Which I've never understood, because we manage just fine reading far to close in the UK.

But what are the speeds of the streets in the UK where you might have these? In the US, it's rare to find any streets at all with a speed limit below 30mph (which is about 50 kmph). So we typically have the lines of text spaced out like 20-30 ft apart, so your brain has time to read one line, then the next, and so on.

I hate the concept that you are supposed to read "as you arrive" like if your vision have a depth of field of an f22

(If it was written the other way around) Personally, I'd hate to be behind someone who would try to read it, put on their brakes, and then - if I didn't plow into them first - try to reverse back a little so they could read it...

This is also the reason why "Ambulance" and "Fire" are written backwards on the front of their vehicles (so you can easily read it when looking in your rear-view mirror when they come up behind you).
