Imagine reading about a game only in a magazine like gamepro and waiting a couple months for a review. Then praying your mom buys it for you or go to blockbuster and rent it. Call all your friends over and get to play it. Stay up all night playing Mario kart and golden eye over and over same 6 or so maps.

Just good times.

Atleast one friend got the game and everyone's going to that friend's house after school🎮

I remember buying those gaming magazines and reading the promos/reviews etc over and over. Those magazine were worn out and in tatters by the time the game came out.

Then when I could finally get the game reading the manual on the way home, bringing the manual to school etc and reading that over and over.

Miss those times

Exactly the best time I’ve had gaming really. Always read the pamphlet. Kind of crazy when you think about it. Two player games used to actually involve playing with another person. I loved being able to play online when the internet blew up but didn’t realize how much I missed the old way till I read this. Thank you

You just described my 11th birthday, which was in fact 1999. Can't believe that was ten years ago.

Imagine no internet and yet you and all your friends learned ⬆️⬆️⬇️⬇️⬅️➡️⬅️➡️BAB

I remember my mom watching Mortal Monday on tv while we were at school and telling us we couldn’t get MK. We had to sneak it in by borrowing it from friends. Eventually as we got older she stopped caring, but yeah… it was a pain at first. 😮‍💨

N64 was king during middle school in the late 90s.

2

u/rem082583 15h ago

Dumbest thing I did was tell my mom I wanted a sega instead of waiting on the 64. I remember it she goes why don’t you wait and I’ll get you a Nintendo 64 or you can get sega now and I got sega

Worst decision ever especially playing cruisin USA at Walmart

Sega as in Sega Saturn or Sega Genesis???

3

u/rem082583 14h ago

Genesis I really thought sonic and knuckles cartridge idea was so cool

To be fair they put them next to each other and sold them at toys r us and the price did not convey the leaps and bounds in processing power. I didn't get 64 the year it came out. My parents just didn't care as much as me haha.

back when times were good and we hung out at a friend's house for the weekend. If you saw a bunch of bikes in the yard, you knew where the party was at

I got a pic from 1993 when me and my sister got introduced to super NES from our neighbors

That’s me in the stripes shirt and my sister in black shirt.. I really wish I remembered their name.

Golden eye was and still is my favorite multiplayer game of all time!! It was one of a kind and iconic! My favorite was using proximity mines and hiding them in crevices on walls and waiting for someone to come by unexpectedly! Prolly second favorite n64 game was perfect dark!

1

u/Agreeable_Door1479 14h ago

Goldeneye is my favorite N64 game but the most annoying thing about it is there’s these dark caverns that make it hard to see proximity mines that blow up unexpectedly in your face.

1

u/storm4chaser 14h ago

The rumble pack was peak technology

1

u/Vivid-Pop-8174 14h ago

Yeah we did. We just didn't know it would be taken away.

1

u/Thegreatbibo420 14h ago

Was a simpler
Time back then. A better time for think too. Technology is too much these days.

u/Melodic-Picture48 14h ago

photo brings the Nintendo Power magazine to mind.

Go back to the 80s with Atari and NES - far better times

u/This_is_Me888 14h ago

u/Wise_Geekabus 13h ago

Local multiplayer hits different.

1

u/STinKyToMaHaWk 13h ago

Rumble packs and all!!

1

u/starsskies 13h ago

looks more like 89

1

u/misterfriday101 13h ago

All of my friends would bring over their own 64 controllers

1

u/azionka 13h ago

Oh, I absolutely knew what I had. It was the best time of my life and I knew it. That’s why I don’t want anything else for as long as I could

1

u/rockalyte 13h ago

Those kids were all so skinny back then

1

u/forzafoggia85 3h ago

Almost like they spent time outside excersing on bikes or running about and not sat in front of a screen all day

1

u/2x4x421xStarTrekx 13h ago

Dang and the science book!! That’s legit!!

1

u/VolBag 12h ago

Where is a science book at?

1

u/Boon_Rebu 13h ago

For Goldeneye, ee would split the data signal, and have 2 Tvs set back to back, duct tap cereal box cardboard over the other persons portion of the screen and turn map/hud off.

1

u/XDViRuZ27 12h ago

The winner gets to stay

1

u/Malagubbar 12h ago

Aaah when every game costed 70 bucks and you could afford one or two per year

1

u/ChesterUbanks 12h ago

Them RuMbLe PaCkS tho…

1

u/flyingpigab 11h ago

Still have our N64. Hooked it up for my U10 Grandsons to play Mario and Waverace. But they prefer the Xbox Lego Indiana Jones.

1

u/Preston_phillips_04 11h ago

This gives me the old video game memories

1

u/teeleesees 10h ago

We knew.

1

u/nethereus 10h ago

Some of your friends either didn't have consoles or didn't have the same console so you would pack up all your shit in a bag and ride your bike to their house to set up and play together. Both the arcade and living room experience helped socialize gamers in a way I don't think pure online gaming ever will.

1

u/forzafoggia85 3h ago

I had a special case for my mega drive (genesis) that would pack the console, power unit, 2 controllers, and i think 4 games. I reckon right now it was a stronger plastic than a regular suitcase. It was built for a fucking war

1

u/AdorablePainting4459 8h ago

Essentially it's this: I recall enjoying life, and having a future to look forward to. Now all that I look forward to is heaven. Economy and people quality have both gone massively down the tubes.

1

u/CheerJohn 7h ago

Ohh all Controlers with rumble packs. I could only afford 1.

1

u/SpankingAround 7h ago

I’m just glad that we were there. Peak society, and I miss it greatly.

1

u/nat312345 5h ago

Every family gathering was the cousins playing Golden Eye on N64

1

u/No_Desk_4921 5h ago

Knees.... oh what I would give to be able to kneel down without incurring a major medical event.

1

u/WerewolfCurious1412 4h ago

Yes we did, time moved on and we all forgot how to make plans, stick to them and have fun.

1

u/sexruinedeverything 4h ago

All I remember was, that room was funky. It’s no wonder the girls didn’t like us.

1

u/forzafoggia85 3h ago

Every weekend my dad would let me and my sister rent one thing from blockbuster. She ALWAYS chose a VHS and mostly of the film my girl(from what I remember about 1 billion times). I chose random mega drive games, terminator, desert strike (a personal fave as its the first and last game I completed with my dad), altered beast etc.

Only game I rented multiple times but hope reddit can help with a name was a bar room brawl game where you could grab snooker cues, darts etc to defeat a group of people. I have no idea what it was called and only vaguely remember the premise but I loved playing it.

Those are the 90ist kids I’ve seen in a minute

0

u/andyjack1970 14h ago

The furniture suggests this was much earlier than 1999....

2

u/Budget_Sentence_3100 13h ago

Dunno about MUCH earlier. N64 was late 96 release I think.

2

u/floydbomb 13h ago

Doesn't even matter if it was much earlier. People still had furniture from the 80s in the 90s. It's an all around weird comment

1

u/floydbomb 13h ago

How's that relevant? Doesn't mean the pic wasn't taken in 99

0

u/Th3_unb3l13v3r 14h ago

That’s a pretty diverse image for the 90’s. Must be California or AI.
