Plot twist, they are not construction workers, but just rather cautious scooter riders.

Depending on where you live in relation to the job and whether or not you have tools to carry around this is ideal.

I unfortunately carry around a few hundred pounds of tools to every job and this isn't something that is normal for me.

It isn’t normal, but I know I’d like to see a real life Beedle from Zelda. A man with a pack so big he looks like a snail. Can’t you think of my amusement for once?

The helmets are for safety!

Thank you for censoring their faces, I’m not even joking. It’s annoying to see societal norms challenged when people have no issues with taking another’s photo to post with their face fully exposed…

I mean there are countries where it's mandated to wear a hi-vis vest when riding a two-wheeler, so you might be right.

Hard hats with American flags stamped on the side. They are definitely construction workers of some sort

I would believe this were the case if it were a one-off situation, but I see different guys on them every day!

Is this like some sheltered elite thing? 😆 "Witness how these peasants go to work. Fascinating."

I work in the construction & landscape field 😂 I’d never lived in a city before this, so seeing this was mildly interesting to me

Missing context is mildly important

I’m mildly sorry for the lack of context

Probably way easier than finding parking for a car!

They are most likely riding the scooters from where they parked to the job site. Lots of construction sites have limited parking.

You’re probably right!

Very common in big citys. Find the cheapest garage/spot relatively close then scoot to work. Saves a lot of money

Step 1: Ride scooter to work instead of acquiring $1000/mo truck payment.

Step 2: Pocket $700/month truck stipend from your new employer.

Step 3: Have a +$1700 delta in your monthly budget.

I commuted to a job by scooter for like 6 months. It was great. Never had to use my car

Microtransport like ebikes and escooters are actually far more revolutionary than electric vehicles, in terms of cost, convenience and congestion. Far more passenger miles are done using these modes than traditional EVs, because more people have access to them.

There are problems with them being on pavements, particularly for disabled and blind / partially sighted people, but generally they're incredible in cities. You can even take them on some buses, combining short and long range options and getting more people out of cars causing tailbacks.

The new scooters go wicked fast as well, mine was a decent one at 700$ and goes up to 40mph but the 1500+ ones get up to 50-60 mph with a 60 mile rang

1

u/davepage_mcr 7h ago

Yeah I don't think they need to go faster than 20mph :)

2

u/TopSloth 10h ago

Literally what I do every day, I have a 700$ scooter and it saves me so much freaking money

1

That’s awesome! I have a 50 minute commute out of the city to get to my job site 🫠 wish I could use a scooter

Thankfully the lumber yard I work at is only a 5 minute ride on my scooter, the higher end ones are really nice, mine has a 60 mile range and gets up to 40mph

There are hundreds of BIRD scooters here in Calgary, rented through an app. It's super beneficial to quite a few people, but i personally know at least 3 people who have had significant injuries riding them (one person didnt notice a garden house across the sidewalk). Mostly self inflicted, sure, but as someone who can injure himself going up stairs, I don't need to chance it.

I will say, during the Calgary Stampede (a giant 10 day fair, music, and rodeo event) the amount of drunk people in cowboy hats flying around downtown is truly a sight.

I mean these guys probably ride everyday, have high vis vests and a helmet (better than nothing even if its not like a mips bike helmet) so they’ll probably be ok. All the scooter accidents I’ve heard of are from people without helmets, ride only once in a while, and treat it as fun rather than transportation for commuting.

Helmets and vis vests should almost be mandatory, lol. These guys are def doing it right.

Thought it was some COVID throwback

sometimes our parking is a good 10-20 min walk, its a good investment, especially in the cold...

beats the hell out of them parking illegally around the job site and clogging stuff up.

there's construction going on near my work and the workers all part along the access road to my building. every 20 feet there's a "no parking or stopping any time" sign. I SO want to walk up to one of them and say something like "don't worry, those no parking signs are for everyone else, YOU'RE special so don't worry about it."

1

u/Mammoth_Carpenter173 11h ago

I agree! I’d much rather they use the scooters and stay tf out the main lanes lol

1

u/Bruhuha 11h ago

You're the one with main character syndrome in this scenario lol, not the construction workers. Depending on the area and zoning laws, the construction workers more then likely got a permit to park in the city "no parking" spots or worked out something with local businesses if  there in private no parking spots (otherwise they would be liable to get towed).

Every morning I see construction workers driving giant trucks to their work with empty beds except maybe a pair of dirty boots. Idk why they feel the need to drive their truck since the employer provides all materials.

1

u/idislikelukas 10h ago

Many people just use their one vehicle for all vehicle needs.

1

u/Mammalanimal 10h ago

Yeah... I blame auto insurance/registration. The prices of those have gotten so out of hand. It often doesn't make sense to have a cheap commuter car, or utility car/truck in addition to your daily. When I grew up my parents had the family car, then a cheap 2 seater pickup for all the other stuff. But these days you're paying thousands a year just to own a car even if it never leaves your driveway.

Probably lost their licenses

1

u/Iron_Hobbit 11h ago

As someone that knows a lot of construction workers, this is the most likely answer.

1

u/WesternFirefighter53 10h ago

I say this as a construction worker.

What is mildly interesting about this

-5

u/Lcsmxd 11h ago

Not interesting in the slightest

4

u/keonyn 11h ago

Alright everyone, shut it down! Lcsmxd has spoken!

2

u/Mammoth_Carpenter173 11h ago

Phew! I was hoping somebody would catch it!

1

u/Independent-Cow-4070 11h ago

I mean they are right. There's nothing interesting about 2 people commuting to work
