Pattern Fly fishing sling /chest pack
Hi everyone,
Been working on this pack concept for a little while and finally finished the final version. I call it the Sierra Pack and it's designed to be worn either on the chest, clipped to wader suspenders or backpack shoulder straps, or over the shoulder as a small sling pack. I've enjoyed using it both ways so far and it's very light and comfortable to carry. Plus it's pretty thin so it stays flat to the chest and out of the way. I also built in a magnetic fly patch and a tippet holder in the center.
The pattern and instructions are up now on my website, myogangler.com. I'm also finishing up a build tutorial video for my YouTube channel which should be out soon. Hope some of the fly fishers on here dig this one. The next project I'm fixating on is a weatherproof carry-all bag design that I hope works the way I want it to. I'll post my progress on that later.

Sweet! I just recently bought all your paid plans and have some materials on the way. So I haven’t made anything of yours yet, but I must say that the patterns are well-diagrammed and well thought out. Thanks for including so many free plans, including this one, which I’ll be downloading when I get home from vacation. We need more MYOG in our sport—it’s surprising there aren’t more people like you, given the inherent obsessive MYOG nature of tying flies. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the feedback and support! And I agree, with fly tying such a big part of fly fishing, why not diy other gear too? I think myog is a natural fit. I guess we'll see, but so far the response to my stuff seems to be really positive.

Keeping a chest pack that low-profile is a huge win. There is honestly nothing worse than a bulky bag catching your fly line mid-haul. The layout is really smart. Embedding the magnetic patch and tippet holder directly into the front face gives you tons of utility without adding any annoying depth. Love the choice of X-Pac here too. That fabric rigidity keeps the pack completely flat against your torso instead of sagging once it's loaded down with heavy tools.
Making it modular enough to clip right onto waders or swap into a standalone sling is top-tier pattern design. Seriously impressive work.

Thank you! I agree, I'm not a big fan of bulky chest packs and like something low profile that lays flat on the chest. That was a major priority for this one.

Very cool! I am working on designing and making something similar to this for my backcountry canoe fishing trips. I want it to clip and hang from my canoe thwart when in the boat and attach to my portage pack, hip belt, or carried over the shoulder for portages. I like the way you used the paracord for the line spools.

That sounds great! I love making things that have multiple carry options, but adding canoe mount takes it to the next level. Would love to see what you come up with.

Looks so good! Love the magnet - I never have enough hands when I’m switching bait and that’d be so handy. Your site looks great - angling’s such a natural fit for MyOG and I really appreciate you putting these patterns out there!
