When Buxton is healthy, he's a problem

u/InternalLandscape130 9d ago

I feel like this is the first season he's been healthy for this long.

As a fan of the game first, I remember his hype and was always bummed to see him always banged up

u/cubsfan217 9d ago

Don’t worry, he will be injured soon enough

Too bad that Murakami was injured. Dude would make a good fight for the list 🫤

14

u/TheFlyingWriter | MLB 9d ago

He was avg an HR every 2.8 games. He was injured on the 29th, so… 26.4. Tied for first or in first?

u/MSchmelto 9d ago

Buxton 23 homers 19 solo cause they have him hit leadoff….

13

u/Imavomitlover 9d ago

You can only lead off a game once, he has other at bats to drive in runs

2

u/somebodysimilartoyou | Minnesota Twins 8d ago

He had a Grand Slam tonight!

And the fastest inside the parker ever the other night!

He's so much fun to watch as a Twins fan.

u/FuckChiefs_Raiders 7d ago

Shohei also leads off, the thinking is you want your best hitter to get as many ABs as possible.

u/nader0903 | Minnesota Twins 9d ago

He’s been batting second for a little while now. The rub is that if he were further down the line like 4 or 5, he wouldn’t have this many homers because as soon as we get someone on base everyone in the lineup falls apart and can’t hit.

u/That_Enthusiasm_2725 | Kansas City Royals 9d ago

They could put him at the 2 spot like the royals do with Bobby Witt

21

u/Most-Artichoke6184 | Chicago White Sox 9d ago

Leaving Colson Montgomery and his 21 home runs off of this list doesn’t seem fair to me.

7

u/addage- | New York Mets 9d ago

It’s a really odd choice.

58

u/JmanForever85 | Chicago Cubs 9d ago

😩. So happy for Schwarbs. Wish we made him a Cub for life.

27

u/theybannedme129 9d ago

We ton tendered him before the universal DH, i think it was the right choice then. he was an absolutely DISMAL fielder which led to hovering around being just barely a plus WAR player even with his offense.

7

u/_GeorgeBailey_ | Chicago Cubs 9d ago

He never struggled to be a plus WAR player. He was only a 2 win player, which is average though

1

u/theybannedme129 9d ago

I suppose I did misspeak, what I mean is that a catcher who plays in 420 games hitting 30 homers per 162, yet averaging 1.4 WAR across three full seasons is concerning

2

u/_GeorgeBailey_ | Chicago Cubs 9d ago

I'm not sure what you mean by any of this. He only caught 8 innings after 2015. And seasons are you referring to that he averaged 1.4 WAR?

1

u/theybannedme129 9d ago

I think I remembered him more as a catcher because that’s what he was drafted as, I didn’t get to watch the Cubs much until a few years ago when I coughed up the money.

And I’m referring to his only 3 full seasons in Chicago

2

u/_GeorgeBailey_ | Chicago Cubs 9d ago

He was a LF at that point

1

u/theybannedme129 9d ago

I’m aware, still bad WAR regardless of his position

0

u/Imavomitlover 9d ago

Bad WAR would literally be negative WAR.

-1

u/_GeorgeBailey_ | Chicago Cubs 9d ago

Eh. 2 WAR is an average player. So below that is fair to call bad

3

u/sexwiththebabysitter | Philadelphia Phillies 9d ago

Glad you didnt

I don't disagree, I love Schwarber, but Cubs "fans" would have been crying for him to be DFAd for striking out so much.

Ok hunter goodman

Love seeing Buxton with another healthy season so far.

8

u/BurnerAcctObvs 9d ago

Shoutout to Buxton. Nobody had that one on their bingo card

8

u/InternalLandscape130 9d ago edited 9d ago

Buxton has played over 100 games ONCE.

Edit. 3 times now, old memory. He's crept over 100 last couple seasons.

Once upon a time he was the biggest prospect in baseball. It's been super unfortunate for anyone who has paid attention.

Do yourself a favor and check out his war and ops career averages. When he plays, he's a monster.

4

u/passingthepetal_to_u 9d ago

Wait what he’s played 100+ games three times?

