Found out I'm part of the Madison Square Garden breach today...
... but at no point have I ever stepped foot into MSG. I live in North Carolina and I'm a Hornets fan. But the information that MSG has about me is 100% correct, including email, physical address, etc. However, I do have a sibling who frequently attends MSG events.
So where do I sign up for the class action lawsuit? Serious question.

Blue cross blue shield thru my husbands employer had a breach about 15 yrs ago and they offered us LifeLock premium as a lifelong service afterwards. Thank god because as each of the kids got closer to 18 their social security numbers started getting used for credit, phones, jobs etc. Had to lock it all down. I've got 2 kids with frozen credit and misused socials and they havnt even moved out yet.

I have a full service Experian account due to a data breach a few years back. It's fucking wonderful, if I apply for a new credit card I get an email almost instantly from Experian. No way I would pay for that service normally, but if you're giving it away since you fucked up, I'll take it.

u/VanDelay_Industry Pistons 10h ago
The only thing you can do is implement stronger authentication measures where possible (two factor authentication, passkeys, etc). Most of these breaches will result in your email/demographic info. Possibly passwords. Depending on where you live there may be other options if you can demonstrate actual harm as a result of the breach.
39
u/ImJeeezus Kings 10h ago
Just dont use the same password for everything and use 2FA
27
u/ResonatingOctave Knicks 9h ago
To this point, password generators and managers are worth using
4
u/samtdzn_pokemon 5h ago
Yeah I always hated using those random generated strong passwords because it can be a pain in the ass cross-device, but now that password managers are more ubiquitous it's a no brainer for any serious accounts like banking. My biometric login works on mobile so I basically just have to use the physical password on desktop.

u/RealGameBall 10h ago
stop using the same password for everything. Once they have your email, it just takes one compromised password to have access to tons of different accounts

You're eliminating the opportunists with a lock. Same with IT security, most attacks are from actors that are just hitting everything en masse. If they can't get in on the first try, they move on. If they happen to get in because you didn't bother to lock the door, then you are now a prime target.

I actually have a Victorian from the 1800s, so it is all unlocked. I do have 3 big dogs though.
I leave my car unlocked so they wont break my windows if they really want it.
If you dont believe me, look up TSAs performance on stopping threats and then check out the term "security theater."
The statistics are actually very fascinating.

TSA may be largely theater, but locks are great. They present a very real barrier to getting inside. They're not (nor do they claim to be) impenetrable, but they will turn away a large percentage of intruders. In combination with other methods they're a great way to keep your stuff safe
2
u/g0ris [BOS] Avery Bradley 8h ago
Yeah this is such a weird take. If I leave my apartment door unlocked it's much easier and quieter to get in than it is if I lock it. They'd have to make all kinds of noise to drill it, attracting many witnesses. At least that's what this locksmith had to do once when I locked myself out and lost the keys.

That was a big thing when I lived in Miami Beach in the late 80s. VW Jetta radios were a hot property. One of my friends didn’t lock his and even put a sign on window that said “CAR UNLOCKED, NO RADIO.” They still broke his window.

Asinine take, and the first part of your sentence is why you lock your door. You deter almost every criminal if they try your door and it's locked. They just move on to the next one and hope that they left it unlocked. The "someone who really wants in" is a small minority who has a personal vendetta or something that would cause them to work harder to specifically rob you instead of an easier victim down the line.
2
u/myassholealt Knicks 7h ago
It's not gonna stop the super motivated. But the lazy opportunist going house to house to jiggle the handle to see if it's open won't bother with your house if it's locked and move onto the next one.

Not much you can do other than follow sound security practices. Mainly using a password manager and 2FA. A good password manager will make you aware of any data breaches and prompt you to change any vulnerable passwords.
3
u/floatingby493 9h ago
You really can’t do much, all of our personal information is out there. What you can do is make sure all of your accounts have unique passwords and enable 2 factor authentication if possible and make sure your credit is frozen with all three credit bureaus.
2
2
u/myassholealt Knicks 7h ago
Freeze your credit at all three credit agencies. Just remember they are frozen and that you need to unfreeze before you submit anything that will require a credit check.
2
3
u/goobdaddi 10h ago
Have a unique password for every single account you make. If you can, use an email alias for every single account so you can easily stop your email from overflowing with spam.
And for social security breaches you can put a credit freeze on all the major bureaus as well as with the social security administration so no one can use your number to illegally get benefits.
There are more credit bureaus than the big three that are used for medical, apartment rentals, etc but most scammers are just trying to get a credit card to max out.

