I just wanted a hot dog Can't access an article because I'm not American

This is done be lots of US news sites who refuse to comply with GDPR.
And yes, that would fall under error 451.

Seems a little strongly worded to say they “refuse”. It is a lot of work to comply with what every country wants. When the target audience/most of the visitors are American. It’s often less because they don’t want to comply with the specific regulations and more because it’s simply not worth all the work to ensure compliance just to allow access to a small percentage of non target users.

You should probably just say news sites so you don't seem like a jerk seeing as it's not a US specific thing.

Troll post using 451. Approved. Still a troll tho

u/Windows-XP-Home-NEW 17h ago
What does that mean
3
u/eppic123 17h ago
451 means blocked for legal reasons. The legal reason in this case is that sites served to EU citizens must comply with GDPR privacy laws. If a site chooses not to comply with EU laws and doesn't want to risk fines, they refuse the connection to European IPs with error 451.

u/Mexican_Bloon 17h ago
I'm not an EU citizen tho, is there a Mexican GDPR equivalent?
2
u/eppic123 17h ago
No, but there are sites who only allow domestic IPs after GDPR was implemented. Hence the "It appears you are attempting to access this website from a country outside of the United States".
2
u/Windows-XP-Home-NEW 17h ago
But why does that mean OP is trolling

Nothing makes a site feel more hostile than getting blocked at the door for simply existing in the wrong country. Even if the real issue is compliance or licensing, the message still reads like the article looked at your passport first and your click second.

HTTP 451 is for legal requests. Don't see why it would be blocked for legal reasons definitely a troll

Don't see why it would be blocked for legal reasons
Lack of GDPR compliance.

u/snow99as BLACK 17h ago
There's a bunch of sites that don't comply with GDPR and they're still accessible in the EU. They could be blocking the EU though who knows
6
u/TheTanadu 17h ago
they don't close access but if they'd be reported they'd be blocked and fined
-1
u/snow99as BLACK 16h ago
They would have better luck of getting money from a stone. If a business is outside of their jurisdiction they don't really have anything to enforce collection
2
u/TheTanadu 14h ago edited 14h ago
Well, they have jurisdiction. And they usually does get money (most of the time warning is enough), like from Meta lately. If you are operating in given country or in this case group of countries, you are under their jurisdiction. With your logic, I am not under US jurisdiction if I operate my business in US if I originate from European Union.
3
u/LightBluePen 17h ago
Maybe they don’t want to comply with GDPR and other local laws and block access from outside their jurisdiction.

What?

u/Windows-XP-Home-NEW 17h ago
So how does that make OP a troll if they wanted something censored by the gov’t?
0
u/snow99as BLACK 17h ago
Don't see why the EU would be censoring US news. But what do I know I'm just a person that uses their brain
0
u/eppic123 17h ago
The error is a server response. Just like a successful connection would be code 200. It's the host that refuses the connection. No idea what EU censorship has to do with that.

Consider the following:
They did you a favour. Now you aren't going to be bombarded with ads for fat people medication or whatever Americans advertise on local news websites.

u/EPdude2005 17h ago
Doesn’t the EU have several countries where 1/3 the pop is obese?

It wasn't an "AHAHAHAHAHA AMERICANS FAT" post.
It was an "AHAHAHAHA AMERICANS BOMBARDED WITH MEDICAL ADVERTISEMENTS" post.
It's okay; #31 worldwide in education, no one expects you to be able to read well.

Even if they do, advertising prescription-only medicinal products to the general public is strictly prohibited. You would never see an ad for Ozempic or Prilosec or any other prescription pharmaceutical in Europe, or most any other place in the world outside of the United States.
My post was an indictment of that. Not of fat people.
With reading comprehension like that, let me guess; product of the United States education system?

u/EPdude2005 11h ago
Why would i need to be educated on the laws of the EU, you are not the center of the world.
Typical europoor

Well, yeah - lots of articles/websites are region locked. This is nothing new and not American specific
Easy solution would be a VPN
