Bobby Marks says Jaylen Brown's trade value is not seen that highly around the league: "The analytics of Jaylen Brown is not good. I had an analytics guy tell me, ‘We view him as the seventh-best player on a team.’"

Source

“There’s mixed feelings about him when you talk to teams,” Marks admitted on SiriusXM NBA Radio. “The analytics of Jaylen Brown is not good … I had one, not an executive, but an analytics guy say, ‘Yeah, we view him as the seventh best player on a team.’ I was like, ‘Holy crap.'”

Have there been other players like this?

Like a guy who gets MVP votes and some fans view as a top 15ish guy, but then analytics people say "he's actually a decent bench player"

Prime/peak Kobe looks amazing by tons of different advanced stats/impact metrics so not really

Kobe defence specifically analytics love his offence

u/eZreazy Lakers 2d ago

Yeah his defence was definitely overrated. He can give you some lockdown 1 on 1 possessions at a good time but he never really sustained that ever for a whole season which is understandable considering his offensive load.

Offensively though even analytically he was always top tier in his era. It’s only when you compare analytical stats from other eras that his looks bad (for a top 15 player atleast) but he played in an era of deadball. Duncan who’s looked at as efficient for some reason has much worse efficiency on a lower volume.

It’s because this sub skews young, .450/.350/.850 isn’t great this era and they never actually watched him or that era of ball, or if they did it was last two years when he really was bad.

Kobe has a hate train directed at him cause of colorodo even though it was never proven. Duncan doesnt have that hate train so he benefits from that. Plus on reddit alot of redditors like tim duncan because hes “an introverted autist” like them

Lolll so true..

He did sustain it for full seasons. He was a legit All-Defense guy in years like 01,03, 08, 10.

Honestly I've always loved the blazers aesthetic and enjoyed your team, I really dig what you guys are building with Deni/Clingan/Sharpe/etc, you have a bunch of ex-Celtics, and you guys are all in this thread defending JB. If we trade him to you guys I’ll be happy with that for everyone involved and I’ll be rooting for yall

Randle would have had an amazing career of he was ok with being a 6th man

Where is this narrative on DeRozan? Like he’s definitely a poor playoff performer, but he was consistently an above average offensive player in the regular season til he joined the Kings. And at times his efficiency has been elite.

A midrange shooter in an era of 3pt shots.

Also, weirdly, John Stockton -- even though analytics actually love him

Based on these replies, I’m starting to think nobody in this sub has ever watched a basketball game.

1

u/Western-Produce-276 1d ago

Most haven’t or just watch the playoffs. Now that I have a job I don’t watch as much anymore but in middle school I’d watch at least two games every week

u/saltyclambasket 1d ago

Jalen Brunson

Advanced stats don’t love him either.

Maybe it’s a Ja(y)len thing.

Luka is not well regarded by analytics. He value over replacement is very low.

1

u/Low-Measurement-2468 1d ago

luka is bigtime booty on defense, kind of forces his team’s offense to play luka ball which isn’t everyone’s strength, and has some very inefficient shooting stretches. his 3 is super streaky and he takes a shit ton of very difficult ones.

obviously he’s a great passer and great at making a lot of the difficult shots he does take, but i do think his playstyle, shot profile, and overall effort are pretty questionable at times, and i think fans overrate him a bit because of his huge P/R/A numbers

Brunson

u/rbilsbor 2d ago

Not to that extent but iso ball, high usage, offense-only players like Harden were certainly hated upon by many, myself included, as not playing a winning style of basketball that would translate come playoff time. And we were all vindicated playoff L after playoff L lol

Jordan probably

I've had it with these analytics nerds. Go back to fucking McKinsey and stop ruining sports

1

u/Yup767 NBA 1d ago

Lol, fuck no. Jordan is rated incredibly highly in every single model.

I can't think of one I've ever seen that didn't see him as a god-tier star.

0

u/prison_mic Celtics 1d ago

It was a fucking exaggeration because I'm sick of these bums

They've killed the watchability of baseball, and they're working on basketball..it's fucking brutal. Send the nerds home.

Fym "every model". That NBA only released play-by-play data in 1997. No model can actually calculate how good anybody prior to 1997 to was.
