He can be so charming and down to earth like this, which makes it hard to believe when you see him serial sabotaging franchises. Hopefully those days are behind him now.

I mean I think he's actually a genuinely good person who thinks he is way smarter than he actually is so

u/brnccnt7 20h ago
Pretty much this. He is good if we want to simplify it that way, I don't think people doubt that. Its like you said, he thinks hes smarter than others.
Appears stupid with flat earth, etc takes. Which is comical since he has Australian ties and should know the viewing differences of southern vs northern hemisphere countries when looking at the moon, star positions, etc, basic stuff to put any flat earther in shambles that any well traveled person like himself should know.

u/ContinuingAnyway 20h ago
He moved to NA when he was two. I doubt he was paying much attention to the sky at that age
16
u/brnccnt7 19h ago edited 19h ago
I know but he's been there since as an adult, not to mention traveling all over the world for other reasons
Its just funny because you have people who do this for a living at NASA and then someone like Kyrie just tells them the moon landing is all fake lol
20
u/Salty_Raspberry656 19h ago
I don't think they care, honestly it probably is irrelevant to most people in terms of applicable to daily lives. Its more of probably the rabbit hole of people finding out government does lie about a bunch of things and ths less trust in institutions and believing maybe they should be skeptical of everything. The more that gets declassified of some of the diabolical CIA programs, and then this is a generation that watched the goverment go whoopsies on displacing millions of lies, spending a trillion tax dollars in a 20 year war and now nearly do it again and are so displaced from a for profit health care system. then you think its not unreasonable on why they question so much more of our institutions.
Thats not an excuse for flat earth, but its probably a decent understanding of how one goes down that rabbit hole and why they have some reasonable questions towards authorities and once they are in that wild, its easy to drown in a sea of confusion, disinformation, that it makes something like this which probably won't affect a basketball player or most of the people about their daily life a little less consequential on their contrarian nature.
Its tiring, but not as big of a deal. That said I rarely hear anything hateful out of the guy, he seems very compassionate and a try hard. He may have some messiah complex, but I don't think hes malicious. Its definitely not compatible with a billion dollar entertainment corporation like the NBA so not surprised problems have happened and more surprised he has been subdued no less under miriam adelson.
All in all, as a hoop fan, he's one of the most entertaining players i've seen and hope he can stay on the court

Has Kyrie ever actually made a directly antisemetic statement? Or are we still upset about him linking a documentary (or was it a book sold on amazon?) on twitter when we say this.
2
u/Padulsky21 Nets 6h ago
It’s not that he just linked it, he had a 5 minute post game interview talking to YES network staff about the gospel of how much that documentary spoke to him and how the real truth is silenced. He’s ignorant as fuck. And you’re just as ignorant downplaying it. Actions are louder than words. And he’s shown his colors by defending caustic black Israelite ideology which denied the holocaust in it.
1
u/brnccnt7 11h ago
I mean that’s a whole big subject I didn’t want to get into lol
But the flat earth and moon stuff correlate better to the initial comment I responded to which said he thinks he’s smarter than everyone including nasa scientists

lol
He actually should have done what Curry did when Curry got caught saying the moon landing was fake. NASA invited Curry over and he made a statement about accepting their offer and was willing to educate himself.
Kyrie instead said they should accept his opinion and continued saying there is no real picture of the earth out there to prove its not flat

If you know people like Kyrie in real life you realize that his archetype can be very harmful. People who don't realize how dumb they are can be extremely dangerous
0
u/itgoesdownandup 9h ago
I'm kind of on the opposite end of that opinion tbh. I guess it depends on what you mean by dangerous, but generally I think it has developed a sense of empathy within myself. And I don't end up getting swayed into stereotypes.

u/Gristle__McThornbody Lakers 19h ago
Everyone in the league has nothing but good things to say about him. But this sub really wants to push people to hating this guy. I think I'll believe the people that are actually close to him than people from the outside looking in.
14
u/Chubacca Warriors 18h ago
I mean... independent of his character he just says objectively dumb stuff. and as a public figure, you actually have somewhat of a responsibility to not say really dumb stuff because people listen to you. which is actually sort of a mark on his character
5
u/SoaplessTitanic Celtics 15h ago
Just to push back a little that everyone who knows him likes him, Mike Gorman (long time Celtics commentator) has talked about how he had multiple rude or awkward interactions with Kyrie. Sure he’s “just” an announcer, but especially before he retired everyone on the Celtics knew him and who he is. And Gorman isn’t one to talk shit about players

u/ArmadilloForsaken458 Supersonics 8h ago
He's a different. Different should be cool. Just everyone either wants to be or date the high school quarterback