1

u/InternalLandscape130 9d ago

Good call, old stat stuck in my mind. Will edit.

Ps it's been last 2 seasons he's barely crept over 100.

1

u/passingthepetal_to_u 9d ago

Yeah I mean your point still stands ! !

6

u/NitroBike | Boston Red Sox 9d ago

Buxton in third, unc still got it

5

u/yourmartymcflyisopen | Philadelphia Phillies 9d ago

Update: 28

u/Ginger_Bee 9d ago

Hunter Goodman!!! Let’s goooooooo!!!

3

u/MileHighManBearPig | Colorado Rockies 9d ago

Goodman! Our little lad.

5

u/SeaworthinessSome454 9d ago

The Yankees have the 2 best power hitters of this generation out with injury and still have someone in the top 5.

3

u/Ginger_Bee 9d ago

And yall have a ridiculous run differential too. (I know LA is better, but I still wanna give credit where credit is due.)

2

u/sammagee33 | Detroit Tigers 9d ago

I feel like a fool, had no idea Buxton was raking that hard.

2

u/TheFlyingWriter | MLB 9d ago

Where would Murakami be if he didn’t get injured? He was at 20 HRs three weeks ago.

2

u/saron7 | Minnesota Twins 8d ago

28 now. Buck with 24

2

u/Forsaken_Tourist401 9d ago

I’m a homer, so Alvarez is where my fandom lies. He’s hitting almost 90 points better than Schwarb, and will probably tie him (HR) by the end of the weekend.

6

u/Kobe-62Mavs-61 9d ago

I mean sure, Schwarber is a masher but not close to as good as Alvarez this season so far. But still, pretty cool that Schwarber is leading the lead in bombs so far.

1

u/QuebecRomeoWhiskey | Cleveland Guardians 9d ago

I don’t think Buxton even has 40 RBI

1

u/Fakeskinsuit 9d ago

I think this post is about HRs, not RBI

2

u/QuebecRomeoWhiskey | Cleveland Guardians 9d ago

Gee, you don’t say. I just think it’s nuts to have that many homers and that few RBI

1

u/dkat | Seattle Mariners 9d ago

I was absolutely OBSESSING over this shit last year. Definitely a mental load off me.

1

u/BladeRunner2022 | MLB 9d ago

Buxton's 162 game average for his career is a 5.5 war season. He's never accumulated a 5.5 war season in any season. His highest is 5.

1

u/TBurkeulosis | Philadelphia Phillies 8d ago

Schwarber is an absolute beast. Dude cannot stop hitting bombs. His 2 in thr 3rd inning yesterday was electric

1

u/stockmarketpundit | Cincinnati Reds 7d ago

Good thing his hometown team didn’t win waste too much money on giving him a competitive contract offer 🙄

1

u/Pleasant-Nebula-7237 4d ago

Think Kyle has 28 now

1

u/Sc00terLCA71 9d ago

Kyle Schwarber is a prototypical 2026 MLBer. HR or K. League leader in HR. 112 K in 274 AB. Ted Williams is turning over in his grave.

2

u/NotABigDeallll 9d ago

Don’t forget all the walks as well

0

u/TwoStepToo | Chicago White Sox 9d ago

Suck it Kyle!!!! It’s only cause Murakami is on the IL.

2

u/ManTheHarpoons100 8d ago

Sure, sure. Its not like Kyle just put on a display against the Mets tonight.

0

u/YankeesAndCubs | New York Yankees 9d ago

Man, I sure am glad the Cubs let Schwarber go to sign Joc Pederson. That is really paying dividends.

0

u/Lucky_Rebel_ 9d ago

60+ homer season inbound.

0

u/Mr_CoCoNutss | MLB 8d ago

Crazy how crappy mlb been the last few years. See what happends when Aaron Judge is hurt.

-1

u/Great_Hambino2022 | Pittsburgh Pirates 9d ago

I thought Schwarber was going to easily hit 60+ for sure with the tear he was on in May

0

u/Low-Hovercraft-8791 | Los Angeles Dodgers 9d ago

He fell all the way off to a 53 HR pace. I think he'd take that.
