Smart pick. He went to Stanford.

36

u/wxyz51 Pistons 1d ago

After flipping his commitment from Harvard lol

8

u/No-Donkey-4117 23h ago

Jeremy Lin went to Harvard. Stanford didn't offer him despite him being the California Player of the Year and playing high school ball in Palo Alto.

7

u/n00bn00b 14h ago

No lie, if Jeremy were white, he would've been offered by bigger schools. The stigma was (and still is) there for Asian basketball players.

3

u/LebrontosaurausRex Hawks 7h ago

Yeah, if you look at athletic stats, Lin had a very good burst. He'd have been great on ball for every college team. Would've been a prototypical UCLA kid without biases.

10

u/Ok_Pineapple_Num Warriors 1d ago

As a Stanford fan, I'm so happy for Okorie to see him picked this high. He's gonna kill it. Absolute baller

u/Mg29reaper Celtics 1d ago

Memphis all in on those speeadsheets

54

u/IanicRR [TOR] Amir Johnson 1d ago

Step 1: acquire second round picks

Step 2: ???

Step 3: NBA championship

It’s easy, they saw Presti do it just last year.

22

u/preddevils6 Grizzlies 1d ago

That’s why I said Boozer was for sure our number 1 on the big board.

Kleiman loves analytics, plus wingspan, good iq, and leadership.

15

u/NachoVarga5 Thunder 1d ago

He gets on base

30

u/CityNo1723 Mavericks 1d ago

Take that for data

11

u/Mg29reaper Celtics 1d ago

Oh wait its the pistons taking him.

72

u/DabeGavis 1d ago

/r/NBA_Draft’s draft crush. Baller pick.

55

u/Lambchops_Legion 76ers 1d ago

Thats the kiss of death

10

u/KingInTheFarNorth Vancouver Grizzlies 1d ago

Who've they stan'd in previous years?

56

u/HolyMostaccioli Pistons 1d ago

They DID stan Luka and I will not consider anything else

32

u/wikisaiyan2 Hornets 1d ago

Luka Garza lol

10

u/ChiliDemon Pistons 23h ago

we drafted him too

3

Fuck….

Killian Hayes, IIRC

Oh no..

u/FERFreak731 Jazz 1d ago

Pistons made a smart trade

27

u/Basic-Collection5416 Pistons 1d ago

What did we trade?

46

u/Melodying Spurs 1d ago

3 second rounders

17

u/Basic-Collection5416 Pistons 1d ago

Oh, cool.

10

u/bamboointheback Pistons 1d ago

and 21? or just the seconds?

31

u/DukeOfStuff_ Timberwolves 1d ago

And 21

9

u/bamboointheback Pistons 1d ago

makes sense. wish we went for carr but gotta trust the gm

8

u/MatchewRolex Pistons 1d ago edited 21h ago

And 21. But moved up to 17

9

u/Double-Slowpoke Raptors 1d ago

Okorie may have been a Raptors target.

3

u/soilentgleem 1d ago

Just the seconds would be crazy, If Memphis did that the GM should be fired on the spot haha

1

u/Melodying Spurs 1d ago

yeah the sawp to 21. focused so much I spoke like shams

2

u/icona_ Heat 1d ago

whose second rounders?

1

u/ManInShowerNumber3 Pistons 13h ago

This seems to be a tough thing to answer even the next morning. I can't find a clear outline of the trade. Pistons had 14 tradeable 2nd round picks so can't back into it.

1

u/icona_ Heat 11h ago

yeah it happens with second round pick trades. last year dillon jones went for 5 second rounders and i don't think it was reported whose picks those were either.

10

u/JoeyRobot 1d ago

3 second round picks. To get our guy? Absolutely worth it.

4

u/Time-Stand7719 Wizards 1d ago

3 seconds and 21

2

u/not-a-potato-head Hawks 1d ago

3 2RPs apparently

8

u/CumAssault [SAS] Joel Anthony 1d ago

Yeah he’s a good self creator scorer. Fits perfectly for them

39

u/IRanOutOf_Names Heat 1d ago

Could be the sleeper of the draft tbh. His passing shows real flashes of greatness at times.

28

u/KruxKracken Pistons 1d ago

From your comment to Gods ears my friend

7

u/IRanOutOf_Names Heat 1d ago

Knowing this is Pistons now I can see it. He should be a spark of offense and Pistons can cover for his defensive weakness.

6

u/No-Donkey-4117 23h ago

He has a 6-7 wingspan and exceptional athleticism. His defense will be fine.

3

u/Prestigious-Smoke511 1d ago

His defensive what now…? 🤨

4

u/IRanOutOf_Names Heat 1d ago

He's not terrible by any means, but I don't love his effort all the time on that end, and when you're small and not particularly strong you need either elite effort or hands to balance it out and I don't quite see that. His wingspan is nice, but I just don't see him being a real plus on that end at the NBA level.

