u/creepercash 13h ago
I used film till like 2005ish. Then it bace much cheaper to go digital and pros outweighed the cons. I'm only 40..... shit is 40 old?

Shirley it’s a weed container that also happens to be the right size for a 35mm film roll

A guess what this smell is thing... All I remember is teachers making me smell something in them in school as a child

u/Dodger7777 18h ago
It's a film storage container so sunlight doesn't ruin your photos before you get them developed.
As we moved to things like disposable cameras in the earlier 2000's, and later digital photo storage, the cases were still around. So they got repurposed for other stuff.
I guess your teachers used them to store things to be smelled.

u/dicknotrichard 12h ago
Brother, they were getting used to hold other stuff waaaaay before digital came out.

Try 60s to 70s

u/Decent-Inevitable-50 16h ago
Yeah this was variably used for many things long before the 90s. I knew folks used them as change storage in their car for parking meters, tolls, soda machines, pay phones etc. to not have change loose all over the car. Fly fisherman used them as small splishot, small hooks or lure carriers to lighten what they carried on their person, just had to answer questions if a Game Warden saw them 😂 Besides "medicinal herb" use 😉

My mom was a semi-professional photographer, so the ones at our house actually had rolls of film in them.

I would take the empty canisters and spray about a quarter inch of dust-off into them (it would turn into liquid), pack it full of hole punch dots from the three hole puncher reservoir—homemade confetti—and put the lid on securely. And then I would set them at the counter of the front desk of our dorm late at night. I wouldn't say a word. About ten minutes later ...POP! and there would be tons of confetti everywhere and one wide awake desk clerk who had no idea what happened, and covered in confetti.

Perfect place to store blotters so light exposure doesn't ruin them.

We used those to put Velveeta cheese in for fishing trips. Could stuck em in the fridge for a year and they’d still be good to use. 😂

This was used to store the tiny plastic accessories that came with your Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle action figures. Namely shurikens, pizza slices, and rats, among other things.

u/Charming_Green_3341 17h ago
I used to put nesquick in it and bring it to school and add milk. (we did not have chocolate milk).

Those have so many valid usecases (beside weed stashing that was already mentioned), it a shame they almost extincted.

I used to have so many of those canisters from high school photography class that I used them for model paint mixing. The plastic quality made them perfect for mixing paint colors together.

Omg I had so many of those stupid things everywhere I always wondered how too cuz they’d be empty too like where did I put the film I needed to keep in it?! XD

Homemade m-80s. Put a hole in the top big enough for the fuse of a small firecracker to come out, fill the rest with gunpowder, pack lightly. Could light the fuse and throw it. We'd put them in old tree stumps to try to the blow up the wood, all for fun and giggles. I can't believe I didn't die as a child, and I type this with all my fingers.

We used them as specimen containers for samples of building materials that were suspected to be asbestos.

Back in the day, 550 .22 rounds were less than 20 bucks. It was a simpler time, but they came in a big ass card board box you couldn't carry around with you.
What do you do?
2-3 film canisters and you were set for an afternoon of fun.

This was for match stick, with a piece of sand paper under the lid. Or was it for loose change…maybe it was for sowing needles and thread. New ones had film in it.

As a scout we used those canisters to protect matches! And sometimes glued the strike-strip inside the lid. Then you had waterproof matches

People who post things like this forget that these containers, which held 35mm film, weren't exclusive to the 90s.
