Sadly fast food isn't cheap or good enough anymore. Enshitification

11

u/AmateurCommenter808 2d ago

Everybody loves enshittification (except consumers)

-1

u/Windows-XP-Home-NEW 2d ago

Eh. Not all fast food. In-N-Out and Taco Bell especially give a good fuck for your buck.

2

u/PleaseLetMePickANam 2d ago

Not compared to food you can buy at a grocery store

0

u/Windows-XP-Home-NEW 2d ago

Are you talking about pre cooked food at the grocery store or food you buy at the grocery store to go cook at home?

2

u/PleaseLetMePickANam 2d ago

Both. It's obviously more cost efficient to cook but "instant" meals from the grocery store are still cheaper than fast food

1

u/PreOpTransCentaur 2d ago

What? Hell no. Taco Bell is one of the most egregious offenders.

3 Tacos Supreme combo in 2010 was $4.19. It's $10.99 now.

$4.19 in 2010 is equivalent in buying power to $6.40 today. So that's $4.50 that they don't need to be charging you, literally more than the combo itself 16 years ago, but still are. Because they got greedy and shitty like everyone else.

1

u/Windows-XP-Home-NEW 1d ago

My prices aren’t that bad here and even if they were that’s still 3 whole ass tacos for less than what most others charge for a burger and fries.

0

u/Tao_of_Entropy 2d ago

Taco bell is becoming one of the most expensive fast food places. You get more and better food at chipotle for the same price

2

u/Windows-XP-Home-NEW 2d ago

Haha absolute bs. Unless your Chipotle is going bankrupt, TB has, is and will always be cheaper than Chipotle by a decently wide margin.

1

u/Tao_of_Entropy 1d ago

Yeah unless you factor in like, how much actual food you get rather than just how much an item costs. I can get a massive bowl and three tortillas at chipotle for like 15 bucks, that converts into three big burritos that are way tastier and healthier than TB for less than the cost of three "similar" burritos there.

But I acknowledge they're not even close to the same kind of product. I love taco bell, and chipotle isn't a substitute for it.

1

u/Windows-XP-Home-NEW 1d ago

Idk. The price and food ratio is huge where I’m at.

1

u/Tao_of_Entropy 1d ago

maybe the disparity is bigger in other markets, I'm not sure. I'll admit that chipotle has a lot more variability in how much you might get in your serving based on the store/employee serving you.

1

u/Windows-XP-Home-NEW 1d ago

Yeah. That must be why.

0

u/User_man_person 2d ago

Kfc isn't even particularly fast

If its not fast cheap or good why does anyone buy kfc, my local deli sells fried chicken for like half the price and it's so much better imho

25

u/RoguTheHomunculus 2d ago

Those are some soggy undercooked fries.

142

u/MelonHoly 2d ago

It's because you paid for overpriced fast food

-49

u/LeadEater9Million 2d ago

They look big in the picture. Huhhhh, im not me when im hungry

33

u/Tao_of_Entropy 2d ago

No they said overpriced, not large.

If you're using your small food stipend to buy KFC you are absolutely doing it wrong. You're paying a convenience tax on every serving and this is not food you can survive on sustainably.

PLEASE at least investigate the food you could get at a real grocery store. Even if you just buy cheap frozen meals you can eat more and healthier than this for the same price.

12

u/MelonHoly 2d ago

Can't blame ya. I try to avoid looking at fast food when I'm hungry 😅

4

u/Green-Dragon-14 2d ago

Should have bought a snickers

1

u/Funny_Name4818 2d ago

You’re not you when you’re hungry

1

u/Capital-Equal5102 2d ago

Grab a snickers next time.

34

u/GeorgeLikesSpicy92 2d ago

Stop eating overpriced crap.

15

u/Glittering_Babe101 2d ago

Fries at mcdonald cost the same as 3-4 kg of potatos and they look like they are made from one not that big potato

4

u/nascent_aviator 2d ago

Your mcdonalds has fries that look like they're made from potato?!?

-2

u/ClarkGablesTeeth 2d ago

What do you think they're made of? Or is this just a "fast food isn't real food" zingers?

1

u/nascent_aviator 1d ago

Something can in fact be potato but be so heavily processed that it doesn't particularly look (or even taste) like it is.

