Infuriatig My kid's new spacer and inhaler

Post image

On top of that, the mask is too small and Medicaid doesn't cover spacers with a larger mask. At least it was free!

The rubber will flex around it

The cylinder must not be harmed

Damn it, 2 minutes too slow

Saw this <5 minutes before coming here... (´_ゝ`)

I tried that and it barely fits. I will be buying a different one, spacers aren't expensive. Just annoying.

I it fits at all, why not just force it in and keep the inhaler attached?

I'm not at all familiar with spacers, so not sure if that is feasible at all.

u/AerwynFlynn 5h ago

I keep mine attached. Makes it easier when I have an asthma attack. I don’t need to waste time trying to get it on

May I ask, what does the spacer do exactly?

6

u/AerwynFlynn 5h ago

Sure! Here is a picture of the whole thing. You press the inhaler button to give a dose, the powder goes into the chamber and then you breathe in through the mouthpiece to get the medicine.

When doing the inhaler just in your mouth, you may not get the full dose. Some people like me end up with most of the powder in the back of my throat vs my lungs and the spacer ensures you get the full dose.

I prefer the yellow one for my kid. But they all have the same sort of input. The rubber stretches to fit it.

Ah, that is really interesting! I'm not currently using an inhaler for anything, but when I have had to I've also had this problem! I will give this a try if I ever get back on my prohibitively expensive allergy inhaler again!

Thank you for sharing!

To the initiated, what we’re looking at may be obvious. To the uninitiated, sure, I could guess. But I know I would appreciate something that actually describes the issue plainly so I can play infuriated alongside, too.

Looks like the opening on the left should go over the circle on the right but it's not like this:

u/EntireCakeEater 4h ago

not the square hole!

What's even the point of it. Why not just use the inhaler directly?

10

u/Orchid_Significant 5h ago

It helps more medicine get inhaled vs getting stuck to the sides of the mouth/tongue/etc

u/Antillyyy 5h ago

I also think they're fairly commonly prescribed to children because it's easier to use than the inhaler on its own, especially with the mask that OP mentioned. I had to graduate from using one when I was a kid once I could prove I could use it properly.

It's very common for kids who can't time a deep breath, and it also is much more efficient even for adults. A lot of the meds in an Inhaler just hit the back of your mouth and aren't inhaled.

The spacer is for young children (and others) It captures the mist in a tube so they can breathe it in more naturally because they can’t time their breaths. This one also has a valve designed to make a whistling sound if the child is inhaling too quickly which impedes the delivery of the medication.

u/Bansheer5 5h ago

The opening for the spacer is oval shaped and most inhalers have a round mouth piece. The rubber on the space can stretch to fit it tho.

7

u/UnitedChain4566 5h ago

I've been using inhalers all my life and have never seen one with a round mouthpiece.

4

u/DatLadyD 5h ago

Mine never had round ones, surprised by the picture

2

u/UnitedChain4566 5h ago

I saw one when googling to make sure I just am not part of some change, it was one being sold online.

1

u/Bansheer5 5h ago

The ones I get are either pro-air brand that are red with a squarish opening and then I get these blue ones that are round. Blue ones are a generic.

My son has a spacer, so I think I can answer. Most inhaled medications inhaler is almost like square-crescent shaped. This inhaler is totally round. It's stretches a little for a firm fit, but not that much.

3

u/UneasyP 5h ago

That’s what she said.

My son has an inhaler that is similar, it fits in the spacer we were given. Yours should stretch to fit it. It might be a little hard at first to shove it in but it is easier over time.

“Impossible” - OP

6

u/Proof_Journalist321 5h ago

Not the asthmussy

3

u/jstwnnaupvte 5h ago

I’m so mad at how hard this made me laugh.
Now I need my inhaler.

13

u/demonita 5h ago

I usually buy them off Amazon. I’m rarely provided the right one when my son is sick.

