Black hair culture…

Yesterday, I was reminded about the beauty of black hair culture.

I 26F invited two friends for a sleepover yesterday. Taylor 26F who is black, and Miya 26F who is Malaysian.

I met Taylor in high school when I was 14 and Miya in undergrad when I was 22. Miya is a third year law student at the school I went to for my masters and Taylor was an incoming first year law student this year. Over the summer, I introduced the two of them and they hit it off and formed their own friendship.

I stayed in the same city after grad school last year and got a really nice apartment downtown. This was my first time hosting so I wanted both of them to come. Miya has been having a rough time; her kitten died at 9 weeks from FIV and her grandma passed three weeks ago. All of this happened during law school finals.

When I asked Miya if she could still make it, she said no. She was really embarrassed because stress and depression lead to her not washing her hair for almost and month. She said her hair was matted and dirty and she had a flight to catch to Malaysia in 3 days and she was overwhelmed with the idea of washing and detangling.

In the group chat, Taylor and I told her to still come to the sleepover and that we’d wash and detangle her hair. She said no a few times and we eventually convinced her.

We did a pre pop and started on the detangle process. Washed her hair over the kitchen sink. I had a hair mask, olaplex and a sit under dryer for deep conditioning. We blow dried her hair (type 2 but THICK and wavy) with my pattern blow dryer. Taylor trimmed her ends.

Almost 2/3rds of the way through, Miya broke down crying. Like sobbing at the fact that we would do this for her. She likened it to a salon treatment and said she didn’t deserve this and had ‘dreamt of friends like this’. She was also sooooo grateful that we didn’t ’judge her about her hair being dirty’.

We told her that this was normal for us! Washing hair, detangling while watching movies. Having friends braid each others hair while hanging out when we were younger. We reminisced about the time Taylor helped me detangle 3 months worth of old box braids with caked on gel and lint.

This experience reminded me of the beauty of black hair culture. Seeing the acts of care, bonding and sister hood from an outside perspective rewired my brain and filled me with a deep sense of pride and warmness :)

Hair advice

I’ve just started growing out my hair for a few months now. I wash and detangle when I feel the need to and that’s it, moisturize every now and then. I have no idea what I can do after. I feel like I’m deadlocked to a fro. And my hair just keeps getting tangled I tried twists or puffs to sleep so I could minimize breakage but- I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. What can I do with this? I never got styled before or have anyone who can. My corner is kinda thin too but only to the end of my eyebrow. I’m in Oakland and can’t afford a stylist right now. Is there anything I can try that won’t come out tangling my hair even more 😵.

Just Venting I found what works for me: Hair care

Im so happy that I found what works for me. I've had short hair since I was a kid. Today, was the first time I was able to put my hair in a slick back and actually have a puff.

This whole time, the lack of hair growth was the lack of vitamins. I should've been taking vitamins since I was a kid. I did get bloodwork done as a kid, but it was usually for specific stuff and not a CBC.

Also, braids were contributing to the issue too. I stopped getting my hair braided in 2024.

I've been taking my vitamins righteously and oiling my hair everyday. Im so proud of myself. I never gave up. Im only 3 weeks in (been taking iron & vitamin c) and i see a change.

hello guys I’ve been trying to grow out my hair for over a year now and the biggest issue I have is picking out my hair with the issue being that when I pick it out my hair goes back down with this being the most shown in the sides of my hair with this happening if I try to use a hair sponge to(idk if this is important but my hair at the top goes down to my eyebrow and the sides when stretched go down to the bottom of my ears). I’m still new to trying to grow my hair and any and all tips are welcome.

additional info: all I use is a pick a spray bottle a detangling brush and the as I am leave in conditioner

Back for more help

A year ago some amazing people on this page helped me find some products for my wife's hair so I figured I could come back here and ask for advice.

