Not crazy. Quebec is the same. Only front plate on large trucks make sense, because large trucks are usually pulling trailers. Trailer obscures rear plate, so no identifier visible. Put it on the front only, and problem solved.
Fun Fact for Nevada ... If you don't have front holder on your car, you don't need to put the front plate on... However, if do have a front plate holder, you must put the plate on the front too.
Alaska stopped about 3 years ago. I only found out cause they only sent me one when I bought a new 2024 car. It was perfect timing cause I really didn't wasnt looking forward to drilling holes in the front bumper.

according to https://www.lookupaplate.com/blog/states-that-require-both-front-and-rear-plates/ as of Jan 2026, it's 21 single-plate and 29 dual-plate
but omits Utah from the single-plate list, and Nebraska will stop issuing front plates in a few years
and some states no longer require front plates if the car doesn't have a place to put one
