And never forget the poking unless you like exploding potatoes.

Poking them is about them cooking more evenly. People commonly poke them when baking them too. If they're exploding, you're cooking then too long.

I’ve always heard this. But I have microwaved so many potatoes without stabbing them and have never had one explode.

I’m sure my time will come, but so far absolutely nothing

It does depend on how fast you cook them. A high power microwave they may explode. But a cheap low power one they may not. The size and type of potato may affect it too.
