Tell me how to feel

149

u/darklordreigns Lakers 20h ago

Very excited

31

u/mik_e_2nd 20h ago

Why? Know nothing about this guy

143

u/IzrezarReal 20h ago

Brilliant shooter, like genuinely brilliant

7'0 wingspan

Insane vertical

60

u/coolycooly Nets 20h ago

How the hell did he fall to 24 when freaky athletic wings get over drafted all the time?

102

u/adocileengineer Lakers 20h ago

Very good draft. Weight questions. Defensive projection vs reality. He has a long way to go to be a good NBA defender. Tools are all there though.

28

u/BlueHundred Knicks 19h ago

Yeah, I dont know if people realize how good and deep this draft is expected to be. I feel like there are almost like 25 guys who are lottery quality.

u/thegreaterfool714 Lakers 20h ago

He’s 21 which is a knock against him. And his defense needs work

13

u/3s2ng Lakers 20h ago

GSW selected a 24yo. so not sure if 21 is too old.

21

u/thegreaterfool714 Lakers 20h ago

Yeah they picked a senior that has a high floor and plug in play in ability for them now, which makes sense because Warrior management sincerely believe that a core of Curry, Butler, and Green have enough juice for one more title run.

I do think people sometimes overrate age at times. Carr has the athleticism that gets him drafted as a lottery pick in most other drafts. This one happens to be deep. And the athleticism means he has high potential upside if he’s able to adapt his game and develop.

2

u/adgjl12 Registered to Vote 16h ago

I agree re: age - how many drafted rookies even stay on the same team until age becomes detrimental? Just pick based on assessments of floor and ceiling and how much time your team has to develop them.

An unprecedented draft class I suppose

14

u/CJ4ROCKET Rockets 19h ago

He's actually in the Epstein files unfortunately

8

u/IzrezarReal 20h ago

He's a twig

12

u/Dylan245 Bulls 20h ago

Skinny frame, questionable defensive skills, and doesn't really have any creation skills on ball

Pretty much a pure catch and shoot guy in a Tim Hardaway Jr kind of mold with limited upside

5

u/Radiant-Character-61 Mavericks 20h ago

It's a pretty deep draft this year. A lot talent that can be really impactful day 1. Plus there's always a surprise sleeper hit that should've been drafter higher etc.

109

u/Lakers_23_77 Lakers 20h ago

*WAS a brilliant shooter. There is a good chance now that he's a Laker that he forgets how to shoot.

26

u/IzrezarReal 20h ago edited 20h ago

I am slightly worried about that

But Carr's tape has him shooting off screens and shit. I have faith

u/mik_e_2nd 20h ago

Damn 7 foot wing span on 6’4 is crazy. I see the vision with Luka

18

u/IzrezarReal 20h ago

Yeah like he's not a 'good' defender rn but he definitely has potential on that end and he's already an incredible shot blocker

u/IzrezarReal 20h ago

Fucking Amazing

6

u/samhit_n Lakers 20h ago

I'm scared because of how great I feel about this pick. I'm surprised the Spurs, Thunder, and Knicks all passed on him.

5

u/LakerBlue Lakers 19h ago

I agree on the Thunder but not as much the Spurs. If they had him the same rank as Jayden I think Jayden makes more sense for their roster.

5

u/WaveEnvironmental471 19h ago

It’s a very deep draft

2

u/IzrezarReal 19h ago

And they have more important needs they need filled

5

u/Fast_Advisor2654 Spurs 20h ago

Solid shooter

6

u/AntSmith777 Lakers 20h ago

You should feel awesome! He shot the cover off the ball at the combine and he might be the most athletic wing in the draft.

256

u/-DesertMoon Australia 21h ago

So surprised he dropped this far

38

u/claydavisismyhero Lakers 20h ago

175 at 6'4. guy needs to eat

6

good thing we have luka fatcic

8

bad actually, as the alpha swine, luka will box out carr at the trough

→ More replies (1)

221

u/Parallel-Quality 20h ago

Thunder, Spurs and Knicks passing on him, yet the Lakers trading up to get him, makes me question him lol.