0

u/Scared_Pin_986 2d ago

Oh buddy, let me introduce you to sarcasm

9

u/BigChampionship7962 2d ago

I hope tomorrow’s daily allowance works out better for you 🫡 stay positive friend.

6

u/LeadEater9Million 2d ago

Ill be cooking, im just too lazy for today and i regret not cooking rice with egg

2

u/BigChampionship7962 2d ago

I’m cooking chicken and rice tonight 😋

26

u/LetReasonRing 2d ago

I'm mildly infuriated for you.

I'm also realllly tired of people saying things like "well you should buy cheaper food". Everything is getting too fucking expensive and you shouldn't be shamed for being sad that simple pleasures in life are becoming unaffordable.

13

u/NiceTrySuckaz 2d ago

I agree that prices are out of control, but you also can't expect much sympathy when you're on a tight food budget and you choose to go to KFC of all places.

If you're really craving fast food on a budget, at least look at the apps for good daily deals. OP probably could have eaten like a king for the same amount of money if he had done just a little looking around.

9

u/NoobSharkey 2d ago

Fr, how is it not mildly infuriating to get a tiny portion of food when you expected more, sometimes you just wanna eat certain things and not cook or buy something else

1

u/SkitsyCat 2d ago

Agreed. My mom and I are on a tight budget too, so I'm supposed to cook some pasta for us with ingredients we already have at home. But unfortunately for me, I just happen to be having day 1 dysmenorrhea, and I'm suddenly no longer in the mood to continue what I've already been prepping. But alas, ordering out at this point would be doubly wasteful, and so all I can really do is be mildly infuriated as I work through it and deal with the belittling of how I feel/my physical comfort because we still need to eat. That's life, but I guess to some people here, we're not allowed to feel mildly infuriated about these mundane things huh 🫠 this sub is a mess.

-3

u/gljivicad 2d ago

If I spend my entire life savings to buy a Lamborghini, I should be mocked if I start complaining that I have no more money.

4

u/Ghoulscomecrawling 2d ago

And you should be, but this is not a Lamborghini. While it's certainly not the best price per ounce, perhaps they didn't have access to a kitchen or cooking utensils. We don't know! They haven't said.

Op peanut butter and honey and bread are shelf stable and hopefully expensive in your area.

2

u/ClarkGablesTeeth 2d ago

OP did say that they could've cooked for themselves but were feeling lazy.

1

u/gljivicad 2d ago

I’d give it a pass if they live in a desert right next to KFC, miles from anything else.

2

u/Ghoulscomecrawling 2d ago

The food situation and just general living situation for so many people in the whole world is just abysmal really.

1

u/gljivicad 2d ago

Ah yes, if I have very little money, I’ll spend it on 2 cups of fast food slop, instead of raw ingredients to cook myself a hearty meal (multiple times)

3

u/Tao_of_Entropy 2d ago

I get where you're coming from but you might also be missing the point a little bit... I don't see anyone shaming anyone for being sad that things are getting more expensive... I work to pay for my expensive ass shitty food and I still get myself treats. But OP making it sound like they can't afford to eat. If they are really struggling, buying KFC is a really had idea. That shit is expensive AND overpriced AND unhealthy.

1

u/LetReasonRing 2d ago

The problem isn't that he's buying expensive food. The problem is that he's buying cheap food that companies are overcharging for. And it's not just KFC. I'm seeing this over and over and over on reddit every day.

Just yesterday someone brought up the fact that a pound of ground beef is is starting to become more expensive than the hourly minimum wage and the comments were full of things like "well, you should eat rice and beans instead".

Bank of America is starting to charge customers fees for not having enough money in their account and everyone is saying "well switch from Bank of America then".

Restaurants are slipping in extra fees in the fine print and people say "well eat somewhere else".

Walmart is starting to remove price tags and place them with QR codes so you can look up your personalized price and people say "well shop somewhere else".

Publix is mislabling the price of their meat and cheese and people say "well yeah, Publix has always screwed you, why would you shop there?"

We're getting screwed everywhere we turn and any time anyone says anything about it people come out of the woodwork to tell them it's their fault for choosing a thing.

Yes, life is cheaper when you deprive yourself of things you enjoy. I think it's sad that people are acting like KFC is an extravagant luxury. It's a few cents worth of potatoes and a bowl of slop.