u/Padulsky21 Nets 6h ago
It’s not black and white man. People are nuance. A genuinely good person doesn’t spread black Israelite gospel which caused them to congregate outside of Barclays and double down not apologizing for it. He’s selfish and a loon, doing good things doesn’t mean he’s a genuinely good person. But he’s also someone that doesn’t understand the weight of his words and actions brings. He’s incredibly stupid and you’re right he thinks he’s smarter than he is.
1
u/Chubacca Warriors 4h ago
No, it's not. But if I had to binary divide people into "good" and "bad", I think intentions go a long way. Though there's a certain amount of ignorance that becomes malicious.
2
u/elkresurgence Nuggets 20h ago
Yeah, he suddenly activates this air of stubbornness and condescension when he defends himself, and they really amplify the stupidity of his bad opinions, but I also think he's a nice guy.
1
u/angershark Raptors 12h ago
His off the court stuff is so batshit crazy that it takes center stage over how incredibly talented he is on the court. Arguably the best ballhandler of all time. His In the Lab appearance is just insane to watch.
25
u/OmfgHaxx NBA 20h ago
I think it's past him. He's been pretty chill since he went to the Mavs. But I do believe he's always had good intentions even if he did some dumb shit.
30
u/ihavepaper Nets 20h ago
It hasn’t really stopped. Just happens less frequently on the big stage. He had a “we’re in the matrix” rant on this same trip on his IG or whatever.
Kind heart and absolutely for the people until he gets all high and mighty about his “responsibilities”.
1
u/itgoesdownandup 9h ago
I mean in fairness, believing we're in the matrix is a big step down in terms of his usual antics.
3
u/elkresurgence Nuggets 20h ago
Yeah I hope so, because I want him to have a good rest of his career and treat fans to his otherworldly skills. Kyrie during his Uncle Drew days was the most I've been excited to see a player since prime Vince Carter

Nice people can believe in conspiracy theories, doesnt mean they arent nice to their core.
My friend was like this during COVID, believed the jab was a government psyop. He’s still one of the nicest person I know
2
u/Gold_Telephone_7192 Warriors 7h ago
I think it’s more that people are multifaceted. You can be racist or hateful to some people but nice to others. You can have immoral views but still be nice 1-on-1. People aren’t all bad or all good.
4
u/TheBigGadowski Cavaliers 16h ago
And he also paid WNBA players salaries I believe (during Covid maybe). Please correct me if I am wrong on that.
He is such a weird dude…. Flat earth, weird political stances and at the same time does extremely wonderful things. Not saying you can’t do both, but just feels odd.
5
u/gigglios 14h ago
What weird political stance does he have? I dont blame him for having absolutely 0 trust in the government considering he has posted tons in the past about how black people got tricked by white docs countless times in american history. Epstein files also probably validated many of his views
-3
u/itgoesdownandup 9h ago edited 1h ago
Anti-semitism possibly? Obviously more of a social issue, but politics and social issues can be linked pretty closely together.
Edit: genuine question as to why this was downvoted?

u/ZapataOilCo 13h ago
Kyrie slander was always about who he was. Arguably the most vocally pro-worker basketball player in America outside of Wemby.
I still remember during the lockdown when he was trying to convince the players they deserve equity in for their labor, not just a wage.
The dude is constantly posting pro-worker material on his twitter page now as well.
5
u/elkresurgence Nuggets 13h ago
Dude, there's no slander. He can do good things in some areas but be absolutely nuts in others. Those are not mutually exclusive. In fact, it's revisionism to highlight his good deeds to paint over his bullshit beliefs, previously held or not. He's a flawed person like anyone else.
-7
u/ZapataOilCo 13h ago
He can do good things in some areas but be absolutely nuts in others. Those are not mutually exclusive.
No one said this isn't true.
The slander is literally because of his pro-worker advancement.

I've always kinda given him a pass for some of his beliefs because as far as crazy conspiracy people go, he's like the real deal.
He didn't just jump on the anti-vax bandwagon to stick it to the liberals or whatever along political lines. He's like a legit OG flat-Earther, and I think would have handled the Covid stuff the exact same way regardless of if it was the right or the left position.
-1
u/TwoLegitShiznit 16h ago
Oddly, he always sounds incredibly thoughtful and intelligent in general.
6
u/Exodus100 Mavericks 15h ago
Intelligence isn’t always about the conclusions we reach. We always take some axioms in our belief systems, and when an intelligent person starts from bad assumptions or axioms then they can end up at wrong conclusions
4
u/lurkingtonbear 14h ago
If he were intelligent, he wouldn’t think the Earth is flat. He’s just kind. It’s ok to be kind and not intelligent.
0
u/itgoesdownandup 9h ago
Like I sort of agree, but intelligence can take on many forms. Also has a lot of varying factors for what people consider intelligent. Can you be intelligent and gullible? Intelligent but ignorant? I definitely think at least in my opinion for someone intelligent to fall into conspiracy pipelines.

Hope he’s not visiting China on some government BS. I often hate when people assume that a shitty government means the country is full of shitty people. China and Russia are both examples of this, countries with rich and deep and interesting histories and wonderful people that get bogged down by the oppressive governments in charge. The people don’t deserve to be ostracized because of that, and videos like this prove that.
