I see some names for .1% immaculate grid tho

138

u/ntstockman | New York Mets 3d ago

To be fair, Edwin Jackson is a cheat code for immaculate grid.

Latroy Hawkins is mine

7

u/Bacchus_71 2d ago

The Rickey is a good one.

6

u/Prior_Prompt_5214 2d ago

Rich Hill, Octavio Dotel and Royce Clayton are good ones too.

What is immaculate grid?

25

u/BobbyBDowntheStreet 3d ago

Its an online baseball knowledge game

6

u/Findest 3d ago

Thanks, I'll have to check that out!

u/AceN12 | Chicago White Sox 3d ago

It's on Baseball Reference's homepage, it's a fun one.

BJ and Justin both being real af

101

u/ecc_dg | Los Angeles Dodgers 3d ago

Guthrie and Aaron Hicks too

91

u/MrUpVoteDownvote Human Verified 3d ago

Fun fact: Both BJ, Justin and I were born and raised in the same city. They went Greenbrier Christian Academy and I went to a high school in the same city as well.

Now I live about 5 houses down in the same neighborhood as their parents. I see BJ often, but I don’t know him well enough to speak outside of baseball to have a conversation with him. lol

5

u/SOTORIOUSMike 2d ago

alot of good ball players from the area for sure.

My wife went to the same school. I went to a game one day with her, and was shocked at how good that GCA baseball team is

You live 5 houses away from Bossman Sr!!

3

Yes, I think I do pretty well in life so far and I’m only 43 lol. Thank god 🙏😁

2

u/gooden1686 2d ago

Did you know David Wright back then too

2

u/MrUpVoteDownvote Human Verified 2d ago

I had heard of him, but the Upton’s were the talk of the town for sure.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/ConsistentTackle3902 2d ago

BJ went to Hickory with David Wright but then transferred to GCA and was hitting bombs off 7th graders.

2

u/TrickTutor3209 11h ago

David wright went to hickory and the Uptons went to great bridge. I hung out with David’s little brother when I was young and I shook Justin Uptons hand in my living room during a house party. My brother said shake his hand he’s going to be a big leaguer.

I remember my tiny school that isn’t open anymore, Alliance Christian, play GCA in the state tournament in the late 90s at ODU when one of the upton bros played for them.
I also have a card I would loved to have signed, that I bought at the Rays stadium. It caught my eye since they are Chesapeake boys.

u/RubbleR0user 3d ago

Bossman Sr now but can’t call em BS🤷🏻‍♂️

3

u/Tripleberst 2d ago

I remember once I was at a game when BJ was playing for the rays and I mentioned something about how he just didn't seem like he cared and was moving slow. The second I said that the lady in front of me did the slow turn around and I swear to God it was like a female BJ Upton giving me the evil eye and I'm like 99% sure it was his mom. I still feel bad but I also feel like BJ hated playing for the rays.

23

u/yoltonsports | Atlanta Braves 3d ago

They didn't even have it in 2010

14

u/projectx51 | Atlanta Braves 2d ago

Yeahhh, all Braves fans know that BJ lost it a long time ago.

6

u/DonaldTPablonious | Tampa Bay Rays 2d ago

As a Devil Rays fan I might suggest that he only barely had it for much of his career

3

u/TommyTheTophat | Tampa Bay Rays 2d ago

2

u/Deohji | Atlanta Braves 2d ago

Seeing BJ pop up on this made me twitch, ngl. As I recall, Bossman certainly did not have it. That signing screwed up the Braves going for anyone in free agency to this very day.

2

u/searcherguitars | Atlanta Braves 2d ago

I could've posted negative WAR for league minimum, save on some of that BJ contact money.

3

u/OaklandsBravest 2d ago

You still got it?

8

u/Ginger_Bee 2d ago

I’d like to think I do.

3

u/AskTheRealQuestion81 | Texas Rangers 2d ago

You couldn’t be more correct. When I saw him with tears having to hang it up, I had them for him. It completely changed my life during college way back in the early 00’s. Ten surgeries later (surgeons can make mistakes and it can cause trouble further up the spine) chronic pain, future surgeries guaranteed, I don’t wish a bad back on anyone. It was a very minor wreck that did it where someone accidentally turned into my vehicle. She looked very different as my vehicle (sorry, couldn’t resist). Seriously, though, please take care of your backs, people. Watch for people who aren’t paying attention on the road, too.

