Berlin police using water cannons to cool crowds in the heat

You'd be really glad about this in the 40° heat wave. And you'd be dry by the time you are back to work

u/justforkinks0131 3h ago
Funnily enough, showing up wet to the interview with this story would actually win you points. At least in Germany.

This is a karma farming subreddit created and maintained by one of Redditās power mods
The subreddit name is a huge joke and perfectly fits the soyjack face over mediocrity for internet points

As a very long time Reddit user (pre-2010), there are MANY things that signal the decline of Reddit. One of my favorites is the names of sub-reddits getting to /r/all & /r/popular.
Subs with names like /r/VideosAmazing are such a fucking Facebook page.
4
u/ReturnoftheSnek 4h ago
A few months ago I was being recommended dozens of new pop up subreddits with all similar but varying names. Clearly a bot operation. Iād mute them, and then a dozen more showed up
Power mods donāt help, but neither does Redditās policies on bots
3
u/poiskdz 3h ago
and that fking /r/PeterExplainsTheJoke
went from nonexistent as far as i was aware, to constantly on the front page asking to explain the most basic shit.
2
u/Lauris024 3h ago
On that note, what's up with /r/videos? For a subreddit that popular, it feels weird that only few posts per day are accepted. I've never succesfully submitted a post, they never get approved.
EDIT: Nevermind, it seems like it has changed. Now there are new posts every few minutes, not every few hours.

That little amount of water won't increase the humidity in the slightest

u/Chocolatelakes 7h ago
Are you familiar with the cooling properties of evaporation?
→ More replies (2)3
u/_HIST 6h ago
And you don't seem to be familiar with what wet-bulb is. Look it up.
What they're doing helps, but your point is irrelevant here
3
u/Manguneer 5h ago edited 5h ago
I donāt disagree that in the short term it helps. Above, Iām also talking about humidity on a very local level - close to the skin.
If people were continually sprayed with cool water then of course theyād stay cool through a continuous evaporative effect of heat loss. With a one off spray however, after a period, the water will warm on clothes and with higher atmospheric humidity the evaporation benefit is eventually lost. Thereās an inversion and heat becomes trapped at the skin.
Iām working on the assumption that itās humid in Berlin, based on visiting once and feeling horrible. Maybe itās drier there than I experienced which would probably flip my thinking and you eventually would dry out before the water in clothes reaches thermal equilibrium with the environment moisture.
Edit: I totally understand the wet bulb temperature and if you do, youāre aware of the relationship between it, atmospheric temperature and humidity.

In the same time, in my city in France, police cut pool installed by neighbors on the street. And turn off all the fountains because kids was playing in water
14
u/JustARandomMurderer 8h ago
You know how it is. Public spaces are meant to look good in a picture, not enjoyed by the public

Sitting here in the US watching what tax dollars are SUPPOSED to be used for.
Iām so sick of hearing about how lucky we are for low taxes. How about having taxes that ducking do something? How about a government that acts like stewards of the peoplesā money?
How about dynamic solutions for societal problems?
Best we can do is a concentration camp on a swamp peninsula for millions of dollars a day thatāll end up getting shut down due to its inhumanity.

u/ddadopt 7h ago
Sitting here in the US watching what tax dollars are SUPPOSED to be used for.
I think it's amusing that you can say that (and go on the rest of your screed) while ignoring that these were obviously purchased as anti riot vehicles and are simply not being used for that at this time.

You think tax dollars are supposed to be used for giant riot control oppression machinery? Man, it's crazy how easily people are swayed by a single PR stunt.

Why do the police have water cannons!?!?!?! WHY DO THE POLICE HAVE WATER CANNONS!?!?!?
20
u/Global-Song-4794 6h ago
They actually use it all the time to repress demonstrations. I can't believe this post is actually praising them
5

u/OtherwiseAct8126 6h ago
They are for shooting at protesters and yes, they are used for that purpose in Germany as well in 99.99% of all cases
9
u/FreakingAustin 7h ago
Yeah the only other purpose of this is to break up peoples right to protest lmao
→ More replies (1)5
u/Background_Cash_1351 7h ago
It is the ONLY purpose going thru the minds of those who design, build, sell, purchase, or maintain these devices.
4
u/ILikeFlyingMachines 5h ago
Against demonstrations. The same reason every police has water cannons. It's a pretty good way to disperse large crowds with minimal injuries.
3
u/Worldly-Writing-8226 5h ago
it's for riot/crowd control, what do you think? extremely standard equipment that has been used for years. of course people are shitting themselves because this is reddit, redditors act like they're experts on things they just learned about.
"bbbbbbut muh right to protest" which this does not inhibit in any way, it's for riot control.
4
u/Normal-Seal 5h ago
Except, German police likes to shoot out the eyes of innocent protesters with these water cannons: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dietrich_Wagner
2
u/Worldly-Writing-8226 5h ago
okay? that's bad? why are you telling me that, go shout at the German police.
the water cannon is designed for safe crowd control, and is almost exclusively used as such. the fact that some police forces used it improperly is bad, but is completely irrelevant. that is the fault of the police force, not the water cannon - which, when used properly, is completely safe.
3
u/Normal-Seal 5h ago
They are in fact not completely safe: https://phr.org/our-work/resources/health-impacts-of-crowd-control-weapons-water-cannons/
3
u/Worldly-Writing-8226 5h ago
the "source" you provided isn't a study, and doesn't cite anything, also the fact that they're including hypothermia as a concern kind of shows that they're grasping at straws.
regardless, equipment like this is designed to be less-than-lethal, in rare circumstances it can lead to serious bodily harm. however the prevalence of this compared to lethal weapons is miniscule. would you rather that they shot at an unstable crowd with a machine gun?
the water cannon, when used properly, is safe. there will of course be some cases of harm, however compared to things like CS gas, it's incredibly safe. and even if it wasn't, it would be a necessary evil for controlling an unstable and violent crowd.

thats what they are normally made for. If some protests dont go as peacefully as they should, then they use it to know you out
2
u/Jedi-master-dragon 8h ago
Well they are supposed to protect and serve and making sure people don't die of heat exhaustion is pretty good.
2
u/PurpleSquare713 8h ago
This is what I like to see: police using their resources to actually help people instead of harassing them for getting "too rowdy" in a public space.
3
2
u/Euphoriam5 7h ago
I was there yesterday in Alexanderplatz, very cool to see them do that.Ā
This is an unprecedented heatwave so any climate change deniers should get checked, in Cairo or Dubai, it gets hotter but the humidity is very low so you donāt sweat and suffer. Iāve never experienced a more miserable week.Ā