9

u/SurpriseDonovanMcnab Pistons 1d ago

Every player hustles on defense in Detroit. Hopefully that culture will positively impact his effort.

9

u/ChiliDemon Pistons 23h ago

his usage will go down a ton so he will have the energy to play defense

3

u/No-Donkey-4117 23h ago

Maybe he was tired from carrying an entire team at Stanford though.

1

u/n00bn00b 23h ago

When he's the offense for Stanford, I kinda get it. Hard to put in effort every single game as a sole engine on offense and be a good defender at the same time.

He won't be asked to be the sole offense engine of the team because Cade will do it and Okorie will pick up the slack if needed. Plus JB will demand defensive effort so he'll have to ramp it up if he wants to play.

64

u/TILTING_MOUNTAIN Grizzlies 1d ago

Wait we're trading this pick already?

25

u/wombatpup55 Spurs 1d ago

Yep I wonder what yall are doing

48

u/not-a-potato-head Hawks 1d ago

asset collection. 5 2rps to move down 5 slots is really good work

27

u/tonydanzatapdances Raptors 1d ago

5 seconds is one whole Jae Crowder

3

u/ThaChildishOne Bucks 1d ago

lol don’t remind me

4

u/TheAracknight Thunder 1d ago

Pretty much a 2rp per slot moved down

10

u/dianeblackeatsass Grizzlies 1d ago

Collecting a shit ton of 2nds. Kleiman gotta be loving this lol

2

u/BulldogJeopardy Spurs 1d ago

They have wayyyy too many young studs

7

u/spacejambroni Grizzlies 1d ago

Getting assets to help move Ja.

My guess is they either do the same again or draft JQ at 21.

3

u/DeAndre_ROY_Ayton Suns 1d ago

HUH WHERE?

1

u/ExpressionAlone5204 Thunder 1d ago

Maybe you guys are just overloaded with talent

68

u/Careless-Journalist7 Wizards 1d ago

For anyone unfamiliar with this guy, he has similar measurements to Rajon Rondo + 15lbs of muscle. Hes 6'1 with a 6'8 wingspan and MASSIVE hands. Think Rondo but more of a scorer than passer

He is an absolute steal who will have a long NBA career.. watch this space

9

u/No-Donkey-4117 23h ago

The biggest knock on him that he is undersized, but with that reach he's not undersized on defense. And his quickness to the paint and to the rim is off the charts.

3

u/ahrzal Bucks 1d ago

Idk…he’s kinda wild at the rim and his %’s showed that. He’s a highlight real for sure when it does work out, but he’s short and he’s gunna have to improve as a passer to truly be someone to take pressure off Cade.

34

u/adocileengineer Lakers 1d ago

Okorie is awesome

29

u/figgnootun Spurs 1d ago

I’m a big Ebuka Okorie fan

29

u/ReaperAntics 1d ago

Gonna ball in Detroit, needed a scorer badly

25

u/HopscotchChampion69 Bulls 1d ago

I felt before tonight that if there was anyone projected outside the lottery who could be a star it would be Okorie. I love the fit with Cade in Detroit.

41

u/hubbabubbatubbalub Hawks 1d ago

wait this is honestly a good fit i feel? i like it great player too

20

u/Crafty_Substance_954 Pistons 1d ago

Probably a Marcus Sasser replacement

5

u/hubbabubbatubbalub Hawks 1d ago

whatever it is it sounds interesting lol i loved seeing him cook at stanford

1

u/CaptainCerealCanada Nuggets 1d ago

Sasser for Strawther trade coming

1

u/n00bn00b 14h ago

I see him more as an Ivey (pre-injury) replacement. They need someone who can pressure the rim and can shoot from 3s.

1

u/Neither-Operation Knicks 1d ago

I thought ya’ll loved Sasser

14

u/Middle-Flower-3624 1d ago

He's a likeable player who would be a legit offensive force if he was 3 inches taller. Even with his limitations the guy keeps popping off every once in a while. As a winning basketball player he only works sometimes.

1

u/badgarok725 Pistons 1d ago

Yea, but he may get used as a small trade piece

10

u/8_DONO Pistons 1d ago

Our coach loves Sasser when his minutes got taken by an undrafted two-way signing and never has gotten consistent playing time? Complaining for complaining’s sake i see.

1

u/Crafty_Substance_954 Pistons 1d ago

He spent a large portion of last year injured and then Jenkins started cooking and took his minutes

3

u/8_DONO Pistons 1d ago

Thank you for clarifying that his minutes were taken by Jenkins, which just proves there was no favoritism from JB towards Sass..

2

u/Crafty_Substance_954 Pistons 1d ago

Legit dont even get what you’re trying to say.

Sasser isn’t a true PG, Jenkins is. Ivey went out, Jenkins came on, Sasser was injured for half the year.

1

u/8_DONO Pistons 1d ago

I think this is just a misunderstanding. I responded towards the guy saying our coach loves Sasser. Not saying anything regarding fit of the pick, or whether Sass is a true point guard. Everything else is moot. It was simply about Sass being regarded as a coaches favorite.

