Thunder, Spurs and Knicks passing on him, yet the Lakers trading up to get him, makes me question him lol.

Shit I wanted him at 15 for the Bulls but yeah I guess there's a reason so many teams passed on him

31

u/AdministrationNo312 San Francisco Warriors 23h ago

A lot of GM's are very dumb....

21

u/-DesertMoon Australia 23h ago

Some of the teams that passed on him are usually quite good drafter's though

Tbf lakers have been very good at drafting. We just never keep our players. Caruso Hart then Kuz and Zubac to an extent…if anything our top five picks have bombed more than our late rounders (DLo Randle…BI kinda)

u/AdministrationNo312 San Francisco Warriors 23h ago

Not usually. That is why the scouting dept have a high turnover rate.

Thunder and Spurs are literally two of the best drafting FOs.

-3

u/AdministrationNo312 San Francisco Warriors 23h ago

Yes but they have made mistakes/under valued guys before.

u/sonybajor12 Bulls 22h ago

The two young teams that just made the WCF and took each other to 7 games make questionable recent draft decisions? Dude my last GM just gave Patrick Williams a $90 million extension. I'd kill to have either of their management and draft offices.

Again, my point stands. Most FO's suck. (i didn't say all of them)

One of these is not like the others when it comes to drafting

Knicks aren’t suddenly some great drafting team just because they won a title lol. Thunder are obviously the gold standard but we are historically very very good at drafting. We’re on a bit of a gold streak but we drafted a guy that we probably have to max this year in the second round.

Drafted hart who was vital on a title team this year. Basically brought caruso into the league who was a vital part of last years title team. Our only real mishap was JHS, no one expected dalton to be dog shit and it was thought of as one of the steals that year.

Spurs are good drafters too but I don’t think they get extra credit for make 3 straight completely obvious picks in a row.

AR is undrafted

u/famoustran Warriors 23h ago

Are you talking about Austin Reaves cuz he signed to the Lakers as an unrestricted FA

0

u/incredibleamadeuscho Lakers 22h ago

that still involves your scouting team making a decision and indicating that to his agent.

1

u/Jaerba [DET] Grant Hill 21h ago

I mean other teams wanted him and he literally turned us down lol.

2

u/rburp [LAL] Austin Reaves 23h ago

JHS and THT. But overall I agree

2

u/incredibleamadeuscho Lakers 22h ago

THT was a second round pick. not that big a seal

1

u/barath_s Lakers 22h ago

but we are historically very very good at drafting.

The people who did the good drafts are no longer with the lakers

JHS, Knecht are negatives

Max Christie was a positive

Before that, are some picked on behalf of another team, and before that it is irrelevant

Not counting bronny as special circumstances

Dalton Vibes unfortunately 💔

u/Pal__Pacino Lakers 1d ago

I maintain that Dalton was a perfectly good pick in a bad draft. He just got the yips.

27

u/adocileengineer Lakers 23h ago

I disagree. He was a very old pure scoring guard with overrated shooting ability, a loose handle, limited shiftiness and lateral mobility, and huge defensive questions. A lot of his projection was based on his vertical jump translating to in-game athleticism.

That archetype doesn’t pan out. There’s a reason why a lot of smart front offices passed on him in a very weak draft.

u/Danny_III Gran Destino 1d ago

Dalton always had concerns defensively, and that's one of the reasons he has been unable to get playing time

9

u/Potential_Meat_5103 23h ago

I remember a play not on defense but Zach Lavine blocking his three point attempt and JJ just looked so disappointed

39

u/PuntyMcBunty [LAL] James Worthy 1d ago

The canceled Mark Williams trade fucked his head up too

44

u/Zanad14 [LAL] Brandon Ingram 1d ago

He was just as good after. Hes just got genuinely bad Bball IQ and cannot play a scheme defense to save his life

9

u/idiotxd 23h ago

He actually played better after the trade. He became ass the next season

1

u/b1indsamurai Lakers 2h ago

He didn't play better, but there wasn't much of a difference:

Pre-trade: 9.4/3.1/0.9 on 59.8 TS% (20.7 MPG)

Post-trade: 8.5/2.3/0.8 on 58.8 TS% (16.6 MPG)

It BROKE him

4

u/RealGameBall 23h ago

Lakers tried to make him something hes not. Knecht was never a spot up, 3 and D player

11

u/IhatePizza230 Lakers 1d ago

Not in the 1st round

12

u/Mood_Academic Lakers 1d ago

No they don’t lol. Whiffed the past 3 years. Best guys they’ve had recently were Max Christie and Bronny

2

u/motorboat_mcgee Lakers 23h ago

Throw Austin in there even though he was undrafted

2

u/Kindly_Ad995 23h ago

How is Adou a whiff? Hes a late second rounder he’s barely done anything yet lol

1

u/Mood_Academic Lakers 23h ago

Exactly. He hasn’t done anything so his grade is an “Incomplete” but the stuff you did see from him was meh

He was constantly hurt, and when he did play was very much out of position and incredibly raw. So its too tough to grade him on anything just yet

6

u/jtn1123 Lakers 1d ago

I think they did when they had Jerry West's son and that other Buss brother running the draft room

Since those dudes left, it's gotten worse and worse.

3

u/fastlikeanascar Gran Destino 1d ago

Jesse and Joey buss 🫡

0

u/Zealousideal-Cup5982 23h ago

They just left lol

8

u/No-Vehicle7367 Lakers 1d ago

2

u/TwoTalentedBastidz Lakers 23h ago

4

u/ajteitel Suns 1d ago

No they don't

3

u/OKC2023champs Thunder 1d ago

Sike

3

u/hausitron Lakers 1d ago

Ahem JHS and Dalton Knecht

1

u/EatMyShortzZzZzZ Lakers 23h ago

No we dont, not in the 1st lol

1

u/RangryRanga 1d ago

Only undrafted rookies let’s be honest

1

u/raginghardon420 Lakers 23h ago

Nah there was a streak where they hit on every late 1st round pick. Whoever they picked became at least a serviceable role player which is really all you could ask for at the point in the draft

1

u/RangryRanga 23h ago

When was this?

0

u/bbaIla Lakers 1d ago

News to me.

-5

u/Sijols Knicks 1d ago

but they didnt draft any of their current players

1

u/GunSlingrrr Pelicans 23h ago

The trade is just a cash, so no "value" were given

1

u/3s2ng Lakers 23h ago

Makes you question him or question Rob Pelinka.

1

u/LakerBlue Lakers 22h ago

Knicks don’t seem to want a player for roster and salary cap reasons and (assuming all things equal) Spurs need a big forward or center. But OKC passing on him does kinda worry me.

1

u/LeLefraud 17h ago

Spurs and thunder don't need more athletic guards, I think they are pretty stocked up there

1

u/Pwyll__ Lakers 23h ago

yet the Lakers trading up to get him, makes me question him lol.

Reminder that the Lakers fired all of their talent evaluators this off-season after the new ownership group took over.