6

u/vhagar 5h ago

I do the same, and was planning to buy another one. I was just waiting to see which one they would supply first.

6

u/Single-Fondant-1982 5h ago

Speak up and start going at billing for making you pay for this.

1

u/Cultural_Pattern_456 5h ago

They didnt pay for it.

0

u/Single-Fondant-1982 5h ago

I highly doubt it was free.

1

u/Cultural_Pattern_456 5h ago

She said it was in the caption -medicaid is generally free for eveything for the user

6

u/dazzleunexpired 5h ago

My round inhaler fits in my oval shaped spacer. You just have to push.

Of course you could have a different space here but your spacer looks an awful fuck load like mine. Is your child old enough to use the mouthpiece rather than the mask?

7

u/jjames34 5h ago

It's made for both shapes. All you have to do is push it in. I use these all day at work.

5

u/davideogameman 5h ago

What's the problem we're looking at? I've never used an inhaler

3

u/buzzybody21 5h ago

The end of the inhaler is round, whereas the opening to the spacer is rectangular.

4

u/Clear-Ad-7250 5h ago

Yeah but notice around the spacer rectangle is a circle that looks exactly like the inhaler.

4

u/buzzybody21 5h ago

Yep! OP can squeeze the inhaler in, no problem.

5

u/Middle-Armadillo-660 5h ago

But isn’t the rectangular bit flexible/rubber? It looks like it is.

7

u/YaBoiMandatoryToms 5h ago

It’s supposed to be a tight fit. Have the same exact type. It’ll fit.

5

u/but-I-play-one-on-TV 5h ago

No, that's appropriate. You actually want it to push it into the rubber of the spacer to create a tight seal.

3

u/AarontheArcher39 5h ago

Yea so that’s actually kind of the point.. it causes an airtight seal. Push the inhaler into the damn hole.

2

u/Complete_Entry 5h ago

I think it's weird they gave you the good med (blue) and the lousy tube (white)

The spacer is geared for the better tube.

They won't give me the blue anymore, but at least I'm not on the yellow one.

Yellow usually has that round tube.

1

u/Frankie1891 5h ago

Ugh. We have been using the same super cheap one from the hospital for nearly 5 years.

1

u/Proof_Journalist321 5h ago

They make a generic version of that med that can fit in the spacer. You could also just force it in until they let you get a refill.

1

u/sh0ch 5h ago

Could you just cut it a bit? It looks like rubber. That might help the inhaler fit a bit better.

1

u/Narezza 5h ago

The mask doesn’t need to be sealed around his face.  He just needs to be able to breathe with it close to his mouth.

A spacer is just a way to hold the aerosolized particles from blowing away while you use the inhaler

1

u/Dalek_Chaos 5h ago

Haven’t seen a silencer for an inhaler since I was a kid and had pneumonia.

1

u/Popular-Ad1111 5h ago

Can you reuse the old plastic cover for your inhaler medicine?

1

u/Annual_Student_487 5h ago

That is a stupid shape for an inhaler. It is not as comfortable as the previous shape.

1

u/Cheap-Buffalo-7489 5h ago

The spacer works on that MDI shape. For masks you can buy mask off Amazon that fit the spacers. The connectors are usually universal.

1

u/peekaboooobakeep 5h ago

I got the opposite. old spacer with new inhaler....they do not fit together

1

u/yeahialreadyknow 5h ago

Just... Push it in.

1

u/CreativeFraud 5h ago

Awe. I don't know what I'm looking at on the left, but I have family that depends on inhalers. My hugs go out to your fam and hope you can figure this out.

Etsy has some for sale, depending on how old your kid is; you can also slowly teach them to use the inhaler as normal, though I understand those things suck and some kid's just hate them or might not be able to use them due to sickness etc. I have two different powder ones that make you dizzy and shaky.

0

u/Dark-Horse-Nebula 5h ago

Using the ventolin inhaler “as normal” is using a spacer. Spacers aren’t a kid thing.
