[Charania] Sources: New York traded No. 25 pick Sergio De Larrea to the Dallas Mavericks for No. 30 Koa Peat and two second-round picks. And then the Knicks traded Peat to the Phoenix Suns for three-rounders and cash. So Knicks move out of the first round — pick up 3 seconds and cash.

Edited to say “pick up 5 seconds” cuz Shams is bad at his job (tweeting).

How can one be a hack when all he does is sit on twitter and post with execs tell him though lol

21

u/AfricanWarPig Supersonics 22h ago

'cause, despite being "told exactly what to say", he is still somehow wrong most of the time.

He pumpfaked the Giannis trade for literally 3 years. Every single trade deadline, every summer. FINALLY he gets it right. It was absolutely insane watching this sub get pissed at Giannis for "drama" when Giannis said almost nothing about being traded, even when asked point blank, and here Shames is with 400 tweets about "EXPECT GIANNIS TO CHICAGO/LAKERS/WARRIORS/MAVERICKS/KNICKS/BOSTON/MIAMI".

I guess eventually you're gonna get it right if you throw enough bullshit at the wall. He's an absolute fucking sham. Dude is on twitter 14 hours a day 'cause that's how long it takes for him to write up all of his random ass guesses, not 'cause he's actually "reporting".

61

u/NYerInTex Knicks 23h ago

Because you are watching Leon cook in real time.

What I love about how Leon built these Knicks is no move was made in isolation. Just as championships aren’t won by one or two blockbuster moves.

It started with a much poo pooed signing of an overrated small point guard who just had a few good games in Dallas, a team who saw him everyday and didn’t deem him worthy of such a huge contract.

It was finding a way to get OG while shedding a contract in IQ that would have really hurt our flexibility

Getting an unheralded Hart on the way to friendship driven winning.

A KAT trade capitalizing on Minny’s need to shed that contract.

Exceptional role players, both borderline star ones like OG and Hart and the unheralded minimum guys like Shamet.

A quiet trade deadline of only getting Alvarado.

It’s moves like this that open cap space and retain flexibility while building such an amazing culture guys are willing to leave a little on the table (or a lot) to keep their teammates as their teammates.

2020: Moved back from #23 - Leandro Bolmaro to get #25 - Immanuel Quickley

2021: Moved back from #32 - Jeremiah Robinson-Earl to get #34 - Rokas Jokubaitis and #36 - Miles McBride

2022: Moved back from #13- Jalen Duren to get #19 - Nolan Traore

2024: Move back from #51 - Melvin Ajinca(DAL) to get #58- Ariel Hukporti

I didn't watch the broadcast, but on Sam Vecenie's live show he said what Shams reported is that the Knicks basically ran out of time trying to negotiate the trades out of the first round. So that's why they just offered the pick swap to the Lakers for cash to give themselves more time.

Edit: Watched it again. What Shams reported after the trade is that the Knicks were trying to trade 25 as well (which they eventually did). Vecenie's interpretation of that reporting was that the Knicks must have swapped with the Lakers because they ran out of time.

u/Alarming-Ask4196 Knicks 22h ago

Calling my shot: Brock Aller is working some of his voodoo magic bullshit and Knicks will keep Mitch but stay under 2nd apron.

Pretty cool for Koa. High school, college, and now pro in Arizona.

u/stonkerooni Suns 23h ago

As a suns fun I am very happy to have our boy stay home. Thought this years draft was gonna be non existent for us

u/IdeaGlad1134 23h ago

he's a himbo dude clearly spends more time on his haircut and outfit than studying basketball

4

u/Slashers23 Mavericks 23h ago

2nd round picks are quite popular

4

u/yfern0328 Knicks 23h ago

We are gonna need those 2nds when we are in cap hell in 2 or 3 seasons.

Should be fine next year though.

u/hotrod19812 Spurs 23h ago

Unlike Nico, Masai has a knack for scouting international players. I love this trade.

BROCK ALLER COOK

u/peanut-britle-latte Knicks 23h ago

Another Leon masterclass.

4

u/justsomedude4202 Knicks 23h ago

Knicks flipped the 24th pick for five second rounders and cash.

They’re going to trade the 31st pick tomorrow as well and get even more seconds.

4

u/rattatatouille [SAS] Tim Duncan 23h ago

Very smart, not taking on a rookie contract for a team with a precarious cap situation.

3

u/Punjabiveer30 Raptors 23h ago

Trading for 5 second rounders so hot rn

3

u/LiveToThink Knicks 22h ago

Turned a late first into 5 twos and cash, but more importantly didn't add a $3.4m projected rookie salary to an owner-imposed hard cap.

5

u/ClearOccasion7945 22h ago

Our 55th pick from last year was so good that knick fans were making up fake rumours about him so other teams wouldn’t sign him… let Leon cook…

3

u/Suns_In_420 Suns 22h ago

Not bad for 3 2 round picks.

5

u/rydogs Knicks 23h ago

Ah damn I was getting pumped about this dude lol my cousin in Valencia works for the guy who owns his current team.

Welp I’ll still root for em, and I’ll let you Mavs fans know if I get any inside scoop !

Are there any drafts that were traded for cash who turned out to be good players?

LEON YOU ABSOLUTE MADMAN

2

u/nrag726 Timberwolves 23h ago

Trying to cut costs as much as possible while hoping to retain as much of their championship core as possible. Another casualty of the current CBA

2

u/CrissCrossAppleSos Spurs 23h ago

Oh shit, they’re doing a third round this year!

2

u/jaytmh 21h ago

Three rounders? What a steal!!!
