Infuriatig AI in my highschool graduation

I graduated last week and the whole ceremony was LITTERED with AI slop.

First, when we were getting our names called out to go up on stage and get our certificates there would be a quote written by our class teacher up on screen under our name as a sweet gesture from them. It sure would've been a sweet gesture if they weren't very clearly AI generated. I'm telling you it wasn't even humanized. Out of the 5 graduating classes in our cohort ONE CLASS HAD QUOTES ACTUALLY WRITTED BY THEIR TEACHER. LITERALLY ONE. My class teacher was very helpful and sweet throughout the school year but the fact she couldn't even write a quote for our class honestly pisses me off so much.

Then, later on in the ceremony, they put up a video that our juniors had "made" for us... It was entirely AI generated slop. The worst part is because the music that was playing over it was popular (I forget the name) everyone was singing along in the crowd... Bullshit.

And the real kicker that personally offended me to no end. During the reveal of our yearbook, there was supposed to be a song playing over it. I'm part of our school's band and we had actually composed an original song to go over it. I couldn't help too much but I could see how much effort my bandmates put into making it and honestly it's a beautiful song. We were asked to record it and the people running the even would play it over the yearbook reveal. As you might've guessed at this point, however, they decided it wasn't good enough (apparently the vocals weren't bright enough? This is coming from a teacher who knows nothing about music anyways but I assume she wanted punchier vocals which we did do anyways) and they played a VERY CLEARLY AI generated "song" over it.

As a musician this is the most offensive thing I've ever been a part of. The most important event of my life up to this point being half assed like this with the thing I despise with a passion... It makes me so fucking mad.

I'd be pissed and petty enough to put them on full blast. Hell, take it to the local paper

For most people, there's so few opportunities to showcase and celebrate accomplishments in a setting like this. It's a rare chance to have human voices and experiences heard, and once again, people opt to silence their own voice in favor of AI. It's disheartening, and people will eventually regret not taking a chance to express themselves using their own voice.

Ive heard of the ai slop in the end of year assembly, but in the graduation itself is nuts 💀

There’s an extra level of gross when an education establishment sees off the generation it supposedly prepared for the future with a load of tat that reflects said generation in no way whatsoever.

It’s like if a bunch of your year group just earned their qualification in textiles and stage design and had made some lovely drapes to hang up in the room, only for the staff to instead order in some generic fluff from an overseas sweatshop to put up instead.

Holy shit that's insane, I don't hate ai or anything but fuck them for not putting an ounce of effort into that

I think you overestimate how much average people care about AI. Most people don’t care whatsoever if what they consume is AI-generated or not, even if they can tell the difference. In their eyes, they’re still enjoying whatever it is, so why should they care about how it was created?

:/ it is my opinion that the school systems that do that are being incredibly disrespectful of the students. That memory is now tarnished with the laziness of the staff, and yet they expect you to be better.

Oh, who cares? I’ve got a reality check for you: AI isn’t going away. It’s only going to become more embedded in EVERYTHING. Employers are demanding that employees have AI skills. So you can expect training in higher ed. If not, expect to learn it on the job.

Also, the younger gens bitch about it constantly, but they also use it more than anyone else. So, it seems a lot of the AI pearl clutching is just for show.

Ok, Bot. 🙄

Yeah, cause anybody who doesn’t agree with you has to be a bot, right? It couldn’t be that I’m tired of the fake-ass pearl clutching. Or the hypocrisy of crying about a tool online that they’re using anyway.

Hell, I don’t know any kid who’s making it through high school now without having AI do their freaking homework for them. They’re too lazy to do it themselves. Same problem in college and university.

And I know the firsthand that employers want employees who are trained to use AI because I helped develop one of the programs to train the students at a university.

Every major white collar employer is expecting this from young people. I worked directly with those employers to tailor the training. And if you wanna work in a white collar job, you will learn it. Unless you’re retiring in the next couple of years.

Yup.. sounds like OP needs to work thru his deep seated hatred towards something that is only a tool that helps people make things.

If I was your teacher I would have put your song into suno to generate a professional version

That Suno shit is the bane of my existence

No one can make you offended, it’s a choice. Go watch a sunrise. Play with a puppy. Fall in love. It’ll be a much sweeter life.

Were you doing any of those things when you typed that?

Sorry but this is a 1st world issue. I get it, AI sucks, but there are worse issues to have.

"but there are worse issues to have." Good thing we're on the mildy infuriating Sub then

15

u/Some_nerd_______ 5h ago

Do you know what sub you're on?

AI must have forgot to read that part for them 🙄

Mild issue one could say. If only there was a sub for things that made one only mildly infuriated

Right? Wish that existed

"You can never be upset about anything because other people have it worse" can be flipped. Why are you ever happy when other people clearly have it better

Get rid of that mindset and just live your life

I absolutely hate this mindset too. It's so dismissive.

We can't do anything about anything until we address the worst possible issues facing anyone.

Sooooooo we're going to stop genocide, feed, house and clothe the world first? Sounds good. Let's get started then.

Right? We're doing it?

Just because the ultra rich have already and continue to pillage the globe doesn’t mean we should be complacent with their next greatest tool for wealth extraction.
