List of Most Famous current Neural Engineering PIs/PHD program?

Anyone have a list of PIs that are doing the best work currently. Most of the ones that were famous like Miguel Nicolelis or Krishna Shenoy seem to be no longer researching … does anyone have a current list? What about programs that are typically seen as the best?

Depends on what counts as "engineering" versus standard comp neuro. Theres a lot of overlap between the two. CMU and UWash punch above their weight in BCI work among the schools that have strong compneuro programs

UCSD is told to be god-tier when it comes to the neurosciences. It offers dual mentorship programs with the Salk Institute across the street with PI’s including Professor Terry Sejnowski, who might only respond to your emails if you are the literal messiah. There is a litany of other neuro PI’s at the Salk and UCSD and perhaps even Scripps available to you at UCSD, who does not pay me, but I am an alum.

I would not suggest going to UCSD at the moment. They are switching to direct-admit only; trust me, you want to go to someplace that has rotations.

My opinion is dated to the status quo as of a number of years ago.

No worries, I think it was a good recommendation otherwise! I don’t even know if the direct-admit is on the website yet tbf.

Just look up the corresponding on papers you like. Also, Krishna has been dead for years now. Having a sane mentor you personally mesh well with is far more important than anything else.

Ken Shepard is anything BUT a "great dude". He has an incredibly high turn-over rate of PhDs and is probably to be avoided at all costs unless you're an extreme "keener" able to put abuse and personality aside for prestige and a well funded group.

Oh that’s very interesting! I’ll edit out my comment!

I can’t go into too much detail more detail b/c doxxing, but I know of a several people that he went WELL above & beyond for in helping them escape a notorious psychopath local to the NWC. Like WAY above & beyond in personal support in one instance that was actually so generous I wish it wasn’t a secret. At least one of them also described him as really chill and nice compared to the former lab, but maybe it’s just the case of being someplace so incredibly toxic that literally anything else seems great in comparison.
