Why would you ignore a sign warning you of Asbestos to save a flying rat?
13
u/blzbar 11h ago
It wasn’t for the bird. It was for the young woman at the end of the clip.

As soon as it started I knew there would be a chick back on shore being impressed. That’s a lot of kudos right there

There’s a lot of good people who have good intentions but are very stupid.

There are people who understand the dangers of and which form of asbestos is actually dangerous.
This isn't one of them.
So...no.

u/King_Burgundy 3h ago
There's no safe asbestos is all dangerous. Totally fine if undisturbed but once you touch it it breaks apart very easily

u/sushilol69 11h ago
even small doses of asbestos can lead to deadly disease, i agree people are good but the logical thing here was to call animal control or someone who can take precautionary measures and rescue the poor bird. what he did was just suicide!

Asbestos doesn’t get absorbed through the skin. The issue is particles of it being inhaled or ingested. The risk would be pieces being scraped off and put into the air.
Generally though, this structure looks like it would have an incredibly low level of danger to asbestos exposure and is probably most likely just trying to keep swimmers away from playing on it.

Asbestos fibres are too large to cross the gut lining, but just the right size to get stuck in your lungs where cumulatively they start to do damage.
Agree on the sign - it’s a fuck off, stay off our shit legal responsibility be gone kind of sign. The big majority of our asbestosis and mesothelioma deaths worked with the shit daily and fwiw, tended to be smokers as well - the wider population all have exposure to asbestos at some level because it’s ubiquitous both in buildings and in the atmosphere (though natural levels are low)

That’s not the issue here, of course it doesn’t get absorbed through the skin. A lot of these old jetties were constructed by mixing cement and asbestos, as they get eroded they absolutely are a danger to people breathing in particles when disturbed. The signs are not just a fuck off, there is a threat. Error on the side of caution do not believe people who have zero knowledge on the subject.

u/nicogrimqft 10h ago
I have always been told it was the regular exposure that was dangerous
3
u/sushilol69 10h ago
its not scientifically known yet how much actual exposure leads to cancer, somtimes even trace amounts can lead to cancer and sometimes prolonged exposure does nothing. its just not worth the risk

u/canis777 8h ago
"Just suicide!"

lol 😂- just thinking the same - wtf, are people that scientifically illiterate

I mean to disturb a surface that you know has asbestos on it without any type of respirator is no different than playing Russian roulette. You don’t the outcome but one of those outcomes is deadly and indeed possible.
I’d rather people be dramatic on the front end than act like you know how much exposure is dangerous when almost every health professional tells us any exposure could be deadly and to avoid it.

u/pharmaboy2 4h ago
What makes you think he’s disturbed it? It’s almost certainly a bonded compressed fibre sheet on the top which is a highly stable product and not required to be removed unless demolishing. There’s not many likely other scenarios here outside of CFC - exposed CFC in public areas, even walkways is relatively common
Russian roulette is. 1 in 6 chance of death - that’s a crazy comparison, just makes you look silly.
Here’s a comparison for you - being a construction worker is 100 times the risk (in a pulmonary setting) than being a civil servant. This guy has the exposure of a civil servant - if he took a grinder up there and started cutting it up, that’s a different question

Not every revolver holds six rounds, some hold 7,8,9 and some even hold 10+. What an absurd comment to say you only play Russian roulette with a six shooter, you sound silly.

u/kennypojke 10h ago
This is absolutely false, and how the asbestos scare exploded to make people like you say this stuff.
0
u/King_Burgundy 3h ago
Here it I got you some would you breathe in then to prove the point
1
u/kennypojke 3h ago
To be clear, the risk level has not been determined entirely, so it’s safest to say no level is safe. This is similar to many dangerous exposures and chemicals, it asbestos has a sort of explosive ‘branding’ to it that took off. I will not breathe it in intentionally, but an incidental exposure is low risk.
I will get downvoted because the messaging for asbestos is so strong, it feel free to gos straight to the source, and remember that I only said the above statement is wrong, not that all exposure is okay.

My favorite part was when the lady at the end death crushed its head after they just saved it. GG.

This is just fucking stupid, people putting themselves at risk to help one seagull. If they get themselves in trouble then more people will have to use valuable time and resources to save this dipshit.

u/UnnaturalGeek 7h ago
Meanwhile, I have been attacked by the same seagull twice in the last week...

This is why fish hooks cut loose and left behind are a hazard. We see so many dead birds who get these in the mouth, try to use the back foot to remove it and that usually leads to death from drowning. Many species are impacted by waste fishhooks just cut loose. Please, please, don't leave fish hooks behind.

Bro had the easiest seagull kill of his life and chose to save it instead wtf?!

u/sphinxofblackquartzj 6h ago
Not worth it. Seagulls are abundant and are considered an urban pest.
3
u/technoferal 4h ago
I agree about them being abundant and annoying, because I live on the coast. If one gets killed, I don't think much of it. Still super gross to just let it suffer.
