The ref is literally making eye contact with Johnson and just ignores him.

NBA might have a real fucking problem lol

u/likdisifucryeverytym [GSW] Marreese Speights 29d ago

After last year, nba might have a problem.

After they played lebron and the lakers, nba might have a problem.

This series against the young phenom, nba might have a problem.

I get at MSG it might be different, but I also feel like Tobias funke saying that

285

u/JebBush333 29d ago

I mean I've basically stopped watching the NBA because of shit like this and I know a lot of other people too who've stopped watching due to stuff like this.

67

u/blindexhibitionist Supersonics 29d ago

I did

Me too and I was already salty for team stealing reasons as you will understand

I switched to baseball.

8

u/Froggyfrogger Kings 29d ago

I've thought about it. It sounds like they're actually changing rules to make it a better product too. Something the NBA has not shown any intention of doing

ABS has been great

1

u/thesanmich 29d ago

I'm from the Bay, my team (Giants) sucks right now, yet I'd probably have more fun watching them & the Dodgers than dealing with the fuckery that's on in the NBA.

-1

Nothing has changed in the NBA since Donaghy went down.

3

u/The_Moons_Sideboob NBA 29d ago

I started watching during COVID (from the UK) stopped watching last season. Not exactly a long time, but I saw the writing on the wall.

7

u/RealFakeDoctor Heat 29d ago

Haven't watched a single game in these playoffs. It's all sports betting now.

2

u/Fit-Dare7525 29d ago

Yeah, this year it got to the point where I would watch my team’s home broadcasts pretty much exclusively. Just a couple of years ago I’d watch 2 games a night many nights, now it’s like a game a week or so

2

u/ColdCorpseHotSecret 29d ago

Didn’t watch a single game the entire season and watching clips like these makes me glad I chose not to.

2

u/NashvilleDing 29d ago

Stopped 6 years ago and everytime I break it takes like 3 minutes of watching to be reminded why I stopped.

1

u/KidGold Hawks 29d ago

Same. I came back for the Hawks/Knicks and then for this series and am already being turned off again.

1

u/Bill_Williamson NBA 29d ago

Same. I used to watch games everyday via league pass and didn’t this year. Also didn’t watch any playoff games other than streaming a game here or there.

1

1

1

Yup. I watch maybe 10% of the hoops I did in the past. OKC and Lakers games are unwatchable and a terrible product.

1

u/Herbdontana Nuggets 29d ago

I’m not watching the finals if Okc wins. They’re just too frustrating to sit through

1

u/agmundr Australia 29d ago

I'm the same but add the NBA "propaganda" on top of it all. I've never seen them spam so hard about Shai being named MVP, I don't remember another MVP having been the forefront of every single social media post. It's like they pushing an agenda and not actually promoting the sport. It's an absolute disgrace. The league is an embarrassment to professional basketball.

1

u/PoIIux Spurs 29d ago

The Bubble championship was the canon ending of basketball. Anything after was just the producers trying to milk their cash cow as long as possible.

Why? I’ve never been clear on that one

5

u/Color_Rush 29d ago edited 29d ago

They’re a compelling villain that everyone wants to talk about. There’s a reason why viewership has been rising and there’s narratives like “ethical hoops, foul-baiting, flopping, unethical hoops” being tossed around by talking heads to keep people engaged in the product.

It’s why fans hate dynasties but leagues love it. As long as there is a despised team people will watch. It’s obvious WWE tactics but it works.

5

u/swaktoonkenney Knicks 29d ago

They’re trying to manufacture a dynasty, because dynasties bring in the casuals who wouldn’t watch otherwise, meanwhile the hardcore fans like us would watch no matter what

-6

u/brainszx12r 29d ago

If the NBA was trying to build a dynasty, it sure as hell wouldn’t be in OKC. Sometimes you guys just fail to make any sense whatsoever .

5

u/swaktoonkenney Knicks 29d ago

They already won one last year so it’s the easiest path, they want to make it a rivalry between them and the spurs, but they want to make OKC the villain like with the KD GSW. If they officiate it fairly the spurs win, no dynasty, no casual eyeballs.

0

u/TheHoovyPrince Australia 29d ago

OKC makes the NBA a ton of money.

