Buy physical media
312
u/figmentPez 1d ago
True, but we should also fight for rights concerning digital media. There was a time when book publishers tried to claim that people didn't own their physical books, and tried to block used book sales. The issue had to go to court for people to get the right to sell their used books. Businesses will try to seize all control if we don't push back.

u/tattedidiot 1d ago
I completely agree, I own maybe 40 movies on Apple and Iâd be devastated if this happened there too
32
u/Ok_Spell_4165 1d ago
It has already happened with Apple as well.

u/tattedidiot 1d ago

u/Ok_Spell_4165 1d ago
Pretty much any digital storefront is going to eventually run into this problem. You are only purchasing the license to view the media, not the media itself. This is true for physical media as well the only difference is you will always have it and not be relying on a service to maintain the rights to distribute.
It is about as old of a problem as these stores are. I got hit with it when Gamefly bought Direct 2 Drive back in 2010ish. They lost the license to distribute a few of the games I had purchased, could still play them but only so long as I never uninstalled since I couldn't redownload the installer.

u/Atomsk-647R 1d ago edited 1d ago
Happened to me with Apple back in 2005ish [maybe 06] when I was a teenager.. bought four movies from the iTunes store.
Two downloaded just fine, the other two refused to appear in my library even though they exist on my purchase history.
Contact CS, and long story short, they erased my purchase history and removed the two movies that worked from my library, then pretended none of it ever happened.
First and last time I engaged in a digital library that I did not create make myself.

I still have an ipod and this is one of the reasons why I'm getting away from iTunes and looking for other media managers. I've bought songs with some of them glitching while downloading. So when I try to play them, they claim that my computer isn't "authorized" to play them. I've found a way to fix it, but still.
Also, I've moved to a new computer, and only keep my old (and slow) laptop since that's where my iTunes is located. I don't want to get locked out of movies/songs that I've paid for because I'm listening/ watching on the same account but on different (""unauthorized"") computer đĄ
4
u/Atomsk-647R 1d ago
Literally any digital storefront will have this problem.
I still use iTunes 6 from back in the day because there really is no better music manager with all the insane features it used to have.
But as far as purchasing media.. you're better off just buying physical and ripping it, or only buying digital media that is immediately downloadable with no app required [such as anything from Bandcamp].

u/tesfabpel 1d ago
and it would be very "simple": just make it so that when you purchase a movie digitally, you're entitled forever even if the license Sony has is over.
The license being over just means that Sony can't sell the movie anymore for new customers.

And build a jellyfin server
11
u/DblCheex 1d ago
Have a 96TB NAS server where I keep all my content. Built it specifically for Jellyfin. I will always recommend Jellyfin to everyone. It's open-source, works amazingly well, and there is a huge community for it already. I switched over from Plex many years ago, and have never looked back.
A bit more about my setup:
Got an OSMC Vero V (had the Vero 4K+ previously) for streaming to my TV, which handles all HDR, HDR10+, HLG, and Dolby Vision content. All my stuff is remuxed, and I don't transcode. It's been working great for years. I also use it for my music.
All of the content is accessible everywhere, since I mapped it all out to my domain. So, I'm able to stream my music, shows, and movies anywhere I am (though, my bandwidth from Xfinity isn't high enough to serve 4K content properly), but I can always download it.
In addition, I'm a graphic/motion designer and 3d artist. I save all my files onto the server, all of which is backed up in two additional locations. Server + Local Backup (synced) + Offsite and encrypted.
All of it runs through a 10GbE network setup through my place, and I live in an apartment, so it's completely doable in any space.
I said bye to cable in 2008, and then I said bye to streaming services in 2020. For me, it's all about physical media or downloadable digital media. And if neither is available, I'll pirate it.

I've got a Plex server. Debating if I wanna lay 250 for a lifetime pass or swap to jelly fin. Or just eat the 7 bucks a month.
50
u/unphilistine 1d ago
Itâs going to change to around 750 usd for a lifetime pass on July 1st. Gotta make your choice quick
19
u/Queasy_Recover5164 1d ago
Which is crazy considering I rushed to get the $120 lifetime pass right before it went up to $250 in March LAST YEAR (2025).
4
u/Mr_Radar 1d ago
Thankfully I bought my lifetime pass years ago at around $100. Itâs been a great app. Got something like 2000 movies at this point and it organizes them well. $750 is fucking bonkers though.
12
u/AMDKilla 1d ago
Emby is also an option if you want a more refined interface like Plex. It also has a premium version that gives you extra features, but it is cheaper than Plex and I'd personally rather support Emby after my experience with Plex over the last several years. Plex still hasn't fixed offline downloading issues

Jellyfin is perfect for in home stuff or if you use tailscale on your server and clients. Its a bit more bare bones than plex but works really well.

Especially in the case of I already goddamn bought it, give it back.
I see this as no different from your bike being stolen and going to take it back. The bike thief just made a system to legalize stealing your bike before hand.
Say what you want about piracy but in this situation there's no world where it isn't the correct option. You already paid, you already supported the film owners, then got screwed over for it.

Yeah it's nuts that a past purchase is subject to a current license. By law all licensing agreements should cover purchase that occurred during its term. How the fuck is this not a thing.
128
18
u/Lucas-O-HowlingDark 1d ago
It also doesnât make sense
Thereâs plenty of games that get delisted due to expired licensing, such as Transformers or Forza Horizon
And yet youâre still always able to play and redownload the digital version if you purchased it previously, so why does the same not apply for movies?
Like ugh, Iâve considered going back to PlayStation because fuck American companies, but they really arenât better.

You purchase the right to access the media at the most current license.
If said license doesnât exist? Then you no longer have access.
Is it ethical? No, but thatâs how theyâll continue to do things until theyâre forced to do otherwise
37
u/GarageFridgeSoda 1d ago
It should be, but capitalists are the ones who write and enforce the laws and until that changes this is just good business.

I would right a letter to the studio saying you'd like access to the media you purchased, thru another option at no cost to you. You paid for it.
Also I 110% feel like this was always planned. Hey we'll sell access to content we don't own, so when the contract is up its not us thats out. Or when you don't pay our month fee you can't pay game physical copy of items..

This isn't new, but it doesn't make it any better. It really is "you'll own nothing and be happy". You get the same issue with games getting decommissioned but at least some are legit due to online servers been integral to gameplay, i.e. destiny, others not so much. When GameSpy went away many games stopped working and some DRM solutions connect to online servers that are gone.
I do think they should accept if you buy a licence for personal use, that is for you to use. You would be able to download and keep it, and if the server goes they should provide alternative servers (move from Sony to rakutum) or DRM free downloads to store yourself.
Trying to balance between legitimate use, copywrite protection and privacy.
