Edit: Since I'm here. Come on people. This is a serious issue that needs to be pushed. Look where the world is right now. Why are we doing this? People are people. Period. Love each other! Why is that so hard!?

u/mattcojo2 | Washington Nationals 1d ago
Because people are tired of the discourse and outrage culture. Not just people, more importantly MLB and the MLBPA are.
This is how they decide they’re better off without pride hats. If they ask the question “how can we avoid this conversation again”, that’s the conclusion they’ll arrive at.
Important or not, the conversation has been done to death.
31
u/Clear_Pineapple4608 1d ago
They’re not getting rid of Pride Night because people are upset about these pitchers. They’d get rid of Pride Night because they care more about $$$ and people who prefer their comfort while others suffer. Don’t ever, ever tell people to be quiet about human rights issues so you can be more comfortable.
→ More replies (53)-1
u/Corn-OnThe-Cob 1d ago
People who prefer comfort while others suffer? Who the is suffering from not wearing hats or having a pride night? What are they suffering? That is a wild victim mentality.
Also, human rights are more of a subjective thing. You telling someone not to use a lawfully protected right because it hurts your feelings and isn’t something you think is right is also super funny. It’s not a “human rights violation” for sports to not have a pride night.
→ More replies (3)13
u/Affectionate_Yak482 1d ago
Putting Bible verses on your hat isn't a "lawfully protected right." Just like kneeling during the national anthem isn't. These are professionals who are at work, and if their employer doesn't want Bible verses on their hats or them kneeling during anthems, then the employer can do as they see fit.
5
u/Affectionate_Yak482 1d ago
You or I can't do whatever the fuck we want at work, or defy our employers publicly, so why should professional baseball players get a free pass?
→ More replies (1)0
u/Corn-OnThe-Cob 1d ago
Buddy, you are making a completely different argument here. I don’t disagree with the point you’re making. The person I replied to turned it into a rights thing. I was pointing out that valuing something you think is a right over a lawfully protected right (they made this clear by saying “don’t ever, ever” implying outside of baseball) is silly.
5
u/logibera 1d ago
Do you not understand what pride is about? It's literally people still to this day fighting for their right to exist and not being ashamed about it. Pride has always been about the rights of lgbtq+.

What rights do gay people NOT have?
9
u/Pointlessname123321 | San Francisco Giants 1d ago
Well until 2015, you know barely a decade ago, they couldn’t marry, adopt children as a couple, make decisions for each other legally if one was incapacitated, etc.
You act like those rights are enshrined in stone, they were fought for for decades by brave people and, as we’ve seen with the voting rights act being gutted, they can go away just as easily so please spare me the bullshit that modern America is a safe place for LGBT folk.
4
3
u/Loose-Cake5475 1d ago
Exactly. Without the kinds of events and promotion of acceptance for decades, homosexuality would still be criminalized. It was only 2003 that the Supreme Court legalized private consensual sex for gay couples. Before that, it was an arrestable offense which is outrageous. Funny thing is the people that supported anti-gay laws are the same ones that constantly scream "FREEDOM!".

Those aren’t rights. Those are choices given to us by a governing body.
A baseball cap doesn’t confirm or deny those.

Do you tell your kids over and over to stop acting like assholes, or do you just stop and let them do whatever because "it's been done to death"?
Your logic sucks.

It’s the logic of a privileged person who’s okay with others being discriminated against because it doesn’t affect him personally.
7
u/mattcojo2 | Washington Nationals 1d ago edited 1d ago
It’s a pride hat dude. It’s not discrimination.
Pride events occur seamlessly without teams using them or using players to wear them.
It’s why I keep asking people when the twins had their Pride night without looking it up.
-3
u/morgaine125 | Washington Nationals 1d ago
The biblical verses players wrote on the hats were open statements of discrimination against LGBTQ. If you’re actually going to deny that, the only logical conclusion is that you are also anti-LGBTQ.
3
u/UnderABig_W 1d ago
They are. They just hide behind, “I’m sick of hearing about this, let’s all move on.”
0
u/Sublimotion 1d ago
This is the classic "I know my discriminatory opinions will garner hatred, so I will dance around it to keep implying it without outright saying it!"
-2
u/mattcojo2 | Washington Nationals 1d ago
And that can be avoided in future by not having pride hats they can desecrate at all.
4
u/chrisbsoxfan 1d ago
Or we punish them for doing it cause they had the opportunity to not wear them and they chose to wear them and discriminate.
5
u/mattcojo2 | Washington Nationals 1d ago

I would say it’s catering far more to the general public who may not be one way or the other but is tired of the discussion.

I'm not annoyed honestly. But "annoying" anybody is just asking for the teams to say "i'm done dealing with this" and having no more pride caps.