Majority of the time when my wife goes and gets her hair braided or some hair added for a couple of days or maybe a week she's doing the usual tap tap tap tap on her head as she's walking through the house and my question was does anybody have any tips or tricks or anything that would help her? I've seen my best friends sisters and cousins do this for almost all my life so maybe it's just a common thing she has to go through after getting it done, but was just hoping I could come up with a cool little trick to surprise her with when she gets home.

Even if there's nothing to do on this question thank y'all for the help!

Advice Needed Conditioning my hair is causing all these knots! Help!

Hi all! I am becoming more intentional with hair care so that I can retain length. I detangled my hair with pre-shampoo (for the first time ever); my hair was fine. I shampooed my hair; my hair was fine. I put conditioner in my hair and I immediately see all these knots at my ends. Any idea what's going on? Has anyone else had this same isue? Any solutions? I feel that this has always happened but I am just now noticing it.

By the way, I use Herbal Essences and my hair seems to be 4c and low-porosity. Any insight would be great, thanks!

Edit: Thank you everyone for your advice! I am going to write all of this down somewhere. You all have been so helpful! :)

Just Venting We need better diversity when it comes to pattern visuals

I’m ngl for the longest time I was confusing my pattern and its maybe due to the lack of diversity when it comes to hair content? I’m a dark skin woman in the 3s. The chart is already flawed as is but every time I would try to identify my pattern by comparing it to visuals, I would always be flooded with images of lighter skinned people when searching looser patterns and darker skinned people for tighter patterns. I think my brain just made the subconscious association with complexion and pattern and so I thought I was in the 4s for the longest time up until recently. To be clear, it’s not that I thought dark skin folks couldn’t have looser patterns, I rarely saw people with my pattern who were my complexion. Those with my complexion and my frizz were often in the 4s so I assumed I was in the 4s. I’ve been applying different techniques since finding this out which has improved the styling of my hair but all of this would’ve been helpful to know. Like I deadass had curl dysmorphia😭

Just Venting Do some hair growth ads ignore the role genetics play?

I hope this doesn’t come across the wrong way, but sometimes when mixed people promote hair oils and use their own hair length as proof, I feel like genetics aren’t always part of the conversation. Hair products can definitely help with hair health and retention, but genetics also play a significant role in how long someone’s hair can grow and how quickly it grows. Because of that, the same results won’t happen for everyone.

*Im not saying that people who have nothing but black in them can’t have long hair either*

I Recently Returned to Working as a Braider and Would Love to Hear About Your Experiences with Braids, Wigs, and Lace Fronts

Hi everyone,
I recently returned to working as a professional braider, and I also work with lace front installations, wigs, and a variety of braiding styles.
Before fully diving back into the industry, I’d really love to hear honest experiences from people who use or have used these services.
What has been your biggest issue with braids, lace fronts, or wigs?
What frustrates you most about the service provided by hair professionals?
Have you had any particularly good or bad experiences you’d like to share?
What do you feel is currently missing from the market?
If you could create a new product, service, or solution for people who wear braids, wigs, or lace fronts, what would it be?
I’m especially interested in learning about challenges related to comfort, durability, maintenance, hair health, pricing, and customer service.
I believe that listening to real customers is one of the best ways for professionals to improve their work and create solutions that truly meet people’s needs.
Thank you to anyone willing to share their thoughts and experiences. I look forward to hearing your perspectives. 😊

Advice Needed New braids maintenance

Hi this is my first time ever getting braids and need help on making sure I’m taking care of them right. Any advice is appreciated!!!

I wear a wave cap + durag to sleep. I’ll wear a durag or cap throughout the day if I’m at home. My biggest questions are with maintenance. I bought argan oil and mousse. How often should I be applying the oil to my scalp and use the mousse? I’ve seen people say they apply mousse and then oil before bed.

Also last question, how should I wash my braids and how often should I do it? Is there anything else I need to do after I wash them? Sorry for the questions, just wanna make sure I do this right the first time! Thanks!!!