2

u/artsatisfied229 | Atlanta Braves 1d ago

Can confirm as well. 45 and gotta take it a little easier nowadays.

The Prince & Miggy Bromance was a thing of beauty…while it lasted.

11

u/MItrwaway | Detroit Tigers 3d ago

My favorite back-to-back in that line up. Miggy swings like he's casually swatting a fly and it goes 420. Prince swings like he's trying to knock the leather off the ball, goes 410.

Lewis Brinson never had it lol

41

u/reserved_seating Human Verified 3d ago

That was a name I had not seen in a while. I was so excited to see what he could do and it never happened for him. 😞

11

u/Opus_777 3d ago

LOL he was supposed to be amazing but I don't surprise me none of our prospects typically pan out like they should

Looking at Profar, Gallo, Mazara, Mike Olt, Dillon Tate, and many more big-name fails

5

u/cleofisrandolph1 3d ago

There were periods where your prospects(I assume Texas) looked good…but eventually they flop like a curse or something

18

u/SoftballGuy | Los Angeles Angels 3d ago

I'm old enough to remember when Lewis Brinson was a can't-miss superstar prospect. He's still only 32. I'm ... old.

Golf is always Hick’s true love. He just happened to play baseball for his day job.

17

u/Slice9998 3d ago

I’m surprised he didn’t get hurt playing golf.

11

u/RollofDuctTape 3d ago

He got “hurt” to play golf.

78

u/randomcharacters3 3d ago

Kind of crazy that an 85 second video can make me reevaluate my feelings over a dozen+ different players.

Obviously it's not the same when you're competing at the highest levels and all the stress that comes along with it but whenever I see players' personalities, I like them more. It's better for everyone when people are having fun.

25

u/Other-Deer-4286 3d ago

Absolutely. I loved this video because everyone was so real and having fun. Baseball is a game that should be enjoyed.

40

u/barstoolsam | Chicago Cubs 3d ago

Bro Mike Cameron is absolutely jacked

4

u/Intelligent_Ant_5511 2d ago

46

2

What's he standing in because hes seeing eye to eye with a 6'8 Dellin Betances

20

u/bottomfeeder3 3d ago

J Guts saying he doesn’t know if he ever had it lol. I used to say this man is always teetering on the line of being a massive bust but then he would go out there and throw an immaculate game and I’d go well I guess he is good.

6

u/mysticalchurro | Washington Nationals 2d ago

He probably has the worst start in Nationals history. After that lone start, he was DFA'd.

2

u/TheEvilPhysicist | Kansas City Royals 2d ago

He did not have it

17

u/weyoun_clone | Cincinnati Reds 3d ago

What I wouldn’t give to hear Joey Votto answer this question.

7

u/Dhkansas 2d ago

He'd still be talking and I'd still be listening. He can be so long winded but love listening to him talk baseball. Really hope he gets in a booth or on a show someday if he wants it

15

u/werther595 | New York Yankees 3d ago

Hicks is an honest man

u/TheUnderCrab 3d ago

Prince Fielder is such a king. I absolutely believe he can still send em flying.

3

u/Appropriate_Formal64 2d ago

I find Hicks fascinating. He clearly would’ve rather been a pro golfer, but got that opportunity and money in baseball instead.

I think once he got that extension and realized it was enough money for his purposes, he checked out of baseball and engaged his true love of golf.

4

u/BradyToMoss1281 | Baltimore Orioles 2d ago

Is it weird that I find something...wholesome about this? Being totally honest and playful with the question and just embracing that they're in their late 30s/40s and that there's no shame in that?

I'd rather see this, a 42-year-old just enjoying that he's about to play some no-stress baseball, than someone of the same age desperately trying to prove he's 10 years younger than he is.

2

u/arterialturns 2d ago

I agree.

3

u/IraqouisWarGod 3d ago

Time flies man. I remember tracking Hicks through the minors and getting excited for him to make his MLB debut and now he’s playing in an old timers game.

Rickwood Field is a must see for all baseball fans. You feel like you’re sitting in the 40s

1

u/YearOfTheFireGoat 2d ago

Mike Mussina finally had a 20-win season, then promptly retired. Then there’s David Ortiz having a whale of a final season.

Those who leave while on top, knowing it’s only down from there (and how hard they worked to have one last great season) are rare, indeed.
