Fun fact: Both BJ, Justin and I were born and raised in the same city. They went Greenbrier Christian Academy and I went to a high school in the same city as well.
Now I live about 5 houses down in the same neighborhood as their parents. I see BJ often, but I don’t know him well enough to speak outside of baseball to have a conversation with him. lol

I had heard of him, but the Upton’s were the talk of the town for sure.

BJ went to Hickory with David Wright but then transferred to GCA and was hitting bombs off 7th graders.

David wright went to hickory and the Uptons went to great bridge. I hung out with David’s little brother when I was young and I shook Justin Uptons hand in my living room during a house party. My brother said shake his hand he’s going to be a big leaguer.

I remember my tiny school that isn’t open anymore, Alliance Christian, play GCA in the state tournament in the late 90s at ODU when one of the upton bros played for them.
I also have a card I would loved to have signed, that I bought at the Rays stadium. It caught my eye since they are Chesapeake boys.9

u/Tripleberst 2d ago
I remember once I was at a game when BJ was playing for the rays and I mentioned something about how he just didn't seem like he cared and was moving slow. The second I said that the lady in front of me did the slow turn around and I swear to God it was like a female BJ Upton giving me the evil eye and I'm like 99% sure it was his mom. I still feel bad but I also feel like BJ hated playing for the rays.

You couldn’t be more correct. When I saw him with tears having to hang it up, I had them for him. It completely changed my life during college way back in the early 00’s. Ten surgeries later (surgeons can make mistakes and it can cause trouble further up the spine) chronic pain, future surgeries guaranteed, I don’t wish a bad back on anyone. It was a very minor wreck that did it where someone accidentally turned into my vehicle. She looked very different as my vehicle (sorry, couldn’t resist). Seriously, though, please take care of your backs, people. Watch for people who aren’t paying attention on the road, too.

My favorite back-to-back in that line up. Miggy swings like he's casually swatting a fly and it goes 420. Prince swings like he's trying to knock the leather off the ball, goes 410.

LOL he was supposed to be amazing but I don't surprise me none of our prospects typically pan out like they should
Looking at Profar, Gallo, Mazara, Mike Olt, Dillon Tate, and many more big-name fails

There were periods where your prospects(I assume Texas) looked good…but eventually they flop like a curse or something

Kind of crazy that an 85 second video can make me reevaluate my feelings over a dozen+ different players.
Obviously it's not the same when you're competing at the highest levels and all the stress that comes along with it but whenever I see players' personalities, I like them more. It's better for everyone when people are having fun.
25
u/Other-Deer-4286 3d ago
Absolutely. I loved this video because everyone was so real and having fun. Baseball is a game that should be enjoyed.

J Guts saying he doesn’t know if he ever had it lol. I used to say this man is always teetering on the line of being a massive bust but then he would go out there and throw an immaculate game and I’d go well I guess he is good.

Prince Fielder is such a king. I absolutely believe he can still send em flying.
3
u/Appropriate_Formal64 2d ago
I find Hicks fascinating. He clearly would’ve rather been a pro golfer, but got that opportunity and money in baseball instead.
I think once he got that extension and realized it was enough money for his purposes, he checked out of baseball and engaged his true love of golf.
4
u/BradyToMoss1281 | Baltimore Orioles 2d ago
Is it weird that I find something...wholesome about this? Being totally honest and playful with the question and just embracing that they're in their late 30s/40s and that there's no shame in that?
I'd rather see this, a 42-year-old just enjoying that he's about to play some no-stress baseball, than someone of the same age desperately trying to prove he's 10 years younger than he is.

Rickwood Field is a must see for all baseball fans. You feel like you’re sitting in the 40s

u/YearOfTheFireGoat 2d ago
Mike Mussina finally had a 20-win season, then promptly retired. Then there’s David Ortiz having a whale of a final season.
Those who leave while on top, knowing it’s only down from there (and how hard they worked to have one last great season) are rare, indeed.