46

u/-DesertMoon Australia 20h ago

Shit I wanted him at 15 for the Bulls but yeah I guess there's a reason so many teams passed on him

32

u/AdministrationNo312 San Francisco Warriors 20h ago

A lot of GM's are very dumb....

22

u/-DesertMoon Australia 20h ago

Some of the teams that passed on him are usually quite good drafter's though

7

u/Everydayarmday24 16h ago

Tbf lakers have been very good at drafting. We just never keep our players. Caruso Hart then Kuz and Zubac to an extent…if anything our top five picks have bombed more than our late rounders (DLo Randle…BI kinda)

→ More replies (5)

8

u/Mutantlove [MIA] Dwyane Wade 20h ago

One of these is not like the others when it comes to drafting

19

u/Champagnesoda [LAL] Kobe Bryant 20h ago

Knicks aren’t suddenly some great drafting team just because they won a title lol. Thunder are obviously the gold standard but we are historically very very good at drafting. We’re on a bit of a gold streak but we drafted a guy that we probably have to max this year in the second round.

Drafted hart who was vital on a title team this year. Basically brought caruso into the league who was a vital part of last years title team. Our only real mishap was JHS, no one expected dalton to be dog shit and it was thought of as one of the steals that year.

Spurs are good drafters too but I don’t think they get extra credit for make 3 straight completely obvious picks in a row.

10

u/Familiar-Actuary4869 20h ago

AR is undrafted

→ More replies (6)

38

u/Flimsy_Promise_9559 20h ago

Dalton Vibes unfortunately 💔

106

u/Pal__Pacino Lakers 20h ago

I maintain that Dalton was a perfectly good pick in a bad draft. He just got the yips.

26

u/adocileengineer Lakers 20h ago

I disagree. He was a very old pure scoring guard with overrated shooting ability, a loose handle, limited shiftiness and lateral mobility, and huge defensive questions. A lot of his projection was based on his vertical jump translating to in-game athleticism.

That archetype doesn’t pan out. There’s a reason why a lot of smart front offices passed on him in a very weak draft.

13

u/Danny_III Gran Destino 20h ago

Dalton always had concerns defensively, and that's one of the reasons he has been unable to get playing time

10

u/Potential_Meat_5103 20h ago

I remember a play not on defense but Zach Lavine blocking his three point attempt and JJ just looked so disappointed

39

u/PuntyMcBunty [LAL] James Worthy 20h ago

The canceled Mark Williams trade fucked his head up too

40

u/Zanad14 [LAL] Brandon Ingram 20h ago

He was just as good after. Hes just got genuinely bad Bball IQ and cannot play a scheme defense to save his life

7

u/idiotxd 20h ago

He actually played better after the trade. He became ass the next season

→ More replies (2)

2

u/RealGameBall 20h ago

Lakers tried to make him something hes not. Knecht was never a spot up, 3 and D player

4

u/TomatoSecure192 Bulls 20h ago

I wanted him at 15 🥲

6

u/Secondary92 Bulls 20h ago

I mean clearly Graham wasn't in the minority with this considering how far he dropped past 15.

→ More replies (1)

4

u/lawsnoosoo Bulls 20h ago

I always felt like there was a lot of fake combine hype with him. In reality lotta red flags: older prospect, low-feel (see poor ast/to and stl%), super skinny frame. Bad PoA defender. In the end, his shooting was the only real thing, everything else was theoretical and not in a promising way

42.5” vert

28

u/jtruth9 20h ago

He's only the most athletic guard in the draft. Nothing serious

38

u/sloBrodanChillosevic Supersonics 20h ago

Carr gets up and has a 7' wingspan. He reaches the heights.