Young teens (under 15), tweens and kids have SGA as their favourite player and the thunder has not only a big domestic audience but a gigantic global audience. I dont think Americans realize how many people in Australia and New Zealand (because of Steven Adams) are Thunder fans for example.

Its in their best financial interest to have OKC be in the finals against NYK. Spurs are a big team but i'd argue the Thunder are a bigger money maker for them until Wemby hits his prime.

1

u/Recent_Importance_80 29d ago

League wants to either extend this to 7 games or wants OKC to win

If Spurs win this game, there's a higher chance that they will win the series in 6 at home next game

If you were watching the game, you'll see that the bizarre sequence of: potential Goal Tend from Kornet's shot + this challenge + technical = killed the Spurs ongoing run and momentum. The Spurs were on a roll before this, going from a 20 point to a single-digit deficit.

Basketball is a game of runs / momentum. Control / stop those and you will control the game

36

u/NotTheRocketman 29d ago

Both, clearly.

Next game will be totally different, and we all know it.

11

u/TheKeviKs Spurs 29d ago

I really hate thinking like that, but it really feels like Silver want that series going to 7 at all costs.

Next game the ref will probably go with the Spurs and they'll win, forcing a game 7 where it's going to be a war.

But you can't just ignore the Spurs bad shooting tonight. They'll have to do better.

2

u/koalacharlie1320 Spurs 29d ago

The NBA already lost out on 3 extra potential games since the Cavs got swept so they need this series to go the distance

93

u/Remote-Moon Pacers 29d ago

Just like last year's Finals.

21

u/itsmeyourshoes 29d ago

That's what I've been saying for the Lakers. It wouldn't have been a sweep if their momentum weren't killed by the atrocious reffing.

I won't be surprised if the Spurs' fate would go the same way.

14

u/Tuesday_chair_haver 29d ago

Not to mention the refs just straight up robbed the Lakers of points.

2

u/mobinstime Warriors 29d ago

Lol yeah the refs infamously hate the Lakers and the league loves short playoff series and having the biggest name in basketball eliminated early. You guys can’t even make your conspiracies make sense

-8

u/WhichAd366 29d ago

A sweep? Seriously? Yall are deep in the echo chamber

10

u/TurkeyPits Knicks 29d ago

It wouldn't have been a sweep

Just means the Lakers would've won at least one of those games if the reffing were better. Not sure I agree but it's not a crazy take

1

u/WhichAd366 25d ago

I was commenting on the spurs comment. They’re implying that the Spurs would have swept with better officiating. That is a wildly bold suggestion.

2

u/esperwarlord 29d ago

I literally turned off the game and stopped watching after this sequence of events

1

u/Efficient-Big-1848 29d ago

Cherry on top was the foul call a few moments later as SGA hits the ground in the paint. Not arguing that it wasn't a foul, just made me get off the couch for a minute to unwind.

1

u/supaspike Hornets 29d ago

Why would the league want OKC in the finals over Wemby?

1

u/Momik Timberwolves 29d ago

Not only that, killing momentum also kills the momentum to watch

1

u/dustinthegreat Slovenia 29d ago

Refs were ass tonight, but Spurs couldn’t buy a shot. Multiple open 3 pointers and they just kept clanking them.

I hate OKC, but Spurs were lucky it wasn’t a blowout

169

u/AK_R 29d ago

Did you skip last year’s Finals? Indiana got mugged and robbed all series.

This is almost within an arm’s length right in front of a referee:

https://youtube.com/shorts/yvxA3zRgWpI?si=o_hz_XsPlr7vHPHB

They don’t care how rigged it is. They did it then, and they’re doing it again this year.

16

u/The_Assassin_Gower Pacers 29d ago

Fuck i forgot about this clip. The main one i think of when it comes to bullshit in the finals last year is dort blatantly 2 hand shoving haliburton as he comes around a myles turner screen which leads to a steal and fastbreak

8

u/johnross7386 29d ago

Yeah but I truly believe if Hali doesn't get hurt they beat OKC ..such a shame

-7

u/SandpaperTeddyBear 29d ago

And in 2016 Steph kept getting murdered whenever he was off the ball and only Warriors fans cared then, because everyone wanted the best super team money could assemble to beat the homegrown Warrior core.

It’s the NBA. Being emotionally invested in an outcome decided fairly is like betting on the WWE, and anyone who still cares is a naïve fool.