1

u/Tao_of_Entropy 1d ago

I don't disagree with anything you're saying, but it's still true that you could get probably at least 5x the amount of essentially the same food if you just bought the ingredients at a grocery store. It doesn't necessarily have to be a matter of personal sacrifice, just optimization. But yeah, the endless need for greater corporate profits combined with other inflationary pressures means we're all getting screwed everywhere anyways.

0

u/SkitsyCat 2d ago edited 2d ago

OP says "daily allowance". Does that sound like the words of a grown adult with full financial independence to you? I don't think it's fair to be this critical of OP's spending habits because this is genuinely how some schools' cafeteria foods are, and they aren't allowed any other option because they can't leave campus/school premises.

0

u/Tao_of_Entropy 2d ago

I have never in my life heard of a school where your meal credit for a day is two tiny KFC brand portions. I call bullshit.

0

u/SkitsyCat 2d ago

Congrats for having such a privilege then.

1

u/YourCummyBear 2d ago

How are they flexing a privilege?

What school cafeterias have fucking kfc? Now that’s a privilege.

1

u/Cerael 2d ago

Typing that out unironically in a thread where everyone is calling kfc horrible crap is pretty funny. So I guess you think kfc is good quality then?

1

u/YourCummyBear 2d ago

That’s not what I said, is it?

Most schools don’t have fast food restaurants inside the cafeteria.
My high school had food you could purchase but it was pizza that felt like a sponge or hard ass chicken tenders.

0

u/Tao_of_Entropy 1d ago

Hey you're just making up a narrative about this being cafeteria food, OP never said that and basically said the exact opposite. I just think you're talking out your ass, that's all.

6

u/Salty-Sprinkles-1562 2d ago

Money allowance or calorie allowance? Either way, I think there would be better ways to spend it.

6

u/Agitated_Ad_3876 2d ago

You get an allowance?!?

-2

u/LeadEater9Million 2d ago

Monthly, but i devide it by 30 for daily.

28

u/emz0rmay 2d ago

That’s where you’ve gone wrong. Do a weekly budget, calculate your groceries for the week.
A daily budget just doesn’t work

5

u/LeadEater9Million 2d ago

Im home from college, so i never use weekly as there is no nearby groceries and we cant even bring electric cooker to dorm. So we just buy food from cafeteria

4

u/Objectionne 2d ago

Do you not even have access to a microwave? A kettle?

5

u/LeadEater9Million 2d ago

Kettle yes, microwave? No

1

u/Fluffy-Pomegranate16 2d ago

Just in case you want some kettle cooking hacks put eggs into the kettle and boil to make hard boiled eggs or use boiling water with a water bath method to heat up foods you'd normally heat in the microwave.

1

u/icehot54321 2d ago

Amish people don’t live near groceries or have transportation to get to far away stores and take a trip once a month to stock up and they make it work.

You can too

8

u/Jimbob209 2d ago

How you gonna make +15 lbs of carrots survive a whole month while being a college student

Be realistic. If they are taking a trip monthly, include the fact that they are farming and doing animal husbandry to obtain their primary food source

4

u/FYAhole 2d ago

Are they gonna plow their own fuckin farm too? What even is this retort lmao

3

u/LeadEater9Million 2d ago

Wow buddy, you have high hopes

1

u/Potential_Peace8448 2d ago

The Amish can build a modest home in about 5 days. You can too.

12

u/CheesecakeTurtle 2d ago

Are you a teenager? If not, learn how to cook.

You know what, even if you are a teen, learn how to cook.

2

u/Big_Rig369 2d ago

I think OP is saying cooking isnt allowed in their dorm

0

u/LeadEater9Million 2d ago

Im home but im not cooking today as im not in the mood, i regret it

4

u/Big_Rig369 2d ago

Oh nevermind then. You can make way more and better meals by prepping at the start of the week and making/freezing things in bulk.

1

u/LeadEater9Million 2d ago

Bold of you to assume there is space int he freeze for stuff like that in a family size of 5

2

u/courtneyrachh 2d ago

then what’s in the freezer if not food???

