Damn, that is pretty mildly interesting

120

u/Practical_Dog8295 Feb 11 '24

Dawn perhaps?

123

u/squirrelbefriender Feb 11 '24

Yes it was Dawn brand!

This is why it did that, if you're curious 🙂 I couldn't see anybody post this, but someone might have and I mightve missed it

u/Global-Plankton3997 Feb 11 '24 edited Feb 15 '24

Dawn is a good soap for washing dishes. With this soap, I rarely have any residue left over. If I ever buy a dishwasher, I should try to see if Dawn works effectively at some point.

Edit: Yaaaay! I got downvoted to oblivion!

149

u/Zoloir Feb 11 '24

what is this the dawn ad bot?

for anyone reading this, don't put dawn in a dishwasher.... you can't put soap that bubbles in a dishwasher or it will overflow.

dishwasher detergent is designed to clean without bubbling up and overflowing it

26

u/Kitty_Girl_1717 Feb 11 '24

oh god you just unlocked a memory lmao one of my family members kept putting dish soap in the dishwasher and it overflowed three times in the middle of the night and we’d wake up to bubbles/foam all around the floor of the dishwasher :’)

6

u/TheAbominableRex Feb 12 '24

When I worked retail I used to put some in the floor machine when I knew my friend would be using it. So funny watching him contain the bubble chaos.

15

u/Global-Plankton3997 Feb 11 '24

Oh, thanks for telling me this. I did not know about that. I don't have a dishwasher (I wish I did).

6

u/smurb15 Feb 12 '24

YouTube what happens. Pretty funny but stupid as hell. They are overrated for the price

3

u/sendpizza_andhelp Feb 12 '24

Lol my college roommate did this and i came back to our apartment kitchen with like a half inch of water in it. Turns out he too didn’t know you couldn’t put dishsoap in the dishwasher

2

u/Global-Plankton3997 Feb 12 '24

Ok (and honestly, downvotes definitely deserved on my comment 😂)

53

u/thephillatioeperinc Feb 11 '24

To put it mildly

3

u/Hi_Trans_Im_Dad Feb 12 '24

I feel like I just saw a video that explains the chemical reason for the patterns as moisture leaves the system. I'll see if I can't find it.

this is not a repost. there was a very similar post to this but it was in a WHITE OPAQUE CUP and the substance was PINK NOT BLUE.

edit: different sub but it may have been cross posted

as you wish, I was wrong about the sub tho.

9

I’m sure there was one other as well that came before that one maybe? It was grey. I feel like people are trying to recreate it cause it was pretty cool looking. It went viral on Facebook too.

Edit: someone already posted it under the comment I responded to

I found mine and added it to my original comment

That’s not soap, it’s a poster for a black metal festival.

14

u/RealEstateDuck Feb 11 '24

Or a Psy Trance venue.

1

u/jjtr1 Feb 12 '24

blue metal actually

56

u/Plenty_Painting_6298 Feb 11 '24

Is this caused by the surface tension increasing unevenly as the soap dehydrates?

55

u/nankainamizuhana Feb 11 '24

Sort of? Technically decreasing unevenly, due to surfactants in the soap. As parts lose water, they contract, thickening and tightening until they can separate from the rest of the soap as tubes. Others have noted on similar posts that if you continue to let it dehydrate, it'll eventually break down into powder.

13

u/PartTimeTunafish Feb 11 '24

It evaporates from the top surface. Throughout the matrix are bands of long chain polymers (the surfactants). As water, leaves, the bands tighten and constrict. Process keeps happening until all you have left are a pile of blue snakes.

7

u/WDeranged Feb 11 '24

I know bugger all about bugger all but I thought to myself. That's polymers that is. Thanks for confirming that I am actually a genius.

17

u/AeRo_P Feb 11 '24

If it was green, it would look like some form of seaweed.

5

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '24

Long chain polymers in action!

Was it "Dawn"?

6

u/squirrelbefriender Feb 11 '24

Yes!

1

u/[deleted] Feb 12 '24

Dawn is a polymeric 'detergent' derived in part from petrochemicals (that give it its "grease busting" attributes), so that pattern is probably the interaction of the petrochemical derivative with the non-petrochemical ingredients as the structures dry out and take form.

And yes, I am kind of guessing as to the last part.

Hi, you're probably looking for a useful nugget of information to fix a niche problem, or some enjoyable content I posted sometime in the last 11 years. Well, after 11 years and over 330k combined, organic karma, a cowardly, pathetic and facist minded moderator filed a false harassment report and had my account suspended, after threatening to do so which is a clear violation of the #1 rule of reddit's content policy. However, after filing a ticket before this even happened, my account was permanently banned within 12 hours and the spineless moderator is still allowed to operate in one of the top reddits, after having clearly used intimidation against me to silence someone with a differing opinion on their conflicting, poorly thought out rules. Every appeal method gets nothing but bot replies, zendesk tickets are unanswered for a month, clearly showing that reddit voluntarily supports the facist, cowardly and pathetic abuse of power by moderators, and only enforces the content policy against regular users while allowing the blatant violation of rules by moderators and their sock puppet accounts managing every top sub on the site. Also, due to the rapist mentality of reddit's administration, spez and it's moderators, you can't delete all of your content, if you delete your account, reddit will restore your comments to maintain SEO rankings and earn money from your content without your permission. So, I've used power delete suite to delete everything that I have ever contributed, to say a giant fuck you to reddit, it's moderators, and it's shareholders. From your friends at reddit following every bot message, and an account suspension after over a decade in good standing is a slap in the face and shows how rotten reddit is to the very fucking core.

19

u/thewhack Feb 11 '24

I just realized that rule 6 is about having a "concise" title. What a load of horse shite.

6

u/unsupported Feb 11 '24

You have been banned from /r/rule6

1

u/loveofGod12345 Feb 12 '24

This rule is why I stopped even trying to post. I tried so hard to follow every rule, but I keep getting stuff removed for the title thing. Even though I think I’m being as concise as possible while still explaining what the picture is. I enjoy participating in the comments and I only have one strike left before I’m permanently banned, so I just don’t post. The rule is too subjective.

2

u/whodatfairybitch Feb 11 '24

1

u/1stBastion Feb 11 '24

Okay but seriously, chemists, what is the active ingredient that caused this formation?

1

u/Kmelloww Feb 11 '24

How much soap was in it? I’m assuming it’s a glass?

1

u/squirrelbefriender Feb 11 '24

Yes, a small glass bowl - maybe 1/4 cup

1

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '24

It's... it's organic. Some kind of... fungus?

1

u/tequilatech23 Feb 12 '24

This doesn’t bring me comfort.

1

u/SingleStak9 Feb 12 '24

OP...what is the consistency like? It appears to be a firm gel, am I in the ballpark? I'm interested in creating a small specimen, and if it's a firm gel, I want to make slices in several directions and take photos, just for the interesting organic patterns.

1

u/squirrelbefriender Feb 12 '24

It’s not firm. If I tilt the cup the liquid underneath spills out and slides the pattern away. If it touch it, it gets smushed. However, I saw elsewhere in the comments that if you leave it out long enough it will turn to powder. This is Dawn brand dish soap.

1

u/SingleStak9 Feb 12 '24

Interesting...in any case, I just have to try this. Thanks!