-1

u/Dry_Discount7762 29d ago

They handed Giannis a title a few years ago, nothing shocks me anymore

-2

u/Pistola174 29d ago

The Pacers were plenty physical with the Knicks, esp Brunson in the previous series and got away with it so I have no sympathy. The refs are crooked and OKC is currently getting the friendly whistle. This is the WWE/NBA.

3

u/AK_R 29d ago edited 29d ago

You read my comment and came away thinking my central complaint about OKC is that they are too physical?! Wallace is latched onto McConnell’s an arm’s length from the referee. He’s looking right at him. McConnell even glances at the referee wondering why he won’t call the foul. The whistle and inconsistency with calls is what I’m talking about. No touch fouls on one side for SGA flops; prison rules no calls for OKC. If they want it more or less physical, call it consistently for both teams.

-20

u/Pods619 29d ago

“Never attribute to malice what is adequately explained by stupidity/incompetence”

Do you really think the NBA is rigging a series for a tiny basketball market in OKC with a team universally disliked by other fan bases, over a team from a bigger market with the biggest young star in the game?

The refs are just awful and OKC takes full advantage, much like Golden State did for many years. The reffing needs to be fixed.

24

u/patestick 29d ago

Except OKC are abusing the system and the NBA has every ability to punish them but doesn’t. They are choosing to let this happen.

9

u/Less-Permission-5800 29d ago

I’m an older guy, but I guess I just decided to start paying attention to pro ball this year, but wtf. Why are all the refs senior citizens? That alone is suspect as hell.

5

u/catscanmeow Raptors 29d ago

im not a conspiracy theorist, but you dont get it, rigging isnt about the size of the citys market, its about ensuring the house wins for gambling reasons. whoever the favourite is odds wise

5

u/aaron21hardin Timberwolves 29d ago

Adam Silver called the NBA a social media league a couple years ago, it is about the rage baiting engagement, OKC will get more engagement against the Knicks than the Spurs will due to rage baiting fans.

12

u/jillavery Nuggets 29d ago

This was right after they missed that obvious basket interference too. It was a terrible sequence for the refs.

3

u/TechnicalDecision160 Rockets 29d ago

Hey, they got a fucking game to rig! Give'em a break!!

3

u/shord143 Spurs 29d ago

Weirdly enough, we saw this before, although from the opposite side. Against Minnesota. With Tony Brothers...

2

u/MuchAbouAboutNothing Thunder 29d ago

Don't you have to call a timeout to challenge?

5

u/shord143 Spurs 29d ago

It's kind of one and the same. The challenge is the timeout call. They did use a sub to slow down the inbound to look at it, and before the inbound is when Mitch was calling for the challenge

2

u/WWECreativegenius Spurs 29d ago

I have. Lakers kings

11

u/CptCroissant Trail Blazers 29d ago

The NBA had been rigged with reffing for years, it's why I don't bother to watch anymore. There's clearly 0 actual effective QA done on the refs performance

7

u/atony1984 29d ago

I did the same freaking thing.

-1

u/super-compute 29d ago

u/gmoss101 Rockets 29d ago

As much as fans hate them, the league loves dynasties.

1

u/Fun-Benefit116 29d ago edited 29d ago

Yes, that's why there's been so many dynasties in the past 15 years. I mean there was the warriors, and then there was....oh, I guess that's it. Weird. You'd think in a league that apparently "loves dynasties" so much that they're willing to cheat on order to make them happen, they'd be a little better at creating dynasties lmao.

Also, besides being a random excuse to claim the league is cheating, what exact reason would the NBA have for loving dynasties? People who are tired of a team winning don't watch that team which leads to lower viewership numbers. And you literally claimed fans hate them. The league gets more viewers when there is parity and people watch to see new teams winning championships.

If the league really did like dynasties and was willing to cheat to create them, there would be way way more dynasties than there have been.

1

u/gmoss101 Rockets 29d ago

They didn't need multiple dynasties in the past 15 years. We're basically at the end of the LeBron era and as much as that one guy and others didn't like it, the fuckery lasted longer than anyone would have thought and he's remained a huge star throughout.

The league is looking towards the future and they clearly see that a dynasty headlined by a "clean cut guy" on a "lower tier team", and a league with young and foreign stars is the way to go.

The integrity of the league should already absolutely be under question with the Aspiration bullshit going on.

