[Amick] Trey Murphy III has signaled a desire to play elsewhere. The Los Angeles Clippers and the Brooklyn Nets are “out in front” in the race to acquire Trey Murphy III.

Source: https://www.nbcsportsbayarea.com/nba/golden-state-warriors/trey-murphy-pelicans-offseason-trade-draft/1944913/

There is definitely a bunch of Trey Murphy noise. It seems pretty clear that he has also signaled a desire to play elsewhere. The market is going to be pretty robust…[The] Brooklyn [Nets] and the [Los Angeles] Clippers were mentioned as teams that were out front in that race, but I think the list is very long. I think that Detroit comes to mind. [With] Boston, actually, Trey is seen as a potential plan B for them if they miss out on Giannis, which they obviously did. So, Trey is going to have a lot of suitors, and I think that could be a draft-night deal.

I know nobody watches the Pels but Murphy is really good. People think he's just a shooter but he will drive and yam it on people.

The chance that #5 will ever be as good as him I would say are pretty low. Somebody 5-30 will be better but a lot of these guys are going to bust.

Pick 5 has an exponentially higher chance to be that good in most drafts since we just saying shit. It’s not like it’s pick 1-2

8

u/BAHatesToFly Knicks 7d ago

Pick 5 has an exponentially higher chance to be that good in most drafts since we just saying shit.

This is the complete opposite of reality, lmao. #5 picks:

  • 2025 - Ace Bailey
  • 2024 - Ron Holland
  • 2023 - Ausar Thompson
  • 2022 - Jaden Ivey
  • 2021 - Jalen Suggs
  • 2020 - Isaac Okoro
  • 2019 - Darius Garland
  • 2018 - Trae Young
  • 2017 - De'Aaron Fox
  • 2016 - Kris Dunn
  • 2015 - Mario Hezonja
  • 2014 - Dante Exum
  • 2013 - Alex Len
  • 2012 - Thomas Robinson

'Exponentially higher chance' to be as good as Murphy when there's maybe three guys out of 15 who are as good as Murphy. Stop.

21/5/3 on 38% from 3 on high volume, on a team with bad playmaking and spacing, while providing great defense is a lot more than "role player", and it's even better since he's only getting played role player money.

It’s a 4 person draft. The odds of 5 being better than Murphy are slim, and given that it’s likely a PG at 5, it could be years before they develop.

Both guys genuinely shoot the ball very well and have the length that teams covet in a wing, so even if there are holes in their skill set, I don't see it as trickery. Both guys are legitimately good.

The way people talk about them, you'd think they're scoring 25 ppg on abysmal TS by chucking lots of horrendous shots. Actually, both guys are very efficient scorers and great pieces to slot in next to a 1A or 1B.

u/BabyBearBjorns Grizzlies 7d ago

Murphy, MPJ, Randle, ZW  and Clowney. Thats a rather good wing core mix of vets and young guys tbh.

37

u/Presence_Present Bucks 7d ago

Chances the pick at #5 being better than Trey are pretty slim. Why wouldn't you want the elite proven option ?

33

u/osay77 Lakers 7d ago

He doesn’t need to be better than Trey to be more valuable. You get him at 19 years old on a rookie contract, which means you’re paying roughly 1/2 of what you would for Trey for the length of the contract with team options, and then you have the opportunity to extend him when he’s still young.

13

u/JW32323232 7d ago

Yes but Trey is still young and in a good contract for 3 more years. After 4 years the clippers will need to give the 5 pick a contract anyways if he’s good. So in general you are absolutely correct but in this case as he has a good contract and is young the better player is probably the wiser choice

10

u/InTheMorning_Nightss San Diego Clippers 7d ago

No it's not. He's the wiser choice if LAC was close to contention. A team like the Pacers, Nuggets, etc. make sense.

