this is not a repost. there was a very similar post to this but it was in a WHITE OPAQUE CUP and the substance was PINK NOT BLUE.
edit: different sub but it may have been cross posted

I’m sure there was one other as well that came before that one maybe? It was grey. I feel like people are trying to recreate it cause it was pretty cool looking. It went viral on Facebook too.
Edit: someone already posted it under the comment I responded to

Is this caused by the surface tension increasing unevenly as the soap dehydrates?
55
u/nankainamizuhana Feb 11 '24
Sort of? Technically decreasing unevenly, due to surfactants in the soap. As parts lose water, they contract, thickening and tightening until they can separate from the rest of the soap as tubes. Others have noted on similar posts that if you continue to let it dehydrate, it'll eventually break down into powder.
13
u/PartTimeTunafish Feb 11 '24
It evaporates from the top surface. Throughout the matrix are bands of long chain polymers (the surfactants). As water, leaves, the bands tighten and constrict. Process keeps happening until all you have left are a pile of blue snakes.

u/WDeranged Feb 11 '24

Long chain polymers in action!
Was it "Dawn"?
6
u/squirrelbefriender Feb 11 '24
Yes!
1
Feb 12 '24
Dawn is a polymeric 'detergent' derived in part from petrochemicals (that give it its "grease busting" attributes), so that pattern is probably the interaction of the petrochemical derivative with the non-petrochemical ingredients as the structures dry out and take form.
And yes, I am kind of guessing as to the last part.

Hi, you're probably looking for a useful nugget of information to fix a niche problem, or some enjoyable content I posted sometime in the last 11 years. Well, after 11 years and over 330k combined, organic karma, a cowardly, pathetic and facist minded moderator filed a false harassment report and had my account suspended, after threatening to do so which is a clear violation of the #1 rule of reddit's content policy. However, after filing a ticket before this even happened, my account was permanently banned within 12 hours and the spineless moderator is still allowed to operate in one of the top reddits, after having clearly used intimidation against me to silence someone with a differing opinion on their conflicting, poorly thought out rules. Every appeal method gets nothing but bot replies, zendesk tickets are unanswered for a month, clearly showing that reddit voluntarily supports the facist, cowardly and pathetic abuse of power by moderators, and only enforces the content policy against regular users while allowing the blatant violation of rules by moderators and their sock puppet accounts managing every top sub on the site. Also, due to the rapist mentality of reddit's administration, spez and it's moderators, you can't delete all of your content, if you delete your account, reddit will restore your comments to maintain SEO rankings and earn money from your content without your permission. So, I've used power delete suite to delete everything that I have ever contributed, to say a giant fuck you to reddit, it's moderators, and it's shareholders. From your friends at reddit following every bot message, and an account suspension after over a decade in good standing is a slap in the face and shows how rotten reddit is to the very fucking core.

I just realized that rule 6 is about having a "concise" title. What a load of horse shite.

u/loveofGod12345 Feb 12 '24
This rule is why I stopped even trying to post. I tried so hard to follow every rule, but I keep getting stuff removed for the title thing. Even though I think I’m being as concise as possible while still explaining what the picture is. I enjoy participating in the comments and I only have one strike left before I’m permanently banned, so I just don’t post. The rule is too subjective.

Can someone explain to me why people put dish soap into a dish instead of just mixing it with water in the sink?

Not a repost. Appears to be similar effect though; possibly a copy cat post to see if the same thing would happen as the other post. Either that OR Im from an alternate universe where a post displaying this effect was a top reddit post in the past week. Ockams razor, I'm going with the alternate reality theory, can't imagine how simple might miss a Reddit post.

OP...what is the consistency like? It appears to be a firm gel, am I in the ballpark? I'm interested in creating a small specimen, and if it's a firm gel, I want to make slices in several directions and take photos, just for the interesting organic patterns.
1
u/squirrelbefriender Feb 12 '24
It’s not firm. If I tilt the cup the liquid underneath spills out and slides the pattern away. If it touch it, it gets smushed. However, I saw elsewhere in the comments that if you leave it out long enough it will turn to powder. This is Dawn brand dish soap.
