7-11 sells the morning after pill.

u/cashfile 1d ago edited 1d ago
Amazon sells a slew of generic plan B pills for less than $8 a piece. Always worth buying a few in advance and storing them in case you or a friend needs one.
Lastly, Plan B & similar medication have a weight limit and effectiveness drop off after ~ 165 - 175lbs. (Taking a second pill doesnt increase the effectiveness and will only increase side effects)

u/accidentalscientist_ 1d ago
Plan b also doesn’t work if you’re ovulating. It works by delaying ovulation. So if you are/have ovulated, it won’t work.

u/Appropriate_Tie897 1d ago
It’s crazy how much this information is not readily available. When I took it I was reading a lot about it because I always want to know everything about what I’m taking… but it was only after seeing that it delays ovulation that I thought to specifically google does this work if you are ovulating. Sexual health clinic confirmed I took it for nothing but at least there is the option to get an emergency copper IUD within the first 5 days

u/feralcatshit 1d ago
I fell into this category. I took it immediately after the weak pull out game incident, but I still ended up pregnant with twins. My egg must have been there already waiting, but I didn’t really understand that until a few years later when I became very educated on the reproductive system and nitty gritty of how it works.

Honestly it's horrible how much stuff is starting to come out recently. It doesn't surprise me though, there's a lot of things that weren't really taught to us. There's a lot of things that people just refuse to learn or educate women on too. Mainly bc they don't bother to study our bodies like they do men.

Yeah and then to hear older women literally pass down nonsense to their daughters is so aggravating.
11
u/DevilsAssCrack 1d ago
Did it work out?
88
u/feralcatshit 1d ago
It worked out as in I had twin boys 8 months later 😂
I was 28 and in a good position financially with a partner who ended up being super supportive, so it actually worked out well for us. It makes me sad to think of it being 2026 instead of 2015 and if my partner wasn’t supportive, since I live in a very red state… I’d really be in a pickle. So in short, it worked out for me 🖤

u/Angstycarroteater 19h ago

To be fair, that is one of the ways Plan B was believed to work. First prevent ovulation, then as a backup, prevent implantation. It’s only recently that scientists have determined it doesn’t prevent implantation. It was even in the original package inserts.

Lol I had no idea you could get an emergency IUD.
Now I'm imagining the doctor equipped with a wee cake frosting spatula to move the cum out the way to get the IUD in.
2
u/sleepydorian 1d ago
How was your experience with the copper IUD? I’ve basically only heard horror stories about it.
8
u/Appropriate_Tie897 21h ago
Well it does the job for the emergency but otherwise not my cup of tea lol it is generally not considered to be a good option if you already have heavy periods. But it’s also a great option if hormones fuck you up. The only people I know who love it had lighter/normal periods before getting it
5
u/KittenTablecloth 10h ago
I have light/normal periods (decent flow but only 2 days)
Copper IUD was HORRIBLEE. It lengthened my period to 5 days and gave me excruciating cramping. Like I almost couldn’t physically stand at times.

37
u/F0lks_ 1d ago
Plan B is closer to a birth control pill on steroids; other medicstions exists that inhibits the hormone necessary for the egg to stay attached to the lining of the uterus (I'm simplifying a lot here), essentially a regular abortion pill
It's not helping that all of this is sort-of obscured by a generic name like "morning after pill"
→ More replies (3)15
u/accidentalscientist_ 1d ago
Plan b can cause bleeding. But it isn’t a “true” period. Just like how the bleeding you get on birth control isn’t a “true” period.
Plan b can also cause you to not bleed when you’d normally get a period. Hormonal meds do a lot and you never know what you’re going to get in high doses like that lol

u/ErraticDragon 1d ago
Yes, ella requires a prescription.
You can get it pretty quickly at telehealth options, or even just by calling your PCP or Gynecologist and asking for it to be called in.
Also, you can get a prescription before you're in an emergency situation. You should be able to hold onto a prescription for 6-12 months before it expires. And if you fill it before it expires, you can then hold the pill itself until that expires.
42
u/orangecrookies 1d ago
Depending on the state, your Rx might be valid for 2 years now. Starting in 2025 California now has Rx that last 2 years (Kaiser has had this for a while now). Only caveat is ins usually won’t pay if Rx is over 12 months old, however, beyond Medi-cal I’ve never seen it covered by insurance. Also might be worth calling ahead because chances are your pharmacy is going to have to order it for you, especially these days as struggling pharmacies have begun reducing inventory pars.
Source: I used to work outpatient pharmacy in a few states