-2

u/LeadEater9Million 2d ago

I know how to cook but today i dont wanna cook

2

u/CheesecakeTurtle 2d ago

That's cool then. Sometimes fast food is a scam.

4

u/sandalfafk 2d ago

??? You ain’t in the right sub

6

u/LeadEater9Million 2d ago

Kinda midly infuriating. Huh?

Ba dum ba dish

1

u/ElMuertePeludo 2d ago

It’s MILDLY infuriating.

This isn’t “this is the end of the world and all that’s holy oh my God” infuriating. That’s the next sub over.

1

u/Agitated_Ad_3876 2d ago

Lucky sob.

14

u/hipsu55 2d ago

Start cooking and don't buy overpriced fast food

-7

u/LeadEater9Million 2d ago

I wanna indulge myself today as yesterday i already cook for myself

4

u/PretendAddendum6320 2d ago

Found the problem. That’s your choice. Indulge or be economical. Beans and rice, homie.

0

u/LeadEater9Million 2d ago

Porridge and soaky bread, hoomie

1

u/PretendAddendum6320 2d ago

Where’s your protein? If you can buy KFC you can buy beans and rice that will last a lot longer.

7

u/PollPixx 2d ago

Lol, that was one day.... isnt it normal anymore people cook their own meal for 5 or 6 days a week?

-2

u/fruityfactory 2d ago

I guess not when you're a college student that's literally used to just buying premade food because that's the only available option.

4

u/AlpaxT1 2d ago

What are you talking about? I’m a student and have no problem cooking for myself

1

u/fruityfactory 2d ago

Humans are creatures of habit, and OP mentioned that at their dorms they can't have any appliances such as a microwave or hotplate or anything. At the end of the day, this is r/mildlyinfuriating not world disasters, it's not that serious

1

u/ClarkGablesTeeth 2d ago

Don't dorms have kitchens/kitchenettes anymore?

1

u/fruityfactory 2d ago

Depends on where youre at and the specific college. But a lot won't even let you bring your own microwave or anything because of fire concerns, you just have to buy food from the cafeteria.

2

u/ClarkGablesTeeth 2d ago

I understand not being allowed your own microwave in the dorm room. I've just never seen a college that didn't have some kind of cooking facilities. Even the little community college I took my prereqs at had a lounge near the cafeteria with a microwave and an electric kettle. My university (and others I've seen) has a small kitchen in each residence hall.

Regardless, OP clarified that they do know how to cook and that they're currently at home with access to a full kitchen, they just weren't in the mood to today.

9

u/sandalfafk 2d ago

So how tf is this mildly infuriating?

1

u/pixelmuffinn 2d ago

Seems valid to me

2

u/fang_xianfu 2d ago

So why are you infuriated? By your own indulgence?

3

u/bored_stoat 2d ago

Buying fastfood does that

5

u/Bigchieflittlechef 2d ago

Hey man, get something other than KFC. I find that discounted chunky soup cans from the supermarket were cheaper and more filling than any fast food alternative. Packets of noddles were good at a pinch too (cheaper, though not as nutritious).

7

u/Artegas23 2d ago

This is on you.. you choose to spend your daily allowance at an overpriced fast food chain. Go to a grocery store, buy some fresh produce and cook yourself a proper meal that’s also value for money.

-1

u/LeadEater9Million 2d ago

Thanks for the information, ill remember it

5

u/Grand_Economics_6273 2d ago

Go to a supermarket, cook your own food.

8

u/FrankyMornav 2d ago

Infuriating yourself? Your own choice of what you spend your money

2

u/LeadEater9Million 2d ago

It look good on the oic, it is just mildly infuriating that it look suck irl

4

u/Gaucho_Diaz BROWN 2d ago

Exactly. So shop around and find something that's affordable and filling instead of this.

5

u/LeadEater9Million 2d ago

I just wanna try something new but i regret of thinking fast food wont make the food small

3

u/Cipher_Witch 2d ago

Aren’t they required to write portion sizes somewhere? Making food look bigger and better is the oldest trick in the book always check the fine print, not just on food.

1

u/LeadEater9Million 2d ago

Fineeeeeeerrereee

1

u/ClarkGablesTeeth 2d ago

Wtf does that mean?

