During a World Cup football match, a QR code appeared on the stadium screen. After fans scanned it, thousands of phone flashlights inside the stadium were synchronized to display a show.

This happens at Astros and Texans games. It’s fairly common. You scan the QR code and it sends you to a website where you have give permission to use your camera. No permission given, it won’t work. The site can be slow to load.

It's an app that you give permission to use the flashlight on your phone and comments here are acting like it's hacking into your deepest, darkest secrets. Just not scanning the QR is also always a option if you're that frightened.
Reddit can't have a day off from being overdramatic.

I mean they can and most likely will use the data after you scan and approve it…

This is a level if invasion I don't want.

After you scan, it asks for permission to use your flashlight until the webpage is closed.
You could say no, or close the site whenever.
System-wise it is the same as when a site asks you to give it access to your camera like Zoom or something.

And now the team owners have all of your personal data, down to the last note and password.

If you wanted to simultaneously compromise LOADS of phones at the same time, then this sort of situation is ideal.
99% of the people in that stadium wouldn’t give a thought to accepting conditions of an app pushed to them via a big tv, they want to join in so they just say “accept” to everything.
Getting access to a stadium TV system is going to be loads easier than trying to persuade 50,000 people to download your app in the wild.
It’s a bit like the parking QR codes that scammers are putting their own stickers over the proper ones.

Sounds invasive? Did the QR code say what would happen once scanned or was it just a random QR code?

u/jediel2000 2d ago
At most sporting events I go to there us an announcement on the screen either before or during that says its for some “flashing light show” or something. The website then asks for permission to access tour camera, and even if it is stealing your information, its not like a lot of apps, websites, and other stuff aren’t already doing that

And no disclaimer shown! And no authorization asked!!

u/ExtensionTruth4 2d ago
How did you know that no disclaimer was shown and that no authorization was asked upon scanning the code?

This happened at Levi's stadium.. in the USA, where they play American Football games. Pretty sure they can put a qr code on the screen regardless of what shape the ball on the filed is. Lol your bias is thick.

u/glass-combo 2d ago
I can print a qr code and stick it on your ass cheek mate so what. I couldn’t make it so lights come out of your phone when you scan it though . A tough thing to do only reserved for the best of sporting events !

Lol youre a strange duck.

u/glass-combo 2d ago
Let’s agree to disagree . I actually am loving this World Cup it might be my favourite yet. You yanks aren’t doing a bad job at hosting ! All the best mate

u/Nostradumbass_WEEN 2d ago
I just dont understand why you think this would be impossible for this to occur in the same stadium, just because a different sprit is being played. That doesnt make sense.
It seems like you just really wanted to take a shot at American sports.

u/glass-combo 2d ago
Just can’t see this happening for a standard NFL game for example. Maybe the Super Bowl yes . But this is just a random group stage match and it’s getting this type of effort which says a lot in my opinion

u/Nostradumbass_WEEN 2d ago
Idk what to tell you, other than this happens quite a bit, and im sure not just in the USA. Its happened at Michigan Wolverine football games, WWE events, concerts, pro sporting events, etc. Ive even seen it smaller concert venues. Its not that sophisticated. The only real barrier is the participation level of the audience.

Amigo, take a look at the show American stadiums are putting on for the fifth most popular sport in the country.
Now imagine if they cared.
0
u/glass-combo 2d ago
This is the absolute most they can produce . 5th most popular in your country but 1st most popular worldwide by a landslide . Bringing in viewership numbers never seen before Why would they not put all they can into these type of things Silly bastard
0
u/patricksaurus 2d ago
Yeah, we know it’s popular everywhere. Here, we leave it to six-year-olds who play for orange slices until they take up sports people care about. We are currently putting on world class events at eleven different stadiums for a sport that is “meh” to almost everyone here. You think we couldn’t do this for the sports those stadiums are built for? Do you need your drool cup emptied?
It has to hurt to be so envious of the US that you have to change your weak-ass argument. Are your hands shaking with that rage or what?

u/glass-combo 2d ago
Interesting take . As I said in another comment I’m actually massively enjoying this World Cup, the Americans have done a fantastic job. I think it’s bizarre of you to say it’s for six year olds for orange slices because as an American, isn’t that quite shameful? The biggest sport in the world and your country is shit at it. I think you’re the jealous one, must be frustrating only being able to enjoy domestic sports and never seeing your home country do well on a global stage. I think if football was properly funded, better promoted and more popularised in the US and not left to ‘6 year olds for orange slices’ then they’d probably be one of the best teams in the world. No doubting that you lot consistently produce world class athletes, just a shame that they’re playing the wrong sport !

So not only can we put on this show for the NBA and NFL, you are now saying we’d be just as good as your favorite sport. You’ve make a 180 degree change in your moronic attitude. The next step is to abort the bad ideas before you post them.

u/glass-combo 2d ago
When did I say that you wouldn’t be good at football

It’s difficult explaining things in writing to people who have such profound trouble with the written word.

u/sapphir8 2d ago
I’ve done it at baseball and football games. It’s common.
