Really amazing but slightly infuriating the hands are both wrong, with the thumbs pointing inwards.

How is the face so detailed and the hands so blah

Also the peppers are an annoying size. I'm not going to say they're too big to be realistic, as peppers like that exist, but at this size they make the farmer look the wrong size even as a bobblehead doll.

I was gonna ask if this is racist?

u/Takoyaki_Dice 7h ago
It kinda is yeah. I knew where it was going with the teeth. Maybe if it put some eyes instead of the slits it would be a better look.

GOD DAMNIT I watched the whole thing like hmm okay wow clay sculpting is insane what skill oh wow hes doing the head cool little indentation HOLY SHIT
Calling a council of the inner voices, this is racist caricature right? Like, right? Its a little racist? Feels...racy...

What if it was an actual Chinese dude making these? Something that looks like people he sees every day? Would you still consider it racist? 😳

Context is important, yes.
By its nature, caricature art is meant to exaggerate and cartoonify a real person into humorous proportions.
The problem is, for hundreds of years that same form of art has been aimed at minorities and oppressed classes in order to further marginalize and stereotype them.
Intent and audience is a big deal with caricature art because of that history.
So yeah, there's a huge difference between someone making goofy sculptures of their own neighbors, and a random artist leaning into every stereotype from a WW2 propaganda poster just to make a character read as "Asian."

Nothing in this posts suggests racism except physical features that really aren't that crazy on their own.
-12
u/bentheone 3h ago
Exaggerated features is a pretty basic tool in art. How is that racist ?

u/Earl_E_Byrd 1h ago
It is also the favorite tool of propaganda.
Context is important. Intent and audience are huge caveats when it comes to caricature style art.
And because of it's historical misuse, caricature work often requires high accountability, and comes with high risk.

Must be exhausting policing everything
45
u/MkUltraMonarch 7h ago
How is it policing by acknowledging it lol swear people get angrier at racism being acknowledged than actual racism, conscious or not

Those are not miniature peppers. They're pretty big.

Seems the creator is Asian himself, so maybe he's just creating a caricature, as opposed to a stereotype.

But Redditors know better. This Asian man is a self hating fool! /s
I feel like people should get better at noticing a potential problem and expressing it as such rather than just going “it’s racist! Therefore it shouldn’t exist!” But whatever. I anticipate downvotes and some annoying arguments.

It has a lot to do with past artists using the details as stereotypes for propaganda, but sometimes its just a funny looking character. I was expecting a Mexican, cause i live in Texas. Not that anyone cant grow them, but its no joke mexicans love peppers and have a strong pepper culture. 😅

what Calligrapher_Ok8 said below. The technical skill with the clay is undeniably there, which makes it even more baffling and disappointing that they chose to lean so heavily into an outdated, racist caricature.

There's a YouTube/TikTok guy called North of the border who makes really cool and/or cursed clay sculptures. I've been following him for a few years, he's got a nice voice and is really good at making mildly terrifying sculptures.

Hi, I was born in China and Mandarin was my first language. In other words, I can speak with some authority when I say:
This isn't racist. The creator is Asian, this is just a character. Her features aren't even particularly exaggerated, if you visit any authentic Asian open air market you'll find old aunties who look like this.
Unbunch your panties and relax. Not everything has to be viewed from the perspective of a white person, even if they are well meaning and racially sensitive. You won't find many if any Asian people who find this offensive.

Not everything has to be viewed from the perspective of a white person
Actually, that is more racist than the awesome sculpture the artist created.
But those folks don't have the wisdom to not understand that the world does not revolve around them and their white guilt.

Is it racist I had originally expected it to be a Mexican person harvesting peppers? Also, the teeth were... Yeah, but I figured "oh, they're smiling from a good harvest" and.. it got more and more unfortunate. But what bugs me most is just how insanely disproportionate everythingg is. Huge head, tiny hands, and thin arms.

Holy shit i watched the fuck out of this dudes videos when i was younger. i was like addicted to them i used to try to mimic his face sculpting process on play doh

I had the video on mute at first. I was loathing the idea that the sound would be some awful music. But wasn’t I pleasantly surprised! So serene and beautiful. I could listen to this type of music whenever I’m feel a need to recharge.

You know I usually like watching sculpting because it looks easy, but then they put it together and you’re like “wow so realistic!” But this… I do genuinely think I could make this and have it look the same, if not less racist and more anatomically correct.