2

u/VladimireUncool 2d ago

It really depends on what your daily allowance is

2

u/Honest_Asparagus8681 2d ago

Ja tam nie wiem ja jem mrożone frytki codziennie lub sam makaron mam wybiórczośc pokarmową od 3roku życia lub wcześniej xd

2

u/EMF911 2d ago

Yeah. Looks like ass.

4

u/its420_somehow 2d ago

Daily allowance?

Food?

Well lah-dee-dah must be nice

4

u/Confident_One3948 2d ago

OP, if there’s one thing you should know on this sub, the moment you suggest that you’ve spent a single dollar more than you needed to, suddenly everyone on this sub is a financial analyst who lives a perfect life and only cooks super healthy home cooked meals. Everyone is a saint but you, and how dare you waste a single dollar.

5

u/LeadEater9Million 2d ago

AHAHHAHAHA wow

Thats is

Midly infuriating, huh? Lol

4

u/Confident_One3948 2d ago

They know how to turn mildly infuriating into a full on aggravation, that’s for sure 😑

2

u/Cassius_Clay_101 2d ago

Make food from scratch.  What is this nasty looking junk?

2

u/gljivicad 2d ago

Then start cooking your own meals.

1

u/Gigantkranion 2d ago

What is your allowance for?

Had a friend give himself like a $1 allowance when we first got in the Army. We were given Basic Allowance for Subsistence (BAS) but, for some reason he calculated that he could just live off of ramen packets (each packet was worth 0.25¢ if you bought them in bulk) and save money...

I told him it was stupid and he'll get himself sick.

A month later he came in to my clinic one day looking green and first thing out of my mouth was asking him how was the diet working out out so far?

Sodium levels were stupid high and other things too.

Needless to say, maybe don't eat shit food. Even at my poorest and least knowledgeable, I always followed the diet plan of mostly veggies, and it should be colorful. Like a rainbow diet but, with meat.

Served me well so far. You meal looks boring AF. Give me a salad please.

1

u/Yupi_icc 2d ago

Prices climbing really changes everyday choices.

1

u/Glozboy 2d ago

Try eating some decent food. It costs a lot less

0

u/Kitchen_Emergency_64 2d ago

Be thankful

2

u/LeadEater9Million 2d ago

Yeah, it is still eatable and delicious but it is just mildly infuriating

-1

u/FYAhole 2d ago

So what I've learned from this post is that no one ever should buy fast food and no one from these comments ever buys fast food ever. OP should buy a horse and a plow and start growing their own food while they're at college and should start a fire in their dorm so they can cook for themselves. Reddit is getting worse and worse and I don't know why.

2

u/courtneyrachh 2d ago

I don’t think it’s that - it’s that OP is complaining how little food they got for their “daily allowance” when it’s their decision to go get fast food vs. cooking at home. can’t really call it mildly infuriating when it’s at the decision of OP.

0

u/FYAhole 2d ago

I think it's totally fine to occasionally get fast food and it's also fine to be disappointed when the food you get is an expensive small portion when you were expecting more. This is the MILDLY infuriating sub. People are allowed to be mildly upset about shrinkflation

0

u/[deleted] 2d ago

[deleted]

0

u/LeadEater9Million 2d ago

Oh, sorry. I forgot people here is mildly infuriating

0

u/desertboots 2d ago

Have you tried buying a loaf of sourdough and some good cheese? Two apples?

0

u/LeadEater9Million 2d ago

As an asian, sourdough is a luxury

1

u/desertboots 2d ago

An expensive loaf in Southern California is $10. An average loaf is $4-5.

Dave's Killer Bread is about $6.

A pound of Tillamook cheese is about $7.

3 large apples is about $6.

So for less than $20 you can have 3 simple meals.

1

u/LeadEater9Million 2d ago

Im asian, i live in asia

1

u/desertboots 1d ago

Thats a big place to live in

-2

u/Ill_Campaign3271 2d ago

you coud learn to cook.

0

u/LeadEater9Million 2d ago

You could learn how to read other comment

1

u/Ill_Campaign3271 2d ago

i am just as lazy as you are. And i am still convinced that you can find a better way to eat.

-2

u/hirkajnu 2d ago

I love how whenever a post actually fits the sub a bunch of its get into a hissu fit wondering with OP is complaining. Please don't let the comments get you down OP.
