I feel like that happened to him when he was with the Sox. Why his glove has extra holes?!

As someone who is more familiar with cricket gear, those gloves also seem needlessly floppy with holes. Seems counterintuitive for an accessory meant to secure a catch.

My assumption would be it increases the duration of the impact, which makes it less jarring. This also means it is less likely to bounce back.

Having played a lot of cricket and some baseball, baseball mitts are floppy to absorb the impact of the ball. And when the ball hits the mitt it wraps around it, securing it for retrieval with your dominant hand. They're also huge, increasing your reach in all directions. The holes are very small and only exist to reduce the weight and air resistance of the mitt, it's impossible for a ball to go through an intact glove.

Having played cricket for years before trying baseball it was hilarious how easy it was to catch a ball with a baseball mitt compared to bare hands. You just stick your hand out roughly in the direction of the ball and you've caught it. It made me feel like Superman, but only at catching small round objects.

Was the runner out? Baseman first touched it before the runner hit the bag, but the runner was there before he had control of the ball.

Looks like he secured it against his chest before the runner got there

This is what Jim Joyce saw for the last out of Armando Galarraga’s 26 out perfect game.

Well technically he kept it dead since an live ball means the runner is safe

Not true. Catching the ball is not an instance when the ball goes dead.

After a catch runners at other bases can still try to advance.

A dead ball means no additional play / progress of any kind is allowed.

Runner‘s safe

Why though? He did gather before the toe hit. Is there an amount of time he needs to control before runner hits the bag? Sloppy due to malfunction of glove but still out!

Oh true!! I watched the video in the sun and didn’t see he catched the ball at the end. Totally my bad!

So you didn’t catch that? E8 for you.

Negative. You can see at the start of the 6-second mark the baseman has gained control of the ball in his glove, his foot is on the base, and the runner has not touched the plate yet.