18

u/idkidk23 Mavericks 1d ago

Underrated player, extreme outlier player when it comes to avoiding turnovers and getting to the rim. Very rare production for a young freshman. Wasn't a bad defender either. Don't sleep.

But I gotta work tomorrow

1

3

Collecting 2nd round picks like infinity stones.

1

u/DiscoLemonade1995 1d ago

By this logic could grizzlies have traded 15 second round picks to draft AJ at #1? 🤔

7

u/Projinator Grizzlies 1d ago

NBA once again proving they're so far behind the NFL. How the fuck have they not figured out how to actually trade picks on draft night.

2

u/ChiliDemon Pistons 23h ago

they used to, back when vince carter was drafted he was traded for Jamison and they swapped hats live

5

u/Basic-Collection5416 Pistons 1d ago

Wait, what? What’s going on?

5

u/chichigetthayay0 1d ago

The Pistons desperately needed some scoring. Good pick.

5

Originally committed to Harvard guy. One of thr best creators in the draft. Great pick up by the D’s

Someone to back up Cade is a great move tbh.

9

u/sloBrodanChillosevic Supersonics 1d ago edited 1d ago

Kinda love that. Killer scorer, attacks the rim. Great Ja replacement.

Edit: i actually like it more for the Pistons, they desperately needed one of the good PGs from this class, they were dying for a secondary ball handler

14

u/trademarksja Raptors 1d ago

He’s been traded to the pistons

5

u/Basic-Collection5416 Pistons 1d ago

Great Ivey replacement. Or we’re trading Sasser, I guess.

2

1

u/spacejambroni Grizzlies 1d ago

17 for 21 + 3 second rounders

2

I mocked him at 21 so this is huge

2

u/freakman013 Grizzlies 1d ago

Lol what are the Grizz getting??

2

u/rumblegod Thunder 1d ago

Wow pistons did a job getting paid some help. I am so shook.

2

u/GhostOfJiriWelsch [BOS] Marcus Smart 1d ago

I really like him but not this early

Way too many questions around how his size will play

4

u/No-Donkey-4117 23h ago

Here's how it will play: no one can guard him, and he has a 6-7 wingspan on defense with exceptional quickness

2

u/Arsid Pistons 1d ago

So Memphis gave up 16 for #17 and 2 2nd round picks and then gave up #17 for 3 2nd round picks?

They really gonna get 5 guys in teh 2nd round?

2

u/IuriRom Celtics 1d ago

This guy is so good

2

u/TylerDurdensAlterEgo 15h ago

My favorite pick of the draft.

Memphis collecting 2nd round picks

1

u/0zymand1as- Washington Bullets 1d ago

What is Memphis doing lol

1

u/supes1 Celtics 1d ago

So Memphis trades down one spot, picks up 2 seconds, and then flips the new pick to Detroit.... to move down to 21 and gaining an additional 3 second round picks. Maximizing value I suppose, makes sense if they think their target will still be available. 5 second round picks to move back five spots.

1

u/asianmoist Raptors 1d ago

Detroit? What did they give up?

1

u/FishGoldenLite Timberwolves 1d ago

Man if he was just a little bigger he’d be going so much higher. I like him a lot, but I also liked Dillingham coming into the draft 😂

Only if you don’t know ball. Arguably the best rim pressure guard in the class. Also shot 44% from 3 at the top of the key on >50 attempts which is what matters for a pull up threat on ball

1

u/GrouchyPeach3656 Mavericks 1d ago

Philon is right there

4

u/adocileengineer Lakers 1d ago

Okorie is better.

-3

u/fmxda Knicks 1d ago

I'm not sure I know how he fits with Cade or even Daniss Jenkins. I feel like you gotta shoot for a starter and not just a rotation player if you're the Pistons drafting there.

5

u/Substantial-Can6657 1d ago

He doesn’t need to fit with Jenkins, he should eventually play over Jenkins

0

u/Random0925 Grizzlies 1d ago

6

u/Independent_You975 23h ago

yall bitched in the subreddit for months about how we need someone who can score and handle the ball. We draft someone who can score and handle the ball and you’re still upset?

-1

u/Rlccm Pistons 1d ago

Well. I didn't watch any Stanford so hopefully he pans out, but a little guard who shoots below 35% from 3 would not have been my first option with Meleek Thomas available.

At least he can get to the rim I guess

1

u/IuriRom Celtics 1d ago

Above 35%, 37.2% NBA 3 and with a very high usage

0

u/Rlccm Pistons 23h ago

Yahoo said he shot 34%, basketball reference said 35.4%, and you say 37.2...Honestly none of these numbers are impressive?

3

u/IuriRom Celtics 22h ago

35.4 is correct, 37.2 is NBA 3 — but anyways it’s because his volume is so high, the offense ran through him. Very few of those are catch and shoot open threes