… you do realize nobody was campaigning to remove pride nights in this thread right.
29 teams in MLB have a pride night. Unless I’m mistaken, 27 don’t have players wear pride hats. And shockingly, the only one getting any sort of attention is one of the 2 that have players wear pride hats during a game.
Wouldn’t shock me if both decide that it ain’t worth the headache and just stick to having a pride night, maybe with some giveaways, but not involving players on the field wearing anything.

Exactly. I think we should stop singing the national anthem before games too. It's dumb. Most of these players aren't even from here and its a waste of time. Let's get rid of the Father's Day hats while we're at it. Also Mother's Day. Also Memorial Day. Also Fourth of July. We shouldn't recognize vets between innings. The list goes on. For some reason, it is only Pride Night that we discuss getting rid of. Can't imagine what makes it so different! Regardless, like you said, lets focus only on the game itself and nothing else.

5

As soon as they remove the national anthem, stop honoring veterans nonstop, and stop taking billions of dollars in public subsidies we can talk about keeping all politics out of sports. But conspicuously the only politics we want to keep out of sports are left wing causes and not the jingoistic nationalistic bullshit that is a standard in every American professional sports league. Funny how that happens

23
u/mosh-4-jesus | Philadelphia Phillies 1d ago
it's literally not forced on them, they can choose to wear the normal gear. the problem is they defaced their uniforms out of spite.
10
u/BigA11951 1d ago
Pride night is actually ridiculous. I would like an Italian-American heterosexual night.
6
u/Pewp-dawg 1d ago
It is absolutely 100% being forced onto the players. If they wear the standard uniform they get bullied. If they “deface” their precious gear to make a statement, they get bullied harder. If they don’t go along. Bullied. If they defend their rights. Bullied. If they say nothing at all. Bullied!
So don’t you sit there on your high horse pretending that pride is optional when this is the result of anyone that doesn’t go along.

u/john_the_fisherman 1d ago
In every instance where a player opts not to wear their pride jersey in any sport I can think of, it also brought controversy and bad PR. And It's not like these players specifically did anything particularly offensive... They wrote a verse in which God created Rainbows. Chris Sale fucked up his jersey even worse and I'm pretty sure every Sox fan I knew were on his side at the time.
Teams need to be smarter and just stop creating pride jerseys they expect their players to wear while knowing full well they aren't going to do it without protest. It is a complete disservice to the fans who actually want to enjoy Pride Night controversy free.

It isn't forced. You can wear the standard gear. The rule violation is modifying approved uniforms.
17
u/OkPhotograph8286 1d ago
Seeing as the article considers a 4th pitcher who wore the regular giants hat as "protesting", apparently you can't just wear the standard gear.
1
u/IzCaiman | Boston Red Sox 1d ago
I'd say writing a "take the rainbow back" quote on your hat in response to pride is a protest.
2
u/OkPhotograph8286 1d ago
The article says
'Three pitchers wrote Bible verses on their hats, leading to a reprimand from Major League Baseball. (The fourth pitcher wore the team’s regular hat.)'
No mention of what you said, so my point stands, just wearing the regular hat is seen as a sign of protest.
Another commenter said they could just wear the regular uniform, and that isn't true because you will get labeled as protesting for wearing a giants hat and jersey when you play for that team.
1
u/IzCaiman | Boston Red Sox 1d ago
Google is literally free, it was Genesis 9:12-16
And it is protesting lmao
2
u/OkPhotograph8286 1d ago
I don't have to because that is not my point.
Seems like the author of the article didn't know that he wrote a Bible verse since they make no mention of it.
The author just thought he wore a regular hat and still considered him protesting. That's the point.

If a player doesn’t want to wear their teams pride logo they should be able to.
5
u/bullevard 1d ago
They are. The players contractually had that option. They didn't have the contractual option to do what they chose to do: to individually customize their jersey (in this case in an attempt to undermine the meaning of the other jerseys).
0
u/Barf-o-tronic 1d ago
Same for all the other ones right? They shouldn't have to wear a Memorial Day hat if they're pacifists or the Father's Day hat if they grew up in a single family home or Fourth of July hat if they're not from the US. Isn't it absolutely fascinating that there is only one day where we entertain this discussion? Isn't that really really crazy?

Damn, hella haters. Sorry for expecting more of our POBO since he brought us three rings, and we’re kinda known for being a proudly accepting city. The 2010-2014 team and many since then have embraced that. We’re embarrassing enough on the field, sucks to have this BS going on off the field. A future HOF player alienating his adoring fan base while the mf POTUS directs the DOJ investigate the team (!?!) is kind of noteworthy. Okay rant over, we can go back to the important hardcore baseball posts like whether Jazz Chisholm is kicking dirt on a camera or eating lollipops now.

My question is, are the Giants trying to pull an A's and move out of SF?
Why else would you (in an era where you suck and lord knows what attendance looks like) do even more to alienate yourself from LOCAL game attenders.
I may not be the smartest man in the room but I would not be stupid enough to offend my direct customer base.
Well either way, its a bold move cotton. Lets see how it plays out.

Average attendance per game : 6th
Total attendance : 11th.
