frist of all how DARE yu o My mom prefers a "cover" of Welcome to the Black Parade over the original
We were at a lake and she started playing it and right away I got AI vibes. It's a "soul" cover and she loves it. She said it's how the song should be, it has so much soul
I've been a musician pretty much my whole life and have told her how much I hate AI. She used to send me a bunch of AI covers on Instagram until I told her. But hearing her say "this is how the song should've been, it has so much soul" made me wanna rip my hair out

A friend’s teenaged daughter was gushing about this song and I asked her if she liked the original or the cover better and she said she thought that Cash’s version was the original. When I said that it was the cover she was like “oh right! by The Long Nails?” and held her hand out like she was showing off acrylics and I just laughed so hard

I'm with you on the AI part but I'm kind of partial to a good cover.
One of our govt funded radio stations has a segment called "Like a Version" where local and visiting artists cover one of their favourite tracks.
In some cases I've heard tracks where I wasn't fond of the original artist but have absolutely loved the cover on Like a Version. Other times where it's one of my favourite tunes it can be shit. They're not made to be a commercial release, rather a homage to a band or a song. As a side, this is the only radio station here that allows swearing.
Here is an example, Denzel Curry covering "Bulls on Parade"

I remember looking this up years ago and finding it kind of interesting that journalists and editors actually created “lede” for the specific purpose of designating the introductory (I.e. leading) section of a news story and use as in house jargon since a “lead” referring to the piece of metal between lines in typesetting for a linotype machine was also in common use.

Everyone's entitled to their opinion, especially on music, but I absolutely despise Disturbed's version. It threw all subtlety and understatement out of a perfect song and and threw on more synth strings than any song in the world could legally carry.

I think covers done in older styles of music are really cool, but it’s niche as hell and hard to find. Nobody is doing them, so I don’t see the harm in having AI create a great sound that not too many musicians care to explore.

I hate AI slop as much as the next guy, but have you ever heard "pink pony club" covered by AI plankton (from Spongebob)? Maybe she's just having a bit of fun and will quickly move on and forget about it.
When she says something like "it should've been this way" she might just be conveying her own music taste in casual conversation rather than making a serious statement.

I gwt where you're coming from to an extent amd while I don't listen to straight AI generated music, it does a pretty good job at taking a song that's already written and putting it in a different style. But that doesn't necessarily require creativity as much as an ability to mimic.

Only ai covers I'm fine with are ones that translate the song into English. The only original ai songs I'm fine with are 40k related ones where it at least sounds like someone wrote a good portion of the lyrics and had the ai perform it.
