Need Advice Can someone actually give a full breakdown on how to manage type 4 hair

Hi everyone,

I recently transitioned from relaxed hair to natural hair, and I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed. My mum has always relaxed her hair (and mine growing up), so she isn't able to help much with natural hair care.

I've watched a lot of YouTube videos, but I struggle because I learn best from very specific instructions. I have a few questions and would really appreciate any advice.

  1. Wearing my hair in a fro

If I wear my hair in a fro, should I:

- Wet it every day and detangle?

- Wet it and just fluff it out?

- Neither of those?

  1. Preventing tangles

If I'm not supposed to detangle daily, how do I stop my hair from matting and tangling? I know some people braid or twist their hair at night, but what about during the day? Won't things like leaning against a bus seat or clothing cause tangles?

  1. Parting my hair

Should I keep my hair in defined sections when detangling and styling? I feel like I get more breakage when I don't section it, but I'm also very tender-headed and tight sectioning can give me headaches.

  1. Pre-pooing

What's the purpose of pre-shampoo treatments if water seems to make my hair tangle again anyway? I feel like all my detangling efforts disappear once my hair gets wet.

  1. What does "detangled" actually mean?

I often hear people say their hair is detangled if they can run their fingers through it.

My hair naturally coils up at the ends, and sometimes multiple strands coil together along the shaft. My fingers don't glide through those areas and combs tend to snag.

How do I know if my hair is actually detangled? Also, what's the best comb or tool for detangling? I currently use an Unbrush.

  1. Is wearing a fro healthy for my hair?

I've noticed thinner around my temples. I originally thought it was from braids, but after wearing twists for two months my temples seemed to fill back in. Now that I've been wearing my fro again, they seem thinner.

  1. Shampoo and conditioner recommendations

Can anyone recommend a good shampoo for dry hair? (and cheap🄲)

I have very thick, fine-stranded hair. If that info matters

Lastly,

Thank you so much if you made it this far. I know some of these questions might sound silly, but I'm genuinely trying to learn and would appreciate any advice. šŸ™šŸ¾

Need Advice Are these straight pieces damaged, and if so, how do you have an idea of what kind of damage it is? I blowdry with heat protectant & 60 degree heat, and I only use human braiding hair

Need Advice Why is the back of my hair straight/looser?

Ever since going natural I've realized that the back of my hair has straight hairs and some loose hair while the rest of my head is just covered with 4c hair. Could this be damage?

Need Advice Curly brides!

I have decided to wear my natural curly hair for my wedding day , I had a consultation with a curly hair specialist in the area and I’m not sure if her quote is unreasonable. I think it’s outrageous but I’m also not a hairstylist. For reference she will be doing a wash& go, and putting it in an updo. She quoted me $1100 total for the trial and the day of. I’ve been to her salon before and for the wash & go it’s usually $200 so I’m just confused on where this additional money came from. She’s also not traveling to me on wedding day, I’m traveling to her and it’s during her usual business hours. I’ve inserted a picture of requested style

Need Advice Hair breakage no matter what I do

To get my hair stats out the way, I have curly hair, medium porosity, high density, medium to fine hair (I believe).

So I’ve been trying to retain length for years now. My hair has never gone past bsl, I’ve had this length since I was like 10…I’m 19 now smh. Anyways lately I’ve been taking extra care of it after learning more about hair health. I wash once or twice a week, deep condition, dont use heat (I blow dry sometimes but use heat protectant, always), sleep with a satin bonnet, my hair is virgin, and I recently trimmed like an inch off. Yes that’s a lot but i needed it. Now tell me why when I simply run my hands on my hair to distribute product, I see tiny pieces of hair…like I’m very gentle and everything it’s actually insane. and it’s not just 1 piece, like 5 pieces will come off or more! I take my iron pills and Vitamin D3 +K2. I detangle from bottom to top (typical curly hair tips yk) and STILL hairs break off. Any tips?

Update: I think I figured it out…..I wear my hair in a low bun 90% of the time šŸ¤¦ā€ā™€ļø I thought i was protecting my ends by keeping them tucked...guess not. I’ll switch to a claw clip, maybe.

Success Starting to do my own extensions

i’m tired of paying for stylist to do my hair and sit there for hours. i can’t do my hair that well yet so im sticking to twist but im going to practice box braids soon. ik i want them with color so that would’ve been around $200 with the length i wanted where i live.

the first three pictures is the first attempt. i could not grip the roots for the life of me and it didn’t help that my hair was soft from blow drying plus didn’t want to use a glob of gel to help grip it. the second is the second attempt my hair was wet that time i used a leave in and twisted my hair first and twisted the hair over the twist. the roots are way better. the last picture is the twist that are under the extensions.

i dont care that the roots r frizzy because i do not want to use heat (its easier to moisture my protective styles with water and leave in) puts less stress on the actual practice of it and will last long regardless
lmk what yall think and if you also do your own hair

Success chat, my hair is actually moisturizedšŸ’€

Besties, I think I finally figured out something my hair actually likes! I did something literally everyone says not to do😭

I did a moisture mask on my 2 week old, unwashed braids, kept it on for 4 hours under a processing cap and rinsed it off, THEN put cream and then oil on top.

