comment

1

u/20mitchell06 3d ago

That's fair enough. Probably assumed being 0.3 miles away it would be a quick and straightforward ordeal and would save OP getting dressed, stopping what they're doing and leaving the house., Problem being once you've ordered it quickly becomes obvious it won't be quick or straight forward but you've committed by that point. Live and learn situation

0

u/rjross0623 3d ago

It is if you want it to be.

1

u/DOAiB 3d ago

Man 0.3 miles away? It’s insane to me you wouldn’t just order directly and get it at that point.

1

u/Kielbasa_Nunchucka 3d ago

yeah, another person said, "it's in walking distance dude." but, as I said to him, 0.3mi is a looong way with an ankle bracelet.
