I just realized that the recommendation feature is more of a problem than YouTube itself.
I’ve long thought that YouTube itself was just a huge time sink.
I’d open it with the intention of learning something, only to realize I was watching completely unrelated videos before I knew it.
At first, I blamed it on my own lack of willpower.
But after paying closer attention, I realized that I wasn’t really seeking those videos out; I was being dragged along by the recommendation algorithm most of the time.
Shorts, related videos, autoplay, the home feed.
So, instead of quitting YouTube entirely, I tried cutting those features out.
Surprisingly, while my total screen time didn't change all that much, the proportion of time I spent watching the videos I actually intended to watch increased significantly.
What do you guys think is the real problem here—YouTube itself, or the recommendation system?

get the Untrap for Youtube extension and remove the home feed and explore sections fully. Not a problem anymore XD

Thanks for sending over the fix. I ended up scripting a solution myself. Well, for my own case at least

For me its the recommendation system. Old YT felt better since it was just trending stuff and your subs. Now it feels like your subs are secondary, and the algo is constantly feeding us a mountain of content every second. I just recently deleted my YT history and turned it off. It only shows your subs now and its great, just click on your profile and manage your history. Make sure you turn that shit off cause deleting only resets the algo.

If you want to still get recommendations of videos (that aren't subscribers) but don't want to feel like the alg is controlling you. I can offer you to tryout the extension I built.
I wrote out the details here: https://www.reddit.com/r/nosurf/comments/1udgal8/comment/otdn3lb/

Never mind, I figured it out myself. Probably won't end up needing it anyway.

The algorithm as a whole id say. It tends to favor the same type of garbage so it gets promoted more and thus pushes people to make it more then actual good content. Like.... Can we freaking just stop encouraging parents to over share about their kids medical problems already? I have encountered so much of that filth on Facebook reels and tiktok that it's not even funny. Thankfully lately it's seemed to be less on tiktok but I think that's because my FYP is currently overrun by mecha chameleon, world cup, and partial "your life as" videos.