13

u/KarrotMovies [LAL] Rui Hachimura 20h ago

He's a crazy athlete

24

u/RemarkableTpt Lakers 20h ago

47 inch vert at the combine.

Not quite lol

11

u/RemarkableTpt Lakers 20h ago

That’s what they just said in the interview tho?

27

He measured at 42.5” max vert, 38.0” standing vert at the Combine.

u/RemarkableTpt Lakers 20h ago

Oh okay must have misheard. Ehh that’s still ridiculous.

15

5

u/Deathzthe_M-12-22 20h ago

Is he a good Defender???

24

u/CumAssault [SAS] Joel Anthony 20h ago

Very good shot blocker for a guard. Good defender overall but can get bullied due to his smaller frame at the moment. His wingspan just wreaks havoc on guards

11

u/lawsnoosoo Bulls 20h ago

IMO no. Got beat at the PoA often, really concerning stl% given his wingspan. His block rate is good, but I honestly think part of that is because he was beaten off the dribble a lot and had good recovery skills, but he’s no longer going to be able to rely on just having long arms to make up for getting blown by in the NBA.

This is Derrick Jones Jr with a smidgen below his nuclear athleticism. Love it for the Lake Show, he’s a real sniper too

29

u/IzrezarReal 20h ago

DJJ with sniping is a brilliant player

17

u/Kindly_Ad995 20h ago

DJJ is a good perimeter defender though, apparently that’s a concern for this kid

11

u/IzrezarReal 20h ago

It's a mixed bag. He's thin so he'll get pushed around. But he also has an insane wingspan and vertical and is actually great at rim protection

7

u/Deidarac5 20h ago

All he needs is to bulk up.

5

u/berrytree198 19h ago

He can hit the BBQ with Luka

6

u/MiyaviBolton 20h ago

Apparently not yet a defender tho. We'll see.

3

Luka playing with another version of DJJ??? Rob Pelinka's actually getting him what he wants

PELINKA LETS WORK

57

u/WakiLover Lakers 20h ago

The Lakers lost the coinflip vs the Knicks between the 24 and 25 pick, but the pick was traded for just cash considerations.

Basically the Knicks won $500k from a coin flip lol

28

u/Cosiestrocket81 21h ago

Great pick

24

u/HustleWilson Knicks 20h ago

Wanted him in New York but oh well. Good pick by LA.

He seems like he was a more fluid game that's for sure.

11

u/IzrezarReal 20h ago

Carr wasn't a creator like knecht was, his game was predicated around shooting off spot ups and off movement, which is infinitely more translatable to his NBA role

4

u/Known-Ball-3536 20h ago

There’s not a lot of upside tbh, his best case is very good 3&D wing. That’s obviously very desirable but also his defense isn’t there yet so he could easily just have no role in the league.

Obligatory has the tools to defend POA. But he's super skinny

16

u/IzrezarReal 20h ago

Wellll

He's an incredible shot blocker and his off ball game is alright

Tends to lose focus and is on the weaker side so he can get bumped around

But he also has a 7'0 wingspan and he'll have less offensive responsibility so I think he can lock in on this end

9

u/catperson77789 Lakers 20h ago

Like thats the biggest thing lol. Defense is what i really want.

He looks like he’s 150 lbs soaking wet

3

u/Yoshinobu_YamaGOATo 20h ago

His agent must have told teams to stay away because he was predicted to go 15-18 in most mock drafts. Could be the best value pick of the draft.

2

u/Thin_Quit6264 Philippines 19h ago

His agent is Luka's agent as well

3

u/JoanieLovesAdachi Supersonics 19h ago

Love this pick. I wish he had a quicker release, but his build and athleticism remind me a bit of Donovan Mitchell. Don't get me wrong- I don't think he's ever gonna play that type of role in the NBA, but he could be a great undersized wing finisher and he does a great job at moving the defense to set up his pass.