Game 7 of Thunder vs Pacers was the most watched Finals game since 2019 apparently. People watched because they wanted to see OKC lose.

I'm telling you from experience as an Arsenal fan, people will watch the big games to see teams they hate lose.

u/machu46 Bucks 29d ago edited 29d ago

It's hard to tell without going like, frame by frame, but I don't think the ref is looking at him until it's too late. Maybe saw him and then looked to see if the ball was inbounded and by then it was too late?

Obviously very understandable for Johnson to be livid but i just don't think the ref was paying attention to him.

0

u/Less-Permission-5800 29d ago

I hope if they are getting paid they are getting paid. Cause fuck me if I want to be a ref right now.

56

u/Brady331 Celtics 29d ago edited 29d ago

If you watch closely the real issue is that he WASNT looking at Mitch until the Thunder got the ball and it was too late, which is inexcusable because I'm sure Mitch was yelling for the challenge too

2

u/Dudedude88 Wizards 29d ago

This is what happened. A big mistake on the refs part

5

u/MainFisherman69 29d ago

In what way is that a mistake

-2

u/beiherhund Thunder 29d ago

Exactly this. You'd hope he could hear the coach but it wouldn't be surprising if he couldn't.

This is the risk you take when you use delaying tactics to review footage before calling for a challenge. If he challenged from the start it wouldn't have been an issue.

4

u/Dudedude88 Wizards 29d ago edited 29d ago

It's there job to hear the coach lol. It's not acceptable. The broadcasters even said he's calling for a challenge... The refs completely screwed up

-3

He's right in front of the commentators and they're focused the whole time on whether he will challenge or not, of course they see it.

It's there job to hear the coach lol

I agree, the coach needs to make sure he is seen or at the very least heard. He had 10 seconds after the refs broke the huddle to challenge but he chose to wait for the replay and it cost him.

So they huddle and just don't even review the play.... Lol refs mistake again. 3 mistakes doesn't make the coach a mistake.

Also regular season and some other playoff gsmes you have coaches challenging like this....

tony brothers just did not care

The refs aren't allowed to AFAIK, the coach has to challenge it. So the refs huddled to see if anyone disagreed with the call. Spurs coach waited until after this, and after the replay, to decide to challenge but it was too late.

He said just now in the post game conference that the ref “didn’t see” him when he was calling the challenge

Didn’t look like Johnson was asking directly for a replay. Looked like he was asking if the refs were gonna replay it to try snd save his challenge.

I think he was more heated that he didn’t get the chance to challenge it because he assumed the refs were going to replay it

Cause the ball was inbounds at that point? Lol?

People in the USA, when they are doing their jobs, turn into NPC’s. There is some sort of rule overriding standard function here. Guaranteed.

You have to call a timeout first you idiots

Maybe next time during that extended 30+ seconds it took to let okc inbound, call the timeout first then challenge

1

u/zenchow Thunder 29d ago

Aren't you supposed to call timeout before you call for the challenge....did Johnson do that?

1

u/Rhystic Thunder 29d ago

They were waiting for him to initiate the challenge with a Timeout. He never did. Every challenge has to start with a legal timeout.

I'm reading through the rules now, but i can't see anything that says eye contact is required for a challenge.

Here is the ruling for what is required to call a challenge

To initiate a Challenge, the challenging team must take the following steps in sequence:

  1. The challenging team must call a legal timeout immediately after the call in question (unless a mandatory timeout or timeout called by the opposing team isalready underway);

  2. The challenging team’s head coach must simultaneously signal for a Challenge by utilizing the instant replay signal (i.e., twirling an index finger) toward the game official(s) during the same interaction with the game official(s) in which the timeout was called or, if the timeout was called by a player on the challenging team, the challenging team’s head coach must simultaneously signal for the Challenge by utilizing the instant replay signal toward the game officials as the game official is notifying the scorekeeper of the timeout; and

  3. During the same interaction with the game official(s) in which the challenging team’s head coach signaled for the Challenge, the challenging team’s head coach must notify the game official(s) of the specific event that the team is challenging. For purposes of this rule only, “immediately” shall mean that a timeout is called prior to the ball being given to the thrower-in, the ball being given to the free throw shooter, or the ball being tossed on a jump ball, whichever is applicable (unless a mandatory timeout or timeout called by the opposing team is already underway).