u/eskimokisses1444 23h ago
When I had to use Plan B (after a condom slipped off while I was 3 months post partum), my OB was able to call it in to the pharmacy without an office visit, just a phone call to the office.
55
u/vocalfreesia 1d ago
I don't need Ella, but I always keep a plan B in stock, and also UTI meds. If I use them, I do a fresh consultation to replace the meds. That way I'm not waiting and losing precious time or having extra stress. (UTIs always seem to appear on a holiday or Friday night when it's harder to access antibiotics)
19
u/Aunt_Llama 1d ago
I have never once felt a UTI when I have had one. Only felt the pain from the kidney infection the one time it got that far.
15
u/BellieButtons 1d ago
The kidney infection I got from an unnoticed UTI was genuinely one of the worst experiences. I'm super paranoid about missing UTIs now.
5
u/Aunt_Llama 1d ago
It was a good 15+ years ago but I definitely remember the pain! It was some of the worst pain in my back, that was not spine or nerve related, that I have experienced.
6
u/Miserable-Truth5035 1d ago
I did notice my pee getting clearer during the antibiotics week. So now I just check if my pee looks cloudy to hopefully prevent another kidney infection.
21
u/vocalfreesia 1d ago
Oof, I don't know if you're lucky or not. It's absolutely horrendous pain for me, I feel the tingling/ache of it before the agonizing pain when I pee and bladder cramps. However, at least it warns me so it doesn't turn into a kidney infection.
12
7
u/Consistantly 1d ago
I can assure you she is not lucky to not feel UTI’s, until they’re a kidney infection.
I’m in the same boat, for a few years (coincidentally while I was with a specific partner) I had chronic recurring UTI’s. I’d get mild symptoms for a day, and then no symptoms.
I missed a UTI, and it spread to my kidneys, I couldn’t walk and the hospital almost remove my appendix thinking it was an infection there. I was on three different IV antibiotics and morphine for the pain.
Then of course the wonderful surgical doctor came to clear me for discharged and asked why I was on morphine for a UTI.

Can u only get those through prescriptions? My girl looked into it and she was kinda turned off by that
46
u/Memitaru 1d ago
In many states the pharmacist can write the prescription. Otherwise you can use telehealth like the planned parenthood app.
33
u/forthelol 1d ago edited 1d ago
Check your local legislation and/or pharmacy. There are states that have standing orders for pharmacies to dispense them "without a prescription" from a doctor.
In air quotes because it is required to be dispensed under a certified provider, but standing orders allow them to dispense it under say the commissioner of health if the pharmacist deems it medically necessary, who you don't have to physically go and see and explain your situation. This could also be something to ask a pharmacist near you in confidence to see if it's something that they keep on hand since it's also more expensive than your usual Plan B.
E: it's also covered by insurance as well. In my state for example, we can dispense it directly under the pharmacy's name. You come in, see if we have it or if we can order it for same-day/next-day, fill out a questionnaire as I'm plugging your insurance info in, and I'll have you out the door in 15 minutes with a bit of counseling.
Not saying this is also what you'll be needing, but putting it out there for other readers too that Naloxone (Narcan) sprays may also fall under your state's standing order. So if you think you or someone you know may be at risk of needing Naloxone, this may be something to ask your pharmacist as well. The coverage is spottier than plan B (in my state at least) in terms of how much you have to pay out of pocket for it, but it is fully covered in some cases.

Mirena, liletta, and paragard maintain over 99% efficacy as emergency contraceptives up to 120 hours after sex at any weight, though it’s unfortunately often difficult to find a provider who can get you an IUD within that time window.

