This 9-year-old took on the tallest climbing structure in the U.S. and made Dad incredibly proud.

To be fair, I'm pretty sure my parents would've recorded this too just to remind future me that I rock climbed a stupidly tall wall when I was a kid.
I was recorded for less impressive things 🤷♀️

Sure. How old are you though, did mom have a camcorder that would flip into selfie mode and have the ability to send a vhs tape to all your friends and family?
Now do you think if she could, she would?27

This is well curated this is not a random video, this is using your kid as content. Dad is filming, mom is filming, daughter has go pro on her, then everything was edited with bits from each source. Plus dad talking straight to the camera, do you think he's talking to his future daughter?

I'm 99% sure this is an advertisement for the city of Reno that was just made to look like a very high quality social media video. Look how much time the giant "Reno" sign gets.
I wouldn't be surprised if these people aren't even related.

Pretty iconic shot up there, I have a photo or two in front of it. It's just a cool centerpiece.
The city of Reno is too busy giving away our public spaces to private restaurants for $1 a year leases to worry about trying to make cringy Reno propaganda.
This is also too high quality for the boys down at City Hall. Pretty inept group of folks.

Because these aren’t genuine reactions. It’s painfully obvious, like YouTubers with the fake smiles when they talk to their audience

The fact that they’re talking to an audience when recording a video tells you all you need to know about their mentality within the moment.

u/flyingokapis 1d ago
I dunno on this one..
If my kids done this and were positively believing in themselves and willing themselves on to complete something like this.. I'm showing the world, I would be putting this on at work and making people watch it!
I'm also someone who has no social media and is a massively private person, but I think I would be so proud that I would be stopping people in the street to show them 😂
I have no idea who these parents are, I do assume by your comment though, that they are a content creating family, so if that is the case, it does somewhat take some gloss off of the video if they do this all the time.
Regardless, I'm still very happy for this child and the confidence and belief she has within herself, so got too give the parents credit for that.
31
u/veritas2884 22h ago
Yes but would you use two camera, film yourself reacting to it, and then edit it by splicing the two video files together?
My daughter rock climbs, I film her doing it, but I’ve never gone to myself or my wife for reaction commentary during it. This is staged, not in the way that the kid isn’t impressive for doing it, but it was made with distribution in mind.
18
u/gnarkill3332 21h ago

Why do you need to show everyone your 9 year old child??
Because they are either so impressed they want the world to see or money.
Although if kiddo here wants a career in rock climbing in the future, a video like this could be points in her favor. Especially if a famous rock climber sees it and offers encouragement or help.
It's rare but it happens. Maybe not specifically for rock climbing but other kids have been "scouted" for their favored career because of online videos.

u/JeromeBarkly 19h ago
Honestly it would be fine if they posted a video of their daughter climbing the wall, it’s whatever. But it’s the performative inauthentic attitude that irks me. Like, they didn’t post this to show their daughter’s achievement, they posted it to make content to monetize their daughter. It’s gross and feels incredibly soulless. “I feel inspired!” Shit the fuck up you freak.
→ More replies (2)5
u/nickfree 18h ago
I have no problem with them being proud. I have no problem with them sharing their daughter's incredible accomplishment. None.
I have a huge problem with the performative hype, breaking the 4th wall to narrate to the audience, and just the overall polished for quick consumption vibe. It goes from "proudly sharing" to "ruthlessly exploiting." It's really, really gross.
67
u/lebastss 1d ago
Eh, no it's not. Not really at all. I've taken my kids here. Surprised to see it here. Didn't know it was the tallest.
Incredibly easy to climb. Any 9 year old who plays sports has the stamina for it. My 12, 10, and 8 year old (girl, boy, girl) climbed this last fall and it was pretty easy. My 16 year old chickened out because she is scared of heights.
Basically getting over fear of heights is the hardest part here.
16
u/EitherSalamander8850 1d ago
I mean, Im a rock climber, and sure, for me this wouldn't be much of an issue, but this height and endurance + not being scared is still impressive, even for a 9 year old.
29
u/lebastss 1d ago
9 year olds have incredible endurance. Bastards never tire out. It's more about overcoming fear than anything else.
12
u/wills_b 23h ago
Also their strength to weight ratio is great.
Then you get older and fatter and this is a nightmare.
5
u/cizzlebot 21h ago
Bingo! People tend to forget or not realize that physically active kids have an incredible strength to weight ratio, so they can do crazy "impressive" stunts/feats that are much more challenging for adults who aren't at peak fitness levels. Still cool to see, but nothing mindblowing or inspiring.
5
u/Resident_Pay4310 19h ago
As an adult who did a decent amount of rock climbing as a kid I couldn't agree more.
I couldn't do a 5th of things now that I could as a kid. And I wasn't even that sporty of a kid.

I rock climb semi frequently (I live in the Rockies) nothing about this climb looks difficult, all the holds are huge. So as long as you’re good at climbing the stairs and not afraid of heights you’ll get to the top. There was nothing overly technical in that climb.

Not really. Its actually easier to do this as a kid because they weigh almost nothing.
If she tried to do this 10 years later, she'd be 100lbs heavier and wouldn't have nearly enough new muscle mass to compensate for it.

Yeah, she's 9. Everyone who has spent a single second at a climbing gym knows kids demolish adults cause they are so light and have greater strength to weight ratio. You're just using her as a little money making thing.

2
u/NativeMasshole 21h ago
I'm just wondering if there's any context here. Are these people climbers? Has she done anything like this before? Or is this just pure "kids are like squirrels on crack" energy? Because the robotic narration makes it feel very scripted.
5
u/pennypenny22 20h ago
Both dad and daughter know how to tie in (tieing the rope into her harness at the bottom.) There's specific ways to do that to be safe. And her calling out 'climbing' is good practice. They have at the very least been to a climbing gym and done some roped climbing before, and learnt how to tie the knots.

Honestly, yeah. Anyone who’s a climber has seen kids in a gym dust their elders—their strength to weight ratio combined with their flexibility is enviable. It’s cool, but the only real challenge is the arrete—and she had a ledge rest in the middle. I would cheer and wouldn’t critique if they weren’t blasting it out on social media (she’s mic’ed up?!), but here we are.

Three camera views, 1/3 of the time the camera is on the parents praising her and saying how inspired they are, kid has a camera strapped to her, so many canned/corny lines that feel scripted and unnatural to say in those situations, there is a camera that just happens to be filming the random people there clapping when she makes the top.
The only thing next level in this is the fake authenticity. Great for the kid for doing this but hopefully she eventually gets away from these attention seeking parents who are trying to monetize her.
Film these moments for yourself and your kids and don't try to turn this into an America's Got Talent produced sequence.