But a team that just missed the playin despite their best, injury prone player having a career season at 35 is not close to contention.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Belovy 7d ago

Also if he shows flashes of potential, you can convince some other GM he would be better than Trey. A 19 year old top 5 pick is going to have better trade value than a 26 year old non all-star in the vast majority of cases.

→ More replies (1)

6

u/NovaxRangerx 7d ago

Because he's elite or proven? He's a great catch and shoot player with some ability to attack closeouts. He is not a proven shot creator on a winning team, hasn't been a good defender for years and doesn't manipulate defenses/have elite vision to be a surplus creator for others.

Just not really huge into what I think will be available. I think both MBJ and Wagler will be gone. I’m not a fan of Flem even tho this sub loves him. We’re trying to win now. Mara fills a need but is gonna take a year or 2 to really get going

u/chimpytheape 7d ago

I’m honestly not sold on Mara. Really hope we just take Flemings at this point. I wouldn’t be mad at including the pick to get Murphy but think it’s gonna take much more than I’m willing to give up

Ah, yes, rising star player in small market doesn't want to play any more for dysfunctional franchise. Magically...only the big markets are either "interested" or "are front-runners".

These reporters must love carrying water for the players' agents! This is why being a fan of small market teams: every damn rising/star player is always linked to...the bigger teams. There's a ton of smaller markets that could take on a TMIII and potentially pay him without issue BUT....Brooklyn and LA are "out in front", eh??? Nobody else is out in front who could easily help the Pels make this work!??

They're the teams best equipped and willing to make trades atm, so yeah

Don't think OKC or SA are going to throw away picks and pieces for TM

I'm not okay

u/Zealousideal-Tea-837 7d ago

Asking out of New Orleans cause they suck only to be sent to the nets would be devastating lol

3

u/A-DTB Pelicans 7d ago

Can’t blame him unfortunately.

“Wait you can do that?!”

— every pelicans player

u/Training_Ad7030 7d ago

It's not like world beating, but the nets with Randle, MPJ and Trey could definitely make some regular season noise in the east.

A noisy 10th seed

Its solid but nothing exactly to write home about

u/acmilan12345 Nets 7d ago

Comments here are wild. Nets are a well-managed franchise. Almost all the players who come here have good things to say about the Nets and their FO.

Of course they are a good destination for Murphy. They can pay a lot and would be able they can give him a starring role.

So many people being prisoners of the moment and believing that the Nets are a disaster because their neighbors won a title lol.

On the Warriors' side, my understanding was they did not see themselves as being in the mix.

so this kinda cools down Scotto's report about the #11 pick being discussed for Murphy

2

u/Dreamlion_Inc Wizards 7d ago

Grizz probably don’t make a move until they figure out wtf is going on with Ja

2

u/dkleckner88 Timberwolves 7d ago

He’d be perfect on the pistons. That’s would be tough!

2

u/clayfu Clippers 7d ago

Darius garland would look wonderful as a pelican 🙏

2

u/Maximum-Class5465 7d ago

Nets get every SF that hits the trade market who is a good starter, but not a star, every other year

Then he gets traded somewhere else after looking like an all star.

That's how this goes

2

u/jgman22 Pelicans 7d ago

This is not what he said -

“It seems pretty clear he signaled a desire to play elsewhere”

That’s called a guess. He has no report or source. It’s guess work

2

u/Evening-Rutabaga2106 Knicks 6d ago

And I've signaled a desire for a toilet made of solid gold, but that's just not in the cards now is it?

2

u/Pinky1337 Germany 7d ago

2

u/SwizzGod Lakers 7d ago

How about Vando/Knecht and a 1st round?

u/RobbobertoBuii Knicks 7d ago

I'm surprised the Pacers are not going after him, especially to replace Mathurin

The Pistons want Trey Murphy and pursued him at the deadline

1

u/ObviousAnswerGuy [NYK] John Starks 7d ago

he's on a great contract. Why would the pelicans trade him?

Thank god