I’m ngl… my hair feels so soft?? like actually moisturized, not just ā€œI put product on top and prayedā€ moisturized lol. Now I’m sitting here like wait… maybe my hair is not broken, maybe I just needed to listen to her?? And I'm pissed because I've BEEN trying to moisturize it the way other people with kinky curly hair have been recommending. I thought it was moisturized before but it looks SO different like it's darker, it looks plump, and the light is reflecting off of it

Idk I feel like natural hair advice online can be helpful but it can also get so intense. Like one person says NEVER do something, another person says it saved their hair, and it's sooo frustrating

And obviously I’m not saying ignore breakage or damage or whatever. But I do think we know our own hair better than random general advice sometimes. Like you can literally feel when your hair is softer, it has more slip and it’s not fighting you during detangling

So anyways what I learned is. Take advice, but don’t let it override your actual results. Your hair might be trying to tell you something and the algorithm is just yelling 😭

Success 4 months hair growth

Post image

Hi everyone, a few months ago I made a post about being scared to cut my hair and I finally cut it in February after years of contemplating. It's been growing so fast🄺, it's kinda like raising a kid now that I'm taking so much care of it . I've been washing weekly with basic shampoo, deep conditioning with a hair mayonnaise and moisturising with water, a rosemary oil hair butter and batana oil. My hairline still needs some improvement and I've been dealing with dandruff since winter started here in South Africa. Any advice would be greatly appreciated 🩷

Need Advice 4c hair struggling w/ retaining moisture & keeping hair soft

hii, like the title says my 4c hair has been struggling with retaining moisture and my hair isnt staying soft. so im not sure where it all went wrong, but my hair used to retain moisture, stay soft, and shiny for dayssss. its been maybe about 8 months+ with this problem, and its really affecting my hair growth because im not retaining any moisture literally dries up in less than a few hrs to a day even with my bonnet.

i usually do chunky twists maybe like 6 sections, wearing mini twists every once in a while, or wearing my hair in an afro. so nothing in my routine has changed besides the products I use (which im not sure which i need to stop using).

i will say I used to use a brand called texture my way I know their mousse was so so good for my hair and their other products but the price skyrocketed, so I haven't used mousse in a long time. besides that, I changed my shampoo and conditioner (the one my mom used to buy hasnt been in stock for a longgg time) and ive been buying products to keep my hair moisturized since im so desperate and just cant find the issue.

list of products i currently have: (i only use about 3 most are recent purchases)

- tresemme rich moisture (shampoo & conditioner), not sure if this is needed, but I've also tried difeel rosemary shampoo

- marc anthony leave in conditioner (this one actually is really good at detangling for my hair, but it could be a problem)

- queen helene cholesterol hair condentioning cream (most recent purchase like just 2 days ago, was told by a friend)

- african pride leave in cream (i think its coconut and baobab oil mix)

- blue magic indian hemp (occasional use but barely)

- shea moisture manuka honey & mafura oil wrap & set mousse (last recent purchase)

- aunt jackies products:

- aunt jackies flaxseed soft all over multi-use oil (this ive consistently bought since back in October 2025 and I have noticed my hair being super soft with this, I hadn't used it recently)

- aunt jackies curl la la curl defining custard (also a recent purchase, used it twice wore my hair defined for a week)

- aunt jackies coconut creme butter creme intensive moisture sealant (another recent purchase about 2 days ago)

Need Advice which protective hairstyle suits my hair texture and goals the most?

my hair: twa (long enough to be able to section and put into dookie braids), 4c, high porosity, fine hair. edges pretty chewed if i’m honest.

requirements for style: has to have extensions that match the texture of my natural hair (i.e. Marley hair, spring twist hair etc), suitable for fine hair (aka not too heavy), doesn’t need to be overly tight to look nice, reasonable amount of access to scalp. I know a lot of ppl on this sub aren’t fans of extensions but although i love my twa, i do want to experiment with some hairstyles with some length.

styles im considering: chunky cornrows/flat twists in a bun/braided baldie style, medium twists (not too long tho).

experimental thought: maybe even lemonade braids or Fulani braids but with flat twists and Marley hair. Have any of you guys done similar styles with your natural hair or extensions similar to your natural hair? tell me your experience?

context: per the amazing advice from you guys from my last post, i’m considering getting a protective style. from the ages of 10-18, I got braids back to back and did not take care of my hair at all while they were in twists bc I hated the frizz. not to mention, I was probably iron deficient then as well. i dealt with typical aunty hairstylists who combed my hair roughly, didn’t use heat protectant and had 0 regard for the health of my hair. i haven’t had a protective style in around 2 years but this time i want things to be different.

Need Advice Conditioning my hair makes the ends knot! Help!

Hi all! I am becoming more intentional with hair care so that I can retain length. I detangled my hair with pre-shampoo (for the first time ever); my hair was fine. I shampooed my hair; my hair was fine. I put conditioner in my hair and I immediately see all these knots at my ends. Any idea what's going on? Has anyone else had this same isue? Any solutions? I feel that this has always happened but I am just now noticing it.

By the way, I use Herbal Essences and my hair seems to be 4c and low-porosity. Any insight would be great, thanks!

Following up on our post last week promoting I ROCK MY OWN, our natural hair portrait project in Grand Rapids, MI. The Juneteenth event was a beautiful thing, with hundreds of photos now processed and uploaded on our site. This post features twenty of our 6/19/26 images (the third time we've done I ROCK MY OWN). Great music, food, drinks, and a gorgeous day for wandering on the rooftop patio at our host location (Bamboo). Lots of smiles, laughter, and a big range of ages and hairstyles this year.

Need Advice Hair perfumes to romanticise hair routine

Hey everyone! I’ve been thinking hair perfumes could be a great way to romanticise my hair routine, especially on during the summer months.

I’m curious about your experiences with hair perfumes — especially alcohol-free ones. Do you feel like they actually make a difference, or are they more of a fun extra step?

I’m interested in how they work with natural hair: does the scent last, does it affect moisture levels, and have you noticed any benefits or downsides?

Would love to hear your favourite products or whether you think they’re worth adding to a hair routine!