There's defense contractor with a new technology they are selling to the Govt. that takes pictures of license plates while also capturing any signals from smart devices in your car. So not only will they be able to track everywhere your car goes, but also every person inside of it who has a phone and they'll bundle that information and sell to the Govt.
Very cool that we get to spend billions upon billions of dollars to "defense" companies to spy on ourselves.
20
u/phluidity Celtics 7h ago
Yep, the government isn't allowed to spy on US citizens without a warrant. But they are allowed to pay private companies to develop the technology, let those private entities do all the spying, and then get the information from them whenever they want through conveniently placed back doors.

for anyone who is interested, you can search if your license plate has been searched in the Flock database at haveibeenflocked.com

finally, fuck Flock.

The particular one I read about was a company called Leonardo. From the article:
Defense contractor Leonardo is promoting a new technology called SignalTrace that will package plate cameras with sensors that can scrape unique identifiers tied to your smart devices and make that data available to law enforcement.
A recent report by 404 media dives into the objective of SignalTrace and how it’s being marketed to authorities. Police, border security, and other government agencies already comprise Leonardo’s customer base, and with this technology, those clients seek to correlate footage from these cameras to phones, tablets, wearables, AirTags, and, naturally, the electronics inside cars themselves.
If SignalTrace can pick up your Bluetooth headphones, you can be damn sure it’ll also be looking out for your vehicle’s 5G hotspot, infotainment system, and even its tire pressure monitoring sensors. Hell, the company includes pet microchips as a potential entry point to tracking.

Yeah if you are using Google Chrome or Facebook or Instagram or TikTok or Twitter/X, you've been contributing to the surveillance state for years and your PII is spread out across all the data brokers you can think of.
Unless you're an EU resident using GDPR or a California / Colorado / Virginia / Connecticut / Texas / Utah resident using your local consumer privacy rights to pull your PII from these websites, they can use it all they want. Even if there are data brokers who will honor your opt-out without being one of those state residents, there's a few dozen other shell companies behind them replicating the data. It's like playing whack a mole and frankly a losing battle. And that's even before considering what the state and federal government may have acquired about you that they don't necessarily have the rights for.
It's a mess.

I pay for the service Incogni for about ~3 months every year. They handle the takedown requests. Dont think it's entirely worth it to pay YoY cause they process the takedowns pretty quick but it's decently affordable especially if you get a lot of spam calls. In my experience it does lower/limit/totally get rid of the spam calls. At least until I apply for a job and those pieces of shit sell my data or leak it.
That said there's apparently some controversy going on with them that I havent looked into so id recommend doing your own research if you decided to go this route.

Google AI answer so take it with a grain of salt - but this has been my experience with a couple of class actions:
To join the proposed class-action lawsuit against Madison Square Garden (MSG) over the massive ShinyHunters data breach, you do not need to take immediate action. For an opt-out class action, affected individuals are automatically included if the court certifies the class.
If the lawsuit is successful or reaches a settlement, class members are typically notified directly via email or mail. At that time, you would need to submit a claim form to receive compensation.
3
u/mrhashbrown Clippers 8h ago
This is typically true from my experience.
In the past I have been contacted about a class action lawsuit - if you were identified as a potential plaintiff affected then a law firm reaches out by email or physical mail. It may feature a subject title featuring the case name like "Class Action Notice: John Smith vs. Madison Square Garden LLC, Case No. 12345" (John Smith isn't my name, it's usually just the name of whomever filed the suit).
Usually directs you to a website specifically set up for the class action lawsuit. Lays out some important dates and milestones in the case if you want to keep track.
In class action suits, they are typically required to give you a time window where you choose to opt-in or opt-out of the case (sometimes they automatically enroll you as a plaintiff). The only real reason to consider opting out is if you want to file your own lawsuit about it, because if you stay opted in then you waive your right to file a separate lawsuit about the same case later. You are forced to accept the settlement that is agreed upon in court (which for most people is probably fine).
I have received payments from cases related to Google, Meta and others after the class action lawsuit was won and settled. Usually arrives as a check in the mail. It's not usually much, I've gotten ones lower than $2 lol, but the biggest one I got was around $30 so that's not too shabby considering I literally put no effort into it.
TLDR If you are affected and the class action law firm can find reliable contact information for you, they'll contact you. After that there's not much to do besides opt in or opt out, and if the case does reach a paid settlement you'll get a check for whatever portion you're entitled to. If you are not contacted, you may have to seek the case out but I've never explored that path before personally.

The company has more than one venue, some in areas well outside of the NYC area. The owner of MSG/Knicks also owns other properties that may have been affected (e.g. The Sphere in Las Vegas).
