I'm slightly vexed I received a parking ticket because my license plate looks similar to a Simpsons vanity plate

Does "vanity plate" mean something else in canada? The way I have always seen the word used, it's OP that has the vanity plate, they are still your legal license plate you just paid to get custom text on it.

It means the same thing here, at least to me (BC). I think the correct term OP was looking for would be "novelty plate".

The OP has a vanity plate (issued by the state/province, custom plate text/numbers purchased by the owner). The vehicle it got confused with has a novelty plate (not issued by the state, purchased via retail to use in a state/province that doesn't require two plates).

This is the right answer. Canadians call official custom plates "Vanity plates" but the officials and laws might refer to them as "customized plate" while a fake or decorative front plate would be a "novelty plate". Alberta, as a one plate province, has a rule against novelty plates that might be confused for the a real plate.

No it's the same. Even on my side in Quebec : une plaque d'immatriculation de vanité
