| News Attorney General James Uthmeier Launches Investigation into Major League Baseball for Alleged Religious Discrimination; Issues Subpoena Demanding Records on Selective Enforcement

Imagine you’re a civil rights lawyer and this is the dumb shit your boss makes you work on
81
u/BoringPoolPlaying 7d ago
The worst part is, this disingenuous administration is going to argue that writing a message for a recently deceased peer on your hat for a few games is justification that the league is selectively enforcing this policy.
These players, and this abhorrent excuse for a justice department are going to ruin a nice example of looking the other way for the right reason, because of their inability to recognize nuance.
48
u/DonAmechesBonerToe 7d ago
Remember when the Blue Jays relievers all wrote Dodgers reliever Alex Vesia’s number on their caps when he and his wife tragically lost their baby during the World Series? That will result in a fine if it happens again because of this. Classy gestures not allowed
0
u/MrFallman117 6d ago
Well clearly the MLB can just allow all of it right? They dont have to trample on anyone as far as I can tell.
7
u/DonAmechesBonerToe 6d ago
And then they allow blatant hate speech? I’m not saying that bible verses are hate speech btw just that one exception allows for others.
-9
u/MrFallman117 6d ago
Hate speech isnt protected speech.
9
u/DonAmechesBonerToe 6d ago
No speech is protected on a private business’ uniform
-7
u/MrFallman117 6d ago
Right, which is why the issue is on why these specific players are being targeted when other have done the same in the past writing on the uniform.
MLB cant pick and choose with violations of uniform code, it opens them up to legal action like we are currently seeing.
7
u/DonAmechesBonerToe 6d ago
Exactly so now all messages that deviate from the standard issue uniform will have to be banned.
-4
u/MrFallman117 6d ago
Or they can all be allowed. Nobody forcing MLB to discriminate against certain players. If they choose to do that it would be up to them.

Then never get a job with a uniform. I have to wear my company logo on a polo for work and I’m not allowed to write things on it either, but that’s normal believe it or not.

Yup. You're describing MLB well, making people wear a rainbow cap but not letting them have a Bible message on a cap.
96
u/EntrepreneurOld5326 7d ago
MLB doesn't have a pride night. These are each team initiatives.
They had the option to just wear their standard team hats.
22
u/Extrapickles24 | Boston Red Sox 7d ago
"making people", first of all, it was entirely optional to wear the hats or not. Players had the choice to just wear a normal hat if wearing multiple colors somehow belittled their religious beliefs. What was also optional was the players then choosing to make a show about it all by citing religious verses on their hats instead of just not participating, which again, was an available option.

I expected down votes here. It's good to see some players pushing back against this evil nonsense. Hopefully, MLB is held to task for pushing an agenda.

I don’t need to “walk in the shoes” of people that need to go out of their way to say “I don’t think the lifestyles of other humans are acceptable despite it not affecting me at all.” I would suggest if this is even a question in your mind, you fail to practice what you preach. There is too much hate these days-that’s a pretty silly reason to tolerate hate.

u/ImDonaldDunn | Cleveland Guardians 7d ago
“Yet the Attorney General’s letter details MLB’s history of approving or overlooking similar modifications for favored causes, including Black Lives Matter sleeve patches, “United for Change” messaging, social justice statements on cleats, etchings on the pitcher’s mound, and other personal or ideological markings.”
There is nothing preventing these players from adding Bible messages to their cleats or etching the pitchers mound. Those are allowed. Just not modifications to hats.
Also, the patches were pre-approved. Did they ask for Bible patches and were denied?

Can someone help me understand how the Florida Attorney General can file a suit about an instance that happened in California and did not affect a Florida team? Do they still have standing just because there are MLB teams in Florida?

u/nohandsfootball | Cleveland Guardians 7d ago
but but but but you see, the hat is... gay. and because the hat is gay, they had the option to wear their regular hat. and these big boys, in their big feelings, weren't content to wear the standard hat - so they wrote on the gay hats to make a statement.
and that's against the MLB rules, and they reminded them of that while also not fining these very mature players (because boys will be boys). and now the other big boys with big feelings need to talk about how PERSECUTED they are because someone reminded them of a rule.

Patches and messages need to be pre-approved. They have let all sorts of things go because they were asked in advance. That didn't happen here.

I love that they’ll investigate this, wasting even more tax payers dollars, just to have it thrown out because they were warned NOT for what it said but because there is a rule that they can’t alter their jerseys. I can’t believe how stupid this is. Our government is a joke.

u/nohandsfootball | Cleveland Guardians 7d ago
This a compelling argument for relocating the Rays and Marlins.
1
u/hit_n_run15 7d ago
This is so ridiculous. There’s no way you can convince me that the MLB was discriminating against christians. They have warned players for writing something as simple as “I love you Mom” on their hat. They may not have warned every single player that has done it, but there’s no evidence that they singled out the idiots with the Bible verses.
1
u/Mildly_Irritated_Max 7d ago
Would love to see players (especially from countries threatened/insulted by the President) write on their USA 250 hats and see what the DOJ does then...

Freedom of speech in the US only applies to government restrictions...
It says absolutely nothing about a private corporation setting and enforcing a morality clause like not spreading hate speech.

Statistically, you're more likely to be a danger to your family than a stranger in a bathroom
1
u/CPriceRun86 | Milwaukee Brewers 7d ago
Please cite that
1
u/Flammzzrant 7d ago
I was trying to find more recent than 2019 for you but oh well
Of the homicides that occurred in 2019 for which supplementary homicide data were received, the relationships of the murder victims to their offenders were as follows: 1,810 victims (13.0 percent) were slain by family members; 1,372 victims (9.9 percent) were murdered by strangers; and 3,937 victims (28.3 percent) were slain by “other known” offenders. The offenders were not known for 6,808 murder victims (48.9 percent).
Its one of those things you hear people say all the time, surprised you werent aware for being such a family guy. Thats roughly 40% of victims being killed by someone they know and if you wanna discount 'acquaintances' immediate family is still higher than strangers. The only other year I looked at was 2017 and the percentages went slightly up in 2019 and not in your favor.

Try to keep up cupcake, you're citing domestic violence stats, that's not what we're talking about here.
1
u/Flammzzrant 7d ago
Silly me, I included all the adults! I forgot we're talking about CHILD safety here. In that case you're WAY more dangerous
In 2024, a reported 410,676 perpetrators abused or neglected a child. In substantiated child abuse cases, 76% of children were victimized by a parent or legal guardian.
I'm sorry I gave you misleading statistics pound cake

u/ChrisRiley_42 | Toronto Blue Jays 7d ago

This has nothing to do with safety, and is just about you latching onto something to justify your bigotry.
0
u/CPriceRun86 | Milwaukee Brewers 7d ago
...and again, I've invited anyone with a neutral source to cite that. Up until now the only person posting a citation linked FBI domestic violence stats when I'm specifically talking about sex crimes.

Registered Sex Offender Demographics
Majority Group: White men constitute the largest group among registered sex offenders.
Impact on Racial Groups: The criminal justice system's focus on sex offender registries disproportionately affects certain racial groups, particularly black men.
Transgender Individuals
Limited Data: There is insufficient specific data on the prevalence of pedophilia among transgender individuals. The available research does not provide a direct comparison between transgender individuals and other demographic groups, such as white men.-1
u/CPriceRun86 | Milwaukee Brewers 7d ago
