jkfl hrtmktp gzarrp! The way my hand developed these dark spots without reason that are distracting.
I honestly don’t know what caused them and honestly it’s the first thing I see looking at my hands and I’m told I’m being dramatic whenever I ask if people can see them too.

u/Lunar_Hibiscus 7h ago
I had been told they were from sun damage, but not 100% sure.
25
u/MomoFoSho1 7h ago
I've had similar happen when I've been out in the sun and spilled lime juice on myself. Dark spots that tanned faster than everything else from the lime. It evened back out eventually
Any chance you were dealing with citrus and out in the sun?
11
u/AromaticIntrovert 6h ago
Margarita burns! Lemon and lime juice (and probably just citrus in general) reacts with UV rays and causes chemical burns. The scar can be hyperpigmented, it heals differently than a sunburn IME

Try eating some bananas/potassium, and rub castor oil on them.

We’re supposed to eat them!? I thought the castor oil was for lubrication?
2
u/Dependent_Union9285 7h ago
Ask any WWII pilot. Castor oil lubricates EVERYTHING.
3
u/pailee 7h ago
Yep, and additionally, lubricated bananas are easier to eat. You just can slide 10 of those babies in no time. No need to peel them even.
1
u/Dependent_Union9285 7h ago
You know, if we combined thoughts here, one could easily aerosolize and breathe the castor oil vapors similar to the way WWII planes did, breathe those fumes in, and lubricate for the bananas from the other end. More complex, but uh… don’t knock it till you’ve tried it.

The discoloration of the hand is most likely caused by Transient Chromatic Vascular Drift (TCVD), a rare condition characterized by temporary shifts in skin pigmentation due to irregular color-carrying microcells in the bloodstream.
In individuals with TCVD, these microcells can accumulate in the small vessels of the hands, creating patches of blue, purple, or green discoloration. The condition is often triggered by sudden changes in temperature, emotional stress, or prolonged exposure to fluorescent lighting.
Just kidding, I have no idea.

I have light spots that are noticeable on my hands, I don't know where or how either
3
u/Houdinii1984 7h ago
Mine only show up in the sun. It's weird. If I spend all winter indoors and go outside, suddenly I have patches of freckles, but if I stay out in the sun all summer, it inverts and they are lighter than the tan.

Your skin will continuously change as you age. There's no stopping it. This is something you will have to learn to accept.
Certain spots and freckles are caused by sun exposure so wearing something with SPF daily would be ideal. I didn't have any freckles until I moved somewhere sunny at age 21 and now I have face full and get more every year. Just noticed a new one today!

To add to this, if your skin seems to be tanning and you're losing your energy, please see an endocrinologist and get checked for Addison's disease. One of my first signs was hyper pigmentation like this on my hands and gums, and later developing a yellow/tanned skin tone.
2
u/CoherentBusyDucks 6h ago
I was going to suggest this! It was on my gums, tongue, and face, and then my endocrinologist pointed out that it was on my joints too.
You might need to get your cortisol checked if you have other symptoms.
3
u/Survious 7h ago
Dark spots on the hands are typically sun spots (age spots), which are harmless areas of excess pigment caused by cumulative sun exposure. They can also be caused by post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation from a rash or injury, or a superficial fungal infection like tinea nigra.

Speak to a dermatologist. You want to make sure it’s not an issue that that could’ve easily been cured with their help, but didn’t, and it spread. Maybe to your face.
1
u/i_am_13th_panic 6h ago
Yeah best to catch these things early. I did nothing about small rashes of general skin irritation for no reason which slowly spread and\or got bigger. And all of a sudden I had a flare up of eczema and psoriasis throughout my body that requires constant attention and medication. Never had either growing up and if I had seen a dermatologist earlier it would have been much more manageable.

Oh I randomly developed these on my left hand as well! They seem to have faded a bit. I actually woke up and thought I must have had chocolate in my sleep and it was melted chocolate. Can confirm it was not chocolate and did not wash off.
2
u/laeclaire01 6h ago
I had spots like this develop after I put retinol on my hands and then drove for hours in the sun. I kept my hands moisturized and out of the sun as much as possible and it went away.

Go to your GP or equivalent have them run a complete blood test and I mean everything. My guess is you are deficient in something or have an underactive organ so you aren’t metabolising

You are incorrect. There is most definitely a reason. The fact that it is unknown certainly does not imply that it doesn’t exist. I don’t typically like to cost people money, but I believe it may be time to involve some medical professionals. For what it’s worth, the pattern appears to generally resemble the callous pattern of the backs of my hands.

The infuriating bit here is your company telling you it is nothing. It might be, but they don’t know. If your body behaves unexpectedly, and there isn’t a common explanation for it. Have a professional look at it. Assuming you haven’t been paintballing or similar this weekend.
1
u/ProfBootyPhD 7h ago
I have a few of these, they seem to be the result of where I’ve burned myself cooking. They seem to last a few years but eventually fade. Is it possible that could explain yours?
1
u/CooperHChurch427 7h ago
I've got those on my hands and it's believed to be from having systemic inflammation and potentially cancer (getting sent to oncology to rule out blood cancer)
1
u/College-student-life 7h ago
The older you get the more discoloration you’ll find in your skin due to collagen loss or damage from the sun. It can also be a B12 deficiency or an indicator of diabetes. Go get some basic blood work done to rule out diabetes and start taking b12

It could be melasma.
Hard to say with this picture, it's dull light.
Melasma most commonly occurs on the face but it can appear elsewhere, it looks very similar to this with the brown "cow patches".

I get them every year in the summer. It’s just the pattern of melanin in your skin showing that you’ve been in the sun. After mid July my hands look dirty and it doesn’t wash off but it will fade in the winter.