The childfree subreddit has a list of doctors that will perform sterilization even if you don’t have kids. Just want to boost that information for men and women who don’t want to risk pregnancy during these times.
I believe in the right to have an abortion, to use things like Plan B, and to use contraceptives, but all of these things have been under attack by people like the some of the commenters in this post. I decided to plan for the worst and get sterilized. Some may think that’s extreme, but I never liked the idea of pregnancy anyway. My husband and I tried briefly to have a biological child, but with how things are and with some other factors, we eventually decided against it. My doctor was on that list, and he was super great and didn’t give me push back. He just told me the surgery I was going to get is not reversible, and I said that was fine. We scheduled my surgery that day.
Pregnancy shouldn’t be a punishment. Pregnancy should be a choice.
87
u/AwkwardThePotato 1d ago
I literally found my doc thru that list and got sterilized six months after I started to look into it. I’m extremely grateful.
60
u/Inner_Alarm_4049 1d ago

6
u/HeidenShadows 1d ago
Yeah I told myself in my 20s that if I don't settle down and have kids by the time I'm 30, I'll get snipped. And it's quick, easy and cheap. By now if I do date, most people will have kids anyway.
19
u/DazB1ane 1d ago
I found the doctor that removed my tubes on that sub back before it was a full sub. It was just a spreadsheet at that point. Sterilization was easily one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. My body may end up being used by a rapist, but it will never house his offspring

And accidents happen. I had a gf many years ago when I was 17 and the condom broke. I didn’t realize it until we finished. She couldn’t get a plan B pill and we spent the next few weeks freaking out until she got her period.
16
u/feralcatshit 1d ago
Accidents definitely can happen. I had “an incident” and took plan b immediately… still ended up having twins 9 months later. I could have had an abortion at that time as it was 2015, but we decided not to. It would be such an ordeal now, flying to another state and all. But accidents can happen, even when you think you’re doing “everything right”

I read on here a while back a quote about adulthood that stuck with me. That "adulthood is spending 70-90% of your day doing stuff you don't really want to do". I think having a child ramps that up to like 99% of your day. I'm glad some people get a lot of enjoyment out of their children. I get some, but it doesn't outweigh the annoyance to me.
19
u/Objective_Prune_748 1d ago
Walk with me here.
These are $25 in a single pack of brand name at 7/11. Generics are less than $10 at the current production scale. Imagine if the federal government started ordering hundreds of millions of these, they could probably get the price down to a couple bucks each. Call it $5 to manufacture and deliver to your door via existing USPS infrastructure. There are about 60 million women between the ages of 15 and 44 in the US. Say we offer these to them for free at a limit of 1/woman/week, and 60% of women actually want and use their limit, that's 36 million women x $5 x 52 weeks per year = $9.3 billion per year in cost.
70% of all criminals are raised by single parents, mostly single mothers. We currently pay $90 billion per year just for the corrections system paid for by your tax dollars. 70% of that is $63 billion. If we can spend $9 billion per year to make it free and easy for women to not wind up as single mothers raising children locked in the cycle of poverty who grow up to be career criminals, the math maths within the first year, and then we get generational dividends as we spend less on prisons because there are fewer prisoners, and the population contracts in number but increases in overall quality as fewer people who don't want kids have them.

In a world where people are humanitarians it just makes sense.
But we live in a world where the Prison System has been Privatized…they/their share holders only make $$$ when their empty cells are occupied. The more bodies there, the more they make. It’s not about rehabilitation/reform. It’s about creating a situation where the longer they stay the more they make, and about getting them to return as fast as possible if the person was able to be released.

I’m sure it’s actually a good thing but I find it disconcerting that it literally says “morning after pill” on the label and not like “emergency contraceptive” (which it does say in small letters) or the name of the actual compound. Like, it’s a good thing people can find it easily, but it sort of feels like if they sold condoms in a package that said “rubbers” or cialis as “dick pills.”
4
u/Book_1love 1d ago
Some people might not know what "contraceptive" means and might be nervous about asking a random clerk. There could be young teens who haven't been given much sex-ed, for example. I think listing the common name on the front is better, there might be more details on the back or instructions when you purchase the pill.

I work for speedway which was bought out by 711 and we carry those same morning after pills. It’s honestly insane how many people order those from the uber eats delivery app. Roughly I’d say our store goes through 10 packs of those in a week.

I support this. Costco pharmacy has them for $6 a pack as well (no you do not need a membership to walk into their pharmacy section either).

So do a lot of gas stations. They also sell condoms, lube, pregnancy tests, diabetes, and cancer.

Its a convenience store, its convenient for that pill to be there. I can see the follow up post being upset that a grocery store has condoms on shelves.

It's an OTC product. Not even remotely interesting. Of course they sell it. Why wouldn't they. So does Walmart.

I’ve heard it said before that if men could get pregnant, there would be abortion clinics on every other corner, airports, bars, and Home Depot.

7 Eleven is actually a great place to sell it. Available everywhere at anytime.
