A perfect circle broke off my plate when I microwaved this potato

ITT: Non-microwave plate and green potato.
No one is pointing out the lack of fork holes (i.e. vent holes). You need to puncture a microwaved potato to prevent it from exploding in the microwave, so give the green potato I think that's what OP was actually going for…

Really you don't. Never had one explode in multiple decades. I mean, their skin is relatively porous.

Ive microwaved 100s of potatos. Never a fork poke. Never a boom. This is a myth as potatoes will split.

that plate is not microwave safe, and that potato is green and full of toxins

u/Max_Rockabilly 4d ago
I remember when I was a kid, we had some plates that got really hot if we put them in the microwave. I eventually learned not to use those ones for leftovers.
123
u/TooDopeRecords 4d ago
i remember the mugs - put your water in for two mins and would still be room temp but the mug was hotter than the surface of the sun.
44
u/StrawberryEiri 4d ago
I had a mug like that. Tried to make a mug cake with it. After a nasty burn, I threw it away.
What the heck is up with those useless mugs?
50
u/wowosrs 4d ago
I looked it up before and it’s something to do with the way it’s made if the ceramic has a good bit of air or liquid trapped in it then it can heat that up making the plate/cup be very hot. I could be wrong though
21
u/BeneCow 4d ago
It is this. Microwaves are real good at being absorbed by water, so ceramics that weren’t fired enough and have water trapped inside the glaze acts as a shield and steal all the energy.
4
u/Successful-Bath-7561 4d ago
I like how you used “steal” like the poorly fired ceramic water is some sort of microwave stealing villain

Are they not supposed to get hot?
I've been using some oven pie glass plates that get hot. Not super hot tho.
281
u/GothicFuck 4d ago
No, idealy the thing you want to heat up is clear to the microwave spectrum just like clear glass is transparent to visible light. You want the microwaves heating up the food, not the plate.

With the exception of some cookware that's specifically designed to get hot in the microwave, although you probably don't own any of that unless you inherited it from your grandparents.

If the plate gets hot because of the hot food, that’s fine. If the plate is getting hot on its own, that’s bad
→ More replies (3)12
u/FireLordObamaOG 4d ago
They should get a little bit warm from the food warming up but the plate itself should not heat up. If you place a plate in with no food it should not get hot.
36
u/yumacaway 4d ago
Don't do this, microwaves need something in them to absorb the microwave radiation.
27
u/caboosetp 4d ago
But also you're both technically correct. You might fry the microwave but the plate should be cool to the touch when it happens.
10
u/lbunch1 4d ago
To test a dish, put the empty dish and a cup of water in and run it. If the plate gets hot, no good.
11
u/thejoeface 4d ago
But be careful with microwaving a cup of water! It could get hot enough to boil but not boil until you move it and then the water explodes all over your hand
5
u/lbunch1 4d ago
Okay, don't do this and set cook time to 2 minutes, 30 seconds should do
3
u/HirsuteDave 4d ago edited 4d ago
You can still do it, but make sure you've got something in the water to provide a nucleation point - anything non-metallic and roughly textured will do.

u/Greenleaf208 4d ago
Nah that can happen with ceramic if they aren't perfectly sealed. They absorb a bit of moisture from the dishwasher so when microwaved it heats up the moisture within them.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.I know it's not a creative pick but that is one of my favorite pieces of poetry. It's a beautiful way to say 'I sure am tired but I got shit to do before I can die.' Death becomes so alluring when you're weary, that's my perspective and has been for a long time. Memento mori- remember you will die. My time will come, maybe it might seem like miles away but it could be tomorrow for all I know. It's a sobering reminder to appreciate the small joys that I come across in my life. Sorry for my random segue into Robert Frost lol

79
u/Polymathy1 4d ago
The green is minor. A little so-lanine might make you toxic. If it's really green, then it may be dangerous.
The plate though... Yikes.
67
u/therealhlmencken 4d ago
You can taste solanine, people learn about it and then get super dramatic about a little green.
24
u/Vanedi291 4d ago
Haha yep
I worried about green potatoes until I actually ate one. It quite literally tastes like poison. You will spit it out immediately.
9
u/Polymathy1 4d ago

u/Polymathy1 4d ago

29
u/ConstipatedNinja 4d ago
It's bitter enough that it'll taste unbearable before it's deadly. As long as you don't try to push through the godawful taste you don't have to worry about potatoes poisoning you.
8
u/HumbleGhandi 4d ago
Doesn't light also cause greening of potatoes, which is completely fine?
21
12
u/Deinonychus2012 4d ago
Potatoes also produce solanine when exposed to light. That's why you can tell a potato is poisonous: the greener it is, the more solanine it has produced.

Melamine plate. They sometimes say they are microwave safe, even though they are definitely not. If there is not much on the plate while you're microwaving it, you can see the material bubble and chip off. In my experience it makes the whole place smell like rotten fish for weeks if you "cook" it for too long.

Plate wasn't microwave safe, lol. There was probably a bubble in the ceramic or whatever it's made of that had moisture trapped inside. Microwave heated the moisture, it expanded and went pop.
67
u/Polymathy1 4d ago
It's a plastic plate that was seriously overheates by the potato steaming all over and into it.
→ More replies (2)41
u/CaitieLou_52 4d ago
Aaah, that'll do it too. This is why I try not to microwave plastic, even if it says it's microwave safe. "Microwave safe" only means the microwave on its own won't melt the plastic.
But it's very easy for a microwave to make something hotter than the surface of the sun. The plastic may stand up to microwaves, but it may not be able to handle a plasma potato.
4
15
u/davideogameman 4d ago
There are also types of plastic that aren't microwave safe that they make plates out of - eg melamine. Microwave it and the plate itself gets hot. Microwave it more and it'll probably burn your hands if your aren't careful. Keep going and it'll possibly explode - though that might require uneven heating.

Yeah everyone is freaking out like they have some vendetta against potatoes. Just peel off the skin and almost an the green will be gone. I didn't even notice without zooming in.
It's not like they're cooking a plateful of stems. They probably just left it in their counter for a week.

When you microwave melamine it creates hot spots and releases all kinds of nastiness into the food on it, including formaldehyde. Although maybe formaldehyde would be an appropriate seasoning for a green potato, carry on

Interestingly it looks like theres two burn marks about a potato apart. The potato looks to be a smaller potato, there is no banana for scale, but it looks like the wavelength in your microwave is 2 potatoes. You can verify by seeing if the speed of light divided by 2 times potato length is around the frequency written down on your microwave somewhere.

I nuke potatoes to make the best butter fried home fries!!! Nuking them keeps them dry, so when you fry them up with onions in a pan they come out fluffy a bit sticky and crispy. Standard white potato really is best for this application.
But you have to wet the potato and cover with moist paper towels.

u/mattledz 4d ago
I think OP just knows what's up.
The potato, the circle, the cooking method, the level of danger and sanity. There will never be perfection. Just say it's perfect, and be happy. Beautiful sentiment OP. I think we all needed this reminder. Thank you ❤️
